DRESS FORM.
.application tied July 7, 1920. Seria' No. 394,418.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, los ll/l. Hansis, a citi- Zen ot the United States, residing at liasliington, in 4the District of Coluni'ioia,l have 5 invented certain new and usetul `improvements in Dress Forms; and l do hereby de- Clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description oi' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which lo it appertains to make and use the saine.
` 'llhis invention relates to dressinalrers dress lorms and the primary objecto'li the invention is to provide an improved dresiorm having the natural lines and configurai tions of the human body, so that garments can be readily tried on the saine and draped to obtain the most desirable effect.
Another object ot the invention is to pro vide an improved dressmalrens 'toi-in in 2o which the different portions oit' the body may be held in various positions so as to facilitate the fitting;- of the sleeves, and the like.
Another object ot the invention is to provide an improved dressmakingi` torni in which the fabric forming` the garment may be readily pinned to the form and thus held in position during,- the fitting ot the garment to the form.
A further object ot the invention is to provide an improved dressmalrers dress liorin termed of compi'essible material, so that corsets et various shapes and styles may be litted and adjusted on the torni, without distorting the form in any way whatsoever, so as to permit the form to take litter-ent configurations to conform to various and changing styles ol' figures assumed by women.
A. still l'urther object of the invention is 40 to provide an improved dress liorin of the `above character, which is durable and eilt cient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one that can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
4:5 lllith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation ot parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawtl) ings, forming a part thereof, in which:
1Figure l is a Jfront elevation ot the iinproved dress torm.
Figure 2 is a central vertical section through the same.
A Referring to the drawings in detail,
wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral l generally indicates the improved dress torni, which includes a skeleton iframe 2 termed of hollow tubing, and flexible wire oi" suitable gauge or Yother` similar material.
the skeleton trame 2 includes the spaced barsil and s; which torni braces Yfor the leo portions 5 ot the ligure, the central horizon tal connesting` bar 6, which 'terms the hip bar .for the .ligure and the centrally disposed vertical bar which is adapted to torni the trunk parL 'tor the body. Llrlie bar 'l' is connected its lower ends to the central. portion of the horizontal bar G and extends upwardly to the bach 8 of` the ligure. The central body supporti.ug` bar has secured adpieent its upper end the outwardly extend mii` bars and l0 which torni the shoulder portion l1 and arms l2 ot the body. yllie 3, 4f, 9 and l() are preterably'tormed in a plurality ot sections and the sections are connected by flexible and bendable metallic tubingjs 13 which are coiled spirally and 'formed similar to or the same as the support used in ordinary desk lamps. clearly shown in the drawings the flexible. bendable hollow tubings 13 are arranged ad-i Jacent to the pper end of the legs of the body, the waist and chest portion of the body, and the shoulder and elbow portions. This permits the body and arms to be placed in natural positions and held in such positions.
V[len outer sltin or covering 141- is provided for the form and the same is preferably made of knitted fabric similar to the fabric used in making knitted union underwear tor womens use and the body is stutled with a suitable compressible material l5, such as kapok silk, shredded wool rags and 'factory discard of wool. The terminals ot the arms, legs and neck ot the body are provided with metal caps 16 to which the fabric la: is secured and the caps are further held in place by suitable collars 17.
rthe bars 3 and l forming the leg support extend below t-lie stuffed portion ot the body and secured to a circular door engaging base i8 which is ot' sullicient diameter/to support the form in an upright position against aocidental displacement.
its stated the torni is to be constructed to contorni generally to the lines ot the hum body preferably alone,` the lines oit a youngv lady and when a dress or garment is to be made for a matured Woman, bust pads 19 are detachably secured to the body of the form.
From the foregoing description, it can be seen that an improved dressmalrers dress form is provided Which is of exceedingly simple and durable construction and which Will permit the easy and ready fitting of garments thereon.
In practice, I have found that the form oi my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment7 is the most etlicient and practical; yet realizing the conditions concurrent with the adoption of' my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the various minor 'changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, When required Without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention as set forth.
vWhat is claimed as new is:
l. A form of the elass described consist` ing ofv a flexible covering and padding therein to simulate the shape ot a portion of a figure7 and a frame member disposed Within the padding` and iiexible throughout an elongated portion thereof to permit bending of the form along lines ot gradual curvature.
2. A forni of the class described consisting of a flexible covering and padding therein to simulate the shape ot a portion olf the ligure, and a i'rame member disposed within the padding having an elongated spiral coil portion to permit bending ol. the form along lines or' gradual curvature.
3. A 'form of the class described consisting oit a flexible covering and padding therein to simulate, the shape of a portion o'i the igure and a frame member disposed within the padding having elongated spiral coil portions to permit bending ot the form at points substantiall)7 the same as the points oi bending of the human ligure.
In testimony wher-cot I alli); my signature in presence of two witnesses. Y
