JOHN A. VELCHANSKY AND gTANLEY STEFANIAK, OF HAMTRAMCK, MICHIGAN.
PICK.
Specification of LettersPatent.
Patented May 11, 1920.
Application filed August 13, 1919. Serial No. 317,365.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN A. VELGI-IAN- SKY and STANLEY STEFANIAK, citizens of the United States, residing at Hamtrarnck, in the county of \Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picks, of which the fol lowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in picks or kindred implements, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character wherein novel and improved means are employed for maintaining a handle or helve and head in assembled relation.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved implement of this general character wherein the portion of the helve or handle immediately adjacent the head is materially reinforced so that the life of the implement is materially prolonged.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our 1mproved pick whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simple, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of our invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevat on and partly in section illustrating a pick constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken through the central portion of the device as illustrated in Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, H denotes the head of the implement herein illustrated of a type or style generally employed by miners. The central portion of the head is provided with an eye 1 and the forward face of the head is provided with a recess2 surrounding said eye -1 with the opposite ends of said recess terminating in the substantially parallel shoulders 3 extending transversely and entirely across the outer face of the head H.
The marginal portion of the recess 2 defining the eye 1 is substantially concave as indicated at l: for a purpose to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.
A. denotes the handle or helve of the implement which is insertible through the eye 1 through the outer or larger end thereof.
Snugly embracing the forward end portion of the handle or helve A is a metallic sleeve S, said handle or helve being insertible through said sleeve S from the outer end thereof. The sleeve S is disposed on such a taper as to have its forward end portion snugly fit within the eye 1 when the implement is assembled. The forward marginal portion of the sleeve S is defined by an outstanding lateral fiange 5 seated within the concave portion 4 so that the outer face of the flange 5 and the base of the recess 2 are substantially flush when the parts of the implement are in assembled relation. The sleeve S is also of a length to extend a material distance inwardly of the handle or helve A so that the portion of the handle or helve A immediately adjacent the head H is strengthened or reinforced so that the life of the implement will be prolonged.
P denotes a plate adapted to fit substantially snug within the recess 2 and the opposite end portions of said plate P are provided with openings 6 registering with the threaded openings 7 in the base of the re cess 2 above and below the eye 1. The holding screws 9 coact with the registering openings 6 and 7 whereby the plate P is maintained in operative position and outward movement of the handle or helve A relative to the head H is prevented. We also find it of advantage to provide the inner face of the plate P with the inwardly directed and longitudinally alined wedges 10 adapted to be engaged within the kerf 11 in the forward end portion of the handle or helve A with a resultant expansion of said forward end portion of the handle or helve A to further assure an effective engagement or connection between the head 11' and the handle or helve A.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a pick constructed in accordance with our invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that our invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the prin ciples and spirit thereof and for this reason we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our invention in p actice except as hereinafter claimed.
We claim:
An implement of the class described comprising, in combination, a head provided with an eye, a handle insertible through the eye, a sleei e surrounding the portion of the handle Within the eye and having a flange at its outer end overlying the forward face of the head, the marginal portion of the head defining the eye being substantially concave to receive the flange of the sleeve, a plate snugly fitting Within the recess and overlying the eye and the flange at the outer end of the sleeve, and a clamping member disposed through each end portion of the plate and in threaded engagement with the head, the central portion of the plate being provided with inwardly disposed and longitudinally spaced wedges extending within the eye of the head and Within the adjacent end portion of the handle to expand said end portion of the handle.
In testimony whereof we hereunto aflix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. VELCHANSKY. STANLEY STE'FANIAK.
