UNITED stares .MILTON M. ADLEB, OFN'EWARK, NEW JERSEY.
rvnorizcnmcan DEVICE.
Application filed October 27, 1922. Serial in. 597,409.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON M. ADLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State provements in pyrotechnical devices; and
the invention has reference, more particularly, to an improved detonating fire-work or fire-cracker. i
20 to provide a novel construction of detonat The invention has for its principalobject ing fire-work r fire-cracker which is f safe to handle, which will not fly apart when set off so as to endanger the eyes or person of theuser, or entail the risk of igniting fires,
- and which is constructed toproduce, when set off, a series or intermittent succession of detonations, rendering the same of pleasing and interesting effect, and providing a fire-work or fire-cracker which will operate for a comparatively long time after it is ignited. v
Other obj ects .of this invention, not at this time-more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following de tailed description of the same.
- ;With the various objects of this invention in view, the same consists, primarily, in the novel detonating fire-work or fire-cracker hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the severalfdevices and parts, as well as in the; details of the. construction of the same, all of which willbe hereinafter more fully described in the. following specification, and'then finally a; embodied in the claims'appended hereto.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figurel is a perspective view of the complete fire-work or fire-cracker, made accordingito' and embodying the principles ofthe present invention; Figure 2 is a longitudinal centralqsection through the same; Figure 3 is'a'jcross section. through the same, taken online 3 -3 in said Figure 2; and :Figure of said fuse element 3.
isa plan View of a combustible carrier sheet upon which a plurality of; pastilles 7 o'r lozenges of pyroteclinical' composition are mounted, and which is adapted to be" enclosed in the outer case of the firework, said View also showing the, attachment to said rsn'r QFFWE,
carrier sheet of an ignition fuse. a
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the hereinabove described views, toindicate corresponding parts.
Referrlng now to said drawings", the refence character 1 indicates a combustible car such astissue paper, upon which are caused to adhere a plurality of pa'stilles or lozenges 2' consisting of a pyrotechnical composition adapted to produce detonations when ig nited. It will, of course, be understood that thereare many different pyrotechnicalcom: 5
positions known tothose skillcdfin the art which, whenignited, willproduce detona-s 'r'ier sheetfpreferably made of, thin paper,
tio'ns, andconsequently, inthis respect I do not desireto limit myself to, the use of any particular composition so characterized, al-
though l' prefer to employ a composition,
heretofore known and usedto produce intermittent detonations, and, which comprises amixture of gum-arabic, carbonate of magnesium, white phosphorus, red ocher and potassium chlorate. The" pastilles or lozenges 2 of pyrotechnical compo'sitionlare arranged in a group the members of which are suitably spaced apart. It is preferable to treat the paper or other carrier sheet 1 with some chemical adapted to insure continued comic bustion thereof once the same is ignited. A chemicalsuch as saltpetermay beemployed for such purpose, although I do not wish to be understood as confining myself to the use of that substance for the purpose indicated,
After thecarrierjsheet 1 with its pastilles or lozenges of pyrotechnical composition applied thereto is prepared, a fuse element 3,
of a suitable easily combustible material, is
attached to the carrier sheet. One end of said'fuse element is attached by a suitable adhesive to the carrier sheet, preferably (although not necessarily) to the center of the sheet where the group of pastilles or lozenges 2 of, pyrotechnical' composition is mounted. After said fuse element .3 is thus attached thereto, the carrier sheet is folded or crumpledinto a roughly ball-like body from the interior of which projects the free end The reference characters indicates cyjlindrical or tubular 'casin open at its re; spective ends, and"prefera ly rn'ade'of'comparatively heavy paper orlight cardboardg The ball-like body lIllQQ'flYhiCll";tl'l6. ;C ITiQIIf 6 sheet is formed (as above explained) is ing 4, so thatthe same is positioned in terniediate the open ends' of the latter, and
