HAIR FASTENER- FILED MAY-1,192,].

(the object or my improvements is to pro vide a fastener which will more effectually serve to secure the strands of a womans hair i into a self sustaining mass.
Another object is to provide ahair tastener which may be readily applied to or withdrawn from the hair and. maintain the strands or portions thereof in exact predetermined positions. a
Another object is to provide a hair fa tener havingits leg or prong; element formed to engage the hair and in turn, be engaged thereby in a manner to prevent the fastener being accidentally displaced or lost.
Uther objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following de scription.
'lhe invention consists essentially, in a hair fastener having leg or prone; members which are bent or :lorrned in a novel manner to ail'ord coniplemcntary projecting and recessed portions as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure l is a front elevation of a hair pin embodying: the present invention; and Fig. 2 is asimilar view illustrating my invention applied to a womans back-comb.
Referring; to the drawings. the hair pin shown in Fig. l comprises two leg members 5 and 6 connected by the usual loop 7.
intermediate its length and between straight portions 8 and 9 oil the leg; 5 the latter formed with two inwardly directed bends l0 and 'lO'Pand an outwardly directed bend 11 said bends constituting a shape substantially similar to the letter W.
llhe other leg 6 is formed between straight portions 12 and 13 thereof with an inwardly directed bend 14L which is arranged to or serial No. 466,645.
tend into the inner recess 15 obtaining between the bends 10 and 10 oil. the leg 5.
The axis ol said bends are substantially perpendicular to the straight portions of the respective legs and the axis of the bend 1.4; is located medially oi? the bends l0 and 10 The above described arrangement of the bends provides an indentation or bay 16 in the outer side oi the log 6 and between two bays 1? and 1.7 in the outer side of the leg 5.
The operation oi? a hair pin embodying the above described :teatures may be eX- plained as follows: a
1n dressing; a womans hair she engages a strand in the loop 7 or the pin and pushes the latter into the relatively compact inner portion oil? her hair. l i hen the pin is i'ully inserted, the bend portions of the respective legs engage in such compact body of hair, and portions of the compact which were directed by the prong po times 9 and 13 of the pin enter into the bays 16 and 1.7, 17 and exercise pressure against the respective bends as indicated by arrows A. and B to produce interlocking: engagement between the hair and the pin which will prevent the pin being removed except by a direct pull. to displace the wane otli hair so to speak, which are lodged within said bays.
It is to be noted that the pressures due to the resilience oil the bodies oil? compressed hair occupying the bays 1.7, 17 act against the pin in a general. direction, see arrows B, to that oi? the intermediate pressure denoted by arrow A acting in the opposite direction in the bay lb; and 'l urthern'mre by arrangiu the bay Ill midway beti vc n. the bays 17, 17 the side pressures a e mood to obvi-- ate any tilting or lateral disairarurement ol' the pin.
in Fig, l f illustrate the invention eurbodied in a eoiuln conventionally lmown as a back or sf v comb. in such an application the outer pair o'lt' or teeth 5 6 depending; from the comb stock 18 at each side of the central teeth 19 similar to the legs of the hair pin above described and the various characteristic elements or features of the teeth 5 6 are denoted by reference nunr hers employed to designate corresponding 2. portion 0! 5lIl)St;H1tl:lll Y V-shape which exuieatures of the hair pin. The tunetion 0t tends into the central recess of the W-rshnpml the teeth 5 and 6 of the comb hemp snnilar portlon at the first named leg.
to the hair pin legs will, it is thought, be 1111- signed at Seattle, \VtlSlllIllil'lUll, this LHih 5 (lei-stood Without further explanation. clay of April 192i.
lVhat I claim, is;- TOM .W g A hair fastener having a leg formed at 1 approximately its micllength with aportion \Vitnesses: of substantially VV-shape and a second leg Pnnzmc BARNES 10 formed at approximately its niidlengt-h with hIAmAmcT G. SUPPLE.
