Description

-E/ C. PATTERS N.
\ Cigar-Boxes. i
No. 144,129, Patented oct. 28,1873.
frn/ess es: l l lwe'lmv UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIAS O. PATTERSON, OF ROCESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN ClGAR-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,129, dated October 28, 1873; application filed October 23, 1873.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E. C. PATTERSON, of Rochester, county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved (ligar-Box; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and true description of the same, reference being had to the drawings accompanying this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide a cigar -box which shall serve to exhibit the cigars Without breaking the revenuestamp, and to provide a fastening device which, applied to the under section of the cover, and having pasted over it the revenue-stamp, prevents the opening of the box sufficiently to remove the cigars Without destroying the stamp. The nature of my invention consists in rabbeting out the inner sections of the cover, and in making one section of suflicient Width and so applying it as to exhibit the cigars, but at the same time to prevent their removal from the box Without destroying the stamp, combined With a fastening device which is applied to the under section of the cover, over which the revenue-stamp, extending longitudinally, is pasted.
Referring to the drawing, Figure 1 is a top view of the box. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
In my present invention, the sections B and C of the cover are rabbeted out at their inner edges b and c, Where they meet so as to overlapeach other, and form a smooth neat joint of uniform thickness. The under section C is rabbeted from itsupper `sidefar enough back to receive the revenue-stamp in the rabbeted portion c, and the upper section B is rabbeted from its under side sufficient for it to fit smoothly in the rabbeted portion on section O. Section C is made Wide enough to cover two-thirds, more or less, of the Width of the top of the box, and is hinged at its outer edge J, and is fastened down by means of the fastening device c', which is attached at the rab beted portion of section G, and to the side and bottom of the box. This fastening device consists of a strip of thin sheet metal, c, or equivalent, which is about half the Width of the stamp, and is tacked to the top of section O on the vrabbeted portion c, and to the side or bottom of the box, with tacks f. Over this fastener, extending longitudinally, is pasted the revenue-stampfH. Section B, which is also providednvith`` a hinge, K, is fastened down to section C by buttons I, or equivalent. It can thus be readily opened for the purpose of exhibiting the cigars D, which are placed crossWise in the box, in the usual manner.
By the described mode of applying the fastening device, With the stamp pasted over it, the latter cannot be cut or broken at the junction G of section O with the box, nor can section O or the bottom of the box be raised for the purpose of removing cigars without destroying the revenue-stamp.
NVhen it is desired to open section O, a knifeblade or similar instrument is passed under the strip of metal and the tacks f drawn from the side and bottoni of the box, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-1 The cigar-box A, having lids B and O, constructed as described, in combination With the bent metallic fastener e c, over which the revenue-stamp i's applied, and button I, or its equivalent, as and for the purpose set forth.
' E. C. PATTERSON.
