To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, .VILLLlM f). l mnson, a citizen of the United States, residing at l i aterburypin the county ot New Haven and State ot Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in h ieans for Controlling Associated Mechanisms oi Wire- Drawing Machinery or the like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to means for controlling associated mechanisms of wire drawing machinery or the like. referring more particularly to such mechanisms Forming part of wire rrawing machinery wherein there are wire drawing drums and a wire drawing or finishing block. I
It is the object of this invei'ition, among other things, to provide simple, economical and effective means for stop ing atone time all of the wire. drums and the finishing block of such wire drawing machines, starting the drawing drums and finishing block independently, and starting and stopping the finishing block independently of the drawing drums.
"re these, and other ends, my invention consists in the means for controlling associated mechanisms, having certain, details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

I have shown herein a wire drawing machine of a well known type, and in brief it power, but is desi 1921. Serial N0. 471,407.
consists essentially of a base 10, a table 11 supported thereabove by standards 12 or similar means, and within which is rotatably connected the drum shafts 13, each having a wire drawing drum 14 mounted thereon. These drums are rotated from a driving shaft 15, having pinions 16 thereon that mesh into the pinions 17. Substantially parallel with the drum shafts 13 is a block shaft 18 upon the upper end of which a wire drawing block 19 is suitably connected by a clutch mechanism, not shown, operated through a collar :50 slidably mounted upon said shaft. This clutch mechanism, is of a well known type and. does not herein require illustration or description. Any other form of make and break mechanism may be substituted if desired, such as a clutch on the main shaft instead of inside of the block. One form ot adaptable clutch mechanism is shown in Fatent No. 1,025,588 dated May 7, 1912.
The block shaft 18 is also rotated from the shatt 15through the bevel gears 21 and 22. The numeral 23 designates the main shaft or what may be properly termed the driving means which is journaled in the standards 24; and upon which is a pinion 25, the teeth of which mesh into those of a gear 26 having an axis substantially parallel to theshatt 15, and connected therewith through a clutch 27 of a well known type;
The main shaft or prime mover 23 may be rotated either from a motor, by a belt, train ot. gears, or any other suitable source of gned to be rotated continuously, while the drums 1 1 and block 19 are only designed to be operated. as desired.
Heretofore the two clutches, that is, the one associated with the shatt15 and the other with the block 19, have been operated without any common control. To stop the machine the operator manipulated the treadle. which controls the main driving clutch 27. This, of course, stopped the wire drawing drums and the wire block, inasmuch as the block also driven from the shaft 15. Provided the operator neglected to throw 0d the independent clutch-for the wire block the result wouldbe that upon again starting up the machine by the treadle controlling the main clutch 27, both the wire drawing drums and Wire block would start simultaneously under the full load, which would cause a heavy strain upon the main shaft or prime mover 23. If this latter, perchance, is driven by a motor, this strain would be very liable to blow out the fuses. Also the extreme tension on the wire by the starting of the wire block 19 would have a tendency to cause it to break, in which case the broken end of the wire is whirled around by the wire block, frequently causing inju y and damage both to the machine and to any per son who happens to be in the vicinity.
With my mechanisms such results are impossible, as I provide means whereby the main clutch 2i and the clutch operati the wire block i9 are both thrown out of engage-- ment at the'same time. This results in the stopping of all oi? the machine parts except the maiii shaft or prime mover 23. in the reverse operation, tlnu, is, to srt the mechanism, it is impossible to start the wire block 19 at the same time as the wire drawing drums let, the latter being started first, and then by a subsequent operation the latter being set in motion.
The mechanism for manipulating: the main clutch 2'? as hereh shown comprises a plurality of rock levers 2w. pirotally mounted upon fixed parts by the pintles 30, lhese rock levers are provided with foot plates 32 and 33 upon opposite sides ot the pivot mounting and downwardly dependingarms 34. in the drawings two or the rock levers 28 are shown, but is obvious that more or less may be used as desired.
The mechanism for operating' the clutch for the wire drawing block is independently controlled by the rock lever pivotally connected to fixed part by the pintle 31 and having foot plates and 51 thereon, a downwardly projecting arm 52 and an upwardly projecting arm 42.
A rod 35 extending along the "front oi the machine is pivotally connected with the arms 34: and the one adjacent to the clutch 2'7 with the rock arm 36 by which sa clutch is operated through the link 37. At the outer end of the rod 35 an extension rod 44) is connected therewith throuo'h a turn lnicltle 41. lVit-h this turn buclne the'position of the extension rod 40 may be varied in re lation to the rod 35, thus p1ro-.*icl.i-11g means for adjusting relatively the position oi the slot 39 therein.
Attached to the rock lever .29 is a latch 53 pivoted at 54 to swing; freely, and a spring 55 exerts its pull so as to hold the IQWer end of the latch in the notch 57 of the plate 56 attached to or integral with the base plate 10. i
In the position shown by full lines in Figures' 1 and 3, the rock lever 29 cannot be actuated by the foot plate 50, becanseo'f the position of the latch 53 relative to the;

