- My invention relates to an improvement in governors for steam-engines, wherein I use a rotary valve or valves fitted into a cylindrical valve-seat, said seat being inclosed within a chamber.
- the rotary valve has arms H H, to which the packing-plates E E are attached, as hereinafter described.
- Figure 1 is a vertical section of the outer casing, inclosing the chamber B also showing a cross-section of the valve and valve-seat.
- Fig. 2 is a section of the valve, showing the manner of attaching the packing-plates.
- A is the outer casing, inclosing the chamber B and cylindrical valve seat O.
- the packingplates E E cover the ports G G, and H H are the arms of the valve, to which the packingplates are attached by means of the notches I I passing through the plate, as shown in Fig. 2.
- F is a recess in the arm, into which the packing-plate is placed.
- the arm and plate may be made solid or in one piece, and thus form a balance-valve; or it may be constructed as shown, and serve the purpose of a butterfly-valve.

Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Joan E. nucoo, or RICHMOND, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GOVERNORS.
Spedfiration forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,205, dated November 4, 1873; application filed October 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. HUGOU, of Richmond, Wayne county, Indiana, have invented certain Improvements in Governors for .Steam-Engines, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to an improvement in governors for steam-engines, wherein I use a rotary valve or valves fitted into a cylindrical valve-seat, said seat being inclosed within a chamber. The rotary valve has arms H H, to which the packing-plates E E are attached, as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of the outer casing, inclosing the chamber B also showing a cross-section of the valve and valve-seat. Fig. 2 is a section of the valve, showing the manner of attaching the packing-plates.
A is the outer casing, inclosing the chamber B and cylindrical valve seat O. I The packingplates E E cover the ports G G, and H H are the arms of the valve, to which the packingplates are attached by means of the notches I I passing through the plate, as shown in Fig. 2. F is a recess in the arm, into which the packing-plate is placed. The arm and plate may be made solid or in one piece, and thus form a balance-valve; or it may be constructed as shown, and serve the purpose of a butterfly-valve. The steam presses the packing-plate tightly against the valve-seat O. G G are the ports.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the cylindrical valveseat 0, placed in the chamber B, the valve K, having the arms H, and packing-platesE, with the ports G, all arranged and opcratln g substantially as described.
JOE E. HUGOU.
