INVENTOR Patented Jan. 23, 1923.
UNITED STATES BENJAMIN J. rAsKAcH, or OMAHA, nEBaAsKA. I 1
SHUTTLE.
Application filed September 27, 1920. Serial No. 412,938.
"1'0 all 20 7mm it may concern lie it known that I, BENJAMIN J. PAS- niAcH, a citlzen of the United States, re-
siding at Omaha, in the county of Douglasand State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shuttles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same This invention relates to new and useful improven'xents in shuttles used when tatting and the like and has for its primaryobject the provision of means whereby thread-may be easily and quickly wound on the thread. holder and which will prevent the thread from accidentally unwinding or pulling directly off of the thread holder.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a shuttle of the above stated characterwhich will be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shuttle constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is a top plan view illustrating the same,
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view illustrating the means for preventing the thread holder from rotating in a reverse direction.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates as an entirety a shuttle consisting of the bowed side members 2 which are tapered towards their ends and. terminate in comparatively sharp points at their ends as illustrated at 3. The side members 2 are arranged opposite each other and are connected intermediate their ends by a pin 4 and said side members converge in the direction of each of their ends from a point adjacent the connecting pin 4, so that the ends of the side members lie in close relation is journaled on the pin land has secured to one end agear Gwhich lies in close proximity to the inner'faceof one of the side members 2 and meshes with an intermediate gear 7 journaled on a stub shaft 8 carried by the last named side member. A drive gear 9 is provided with a hub portion 10 which is journaled in the last named side member and said drive gear meshes with the to eachother. A spool orthread holder 5 idle gear 8. The hub 10 is internally screw threaded and has threaded therein the end a of a crank handle 11 providing a construction whereby the spool or thread holder 5 may be conveniently rotated for the purpose of winding threadthereon.
A cover 12 issecured tothe inner face of i the last named side member 2 and overlies the gears 6, 8, and 9 to prevent the thread when being wound on the spool fromcoming in contact with said gears and also during the removal of the thread from the spool or thread holder'when using the device for tatting or like purposes.
A ratchet gear 13 is secured to the last named side member 2 adjacent the gear 6 and is engaged by a spring pressed dog 14 i to prevent the spool or thread holder from being turned in a reverse direction. After the thread has been wound on the spool or thread holder, the crank handle may be removed by turning the same in a reverse directionwhich will unthread the same from the hub of the drive gear. -With the thread wound on the spool or thread holder the device is then ready for use, and the thread;
is then removed in the usual .manner by passing the thread between the ends of the side members 2.
One of the side members 2-has one of its ends extended and bent at right angles to form a pick 15 used for pulling thread while tatting and thereby obviates the usual practice of using a pin or the like for such purpose. I
While'I have shown and descrlbed the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as.
claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is I I w vA shuttle having first and second side members, a spool intermediate said slde members a coverabetweenisaid side members disposed against one end of said spoolto form a support therefor, a pin extending from said spool into and journaled in said cover, said cover having an elongated the second mentioned side member and bestraight portion and deflected end, the second mentioned side member having an elongated substantially straight portion v'oppo;
site and parallel to said portion and engaged by s'aid deflected "end, \a gear Wheel intermecliate said: cover and second mentioned side' meniber fi-XGCl OH-SHiCl pin, a. pawl on the second mentioned substantially straight portion inengagement-With said gear Wheel,
means intermediate the-o0ver and second mentioned substantially straight "portion operableto drive said gear wheel including a driving gear wheel, said driving gear Wheel having a hub journaled in the opening in ing overlapped by the cover to prevent displacement. of saidhub from the opening.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of towitnesses.