with the rock levers 28 and the a rm with the rock lever 29, but this is not essential for they may be made in two or more parts.
The collar 20 is moved along the block shaft 18 by the rock arm 42 and rock lever connected by a turn buckle ll which permits relative adjustment. A yoke arm l5 connected with the rock leverlil is slotted to receive the pins 1-? projecting radially from the collar 20 whereby movement oi the rock lever 43 imparts movement to the K A stop l8 against which abuts the stop screw if) in the rock lever l3 limits the movement of said rocl; lever and through it the clutch bf, which the wire drawinn'blocl; 19 is operated.
This particular form of lever connection is desirable for use with a coil clutch, the toggle motion locking the sliding collar 20 in place as the screw 49 abuts against the stop 1-8.
Assuming that the ma n shatt or prime mover 23 is continually rotating; and the wire drawing drums l-land block 15) are at rest, as illustrated in Figure l. the drums are put in motion by applying pressure to the foot plate 33 upon any one of the rock levers 28, and the rod 35 and link 37 impart movement to the rock arm 86 actuating the'clutch 2? so that a connection is made between the main shaft or prime mover 23 and the shaft 15, putting the latter in motion and the wire drawing (lFlllDS 14 connected therewit'l'i.
During the above movement of the rod 35 and extension rod 40, however, the clutch that operates the wire block 19 is not actuated, as the pin 38 lies idle within the slot 39.

In stoppingthe machine, pressure may be applied to the pressure toot oi any of the rock levers 28, and through the rod 35 the main clutch 27 releases its hold so as to dis engage the shaft 15 from the main shaft or prime mover 23. As the extension rod 40 moves with the rod 35, the rock lever 29 is also actuated and the block clutch disengaged, thus all of the mechanisms are brought to a full stop at one and the same time. I
The relative position of the rock lever 29 and adjacent parts, when the block 19 is in motion, is shown by broken lines in Figure 3.
The rock lever 29 may be moved upon its pivot mounting by pressure upon the foot plate 51 to disengage the block clutch at any time when themain clutch is engaged, dun ing which time the pin 38 slides within the slot 39. With the rock lever 29 in the position just outlined the latch 53 is held within the notch 57 by the spring The block clutch cannot therefore be again engaged for rotation of the block until thclatch 1s released, either by the pin 58, manually or by such other means as mayseem desirable.

In a wire drawing machine, the combination with a driving means; of a rotating shaft; a clutch mechanism therebetween, whereby movement of the driving means is transmitted to saidshaft; a drum actuated from said rotary shaft; a wire block; a clutch mechanism for actuating said wire block from said rotating shaft; a plurality of levers; a member for connecting said levers with each other; means for connecting said levers with the first'of said clutch mechanisms wherebymovement thereof will actuate said clutch mechanisms; ,a lever connected ,with the clutch mechanism associated with said wire block an extension device upon said member having a slidable connection with the last mentioned of said levers;
. and means for varying the relative position of said extension device and said member.
10. In a wire drawing machine, the combination with a driving means; of a rotating shaft; a clutch mechanism therebetween whereby movement of the driving means is transmit-ted to said shaft; a drun'i actuated from said rotary shaft; a wire block; a clutch ntechanism for actuating said wire block from said rotating shaft; a plurality of levers, one of said levers being connected with the clutch mechanism associated with said wire block; means for connecting said levers with the first-of said clutch mechanismswhereby movement thereof will actuate said clutch mechanism, the connection with the last of said levers being such, however, that said lever receives movement only during the travel of said connection means in one direction; and a slotted extension device upon said member having connection with the last mentioned of said levers by means of said slot.
