- My invention pertains to electric ignition lock switches, and relates more particularly to lock switches for use in connection with automobiles, to prevent unauthorized running of the engine or tampering with the same. It is the principal'object of my invention to improve upon ignition locks or look switches of this class. It is another object of my invention to provide a lock switch of the permutationtype, which will be of a simple and compact construction and easy to manufacture, and which will render it impossible to complete the necessary circuit for running the engine without previous knowledge of the combination.

LOCK-SWITCH.

To all 2.0 [mm it may concern Be it known that I, Baron PI-IANDERS SwYnRs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Pittsburgh, in the county'of illlegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have 1nvented a new and useful Improvement in Lock-Switches, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention pertains to electric ignition lock switches, and relates more particularly to lock switches for use in connection with automobiles, to prevent unauthorized running of the engine or tampering with the same. It is the principal'object of my invention to improve upon ignition locks or look switches of this class. It is another object of my invention to provide a lock switch of the permutationtype, which will be of a simple and compact construction and easy to manufacture, and which will render it impossible to complete the necessary circuit for running the engine without previous knowledge of the combination.
Other and further objects of my invention will appear from the following description and be illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I have described, by way of example, in the following specification, and shown in the accompanying drawings, one form of lock constructed in accordance with my invention. I wish it understood, however, that the invention may be embodied in other forms, and that changes may be made in the form which is described and shown, without exceeding the scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.

heferring now particularly to the drawing, the lock switch comprises two insulating disks 2 and S-lplaced one above the other, the disks being held in spaced relation by means of three metallic standards 4. The disks are surrounded by a casing 5, which is closed at the top by a glass 6. Mounted on top of the disk 3 is a dial 7. Rotatably mounted on the. disk 2 is a spindle 8 having a squared portion 9 upon which is mounted an insulating hub 10. The hub 10 has mounted on the top side thereof a contact arm 11, said arm being rotatable with respect to the hub within limits bounded by stop pins 12. which are rigid in the hub and extend through slot 13 in said arm 11.. and a corresponding slot in washer 13. .J\. contact arm 141 is mounted similarly on the bottom side of the hub 10 but is limited by but one stop pin 15.
The disk 2 carries on its upper face an outer contact strip 16, such strip being in the form of a circle having a short portion broken out therefrom. At the center of the broken out portion is a contact 17 provided with a concave face. A similar contact strip 18 of smaller diameter is mounted within the strip 16, and a contact 19 similar to the contact 17 is mounted at the broken part of the strip 18.
The under side of the disk 8 carries similar strips 20 and 21, and contacts 22 and 23 placed in the broken part of the re spective strips.
The contact strips have their upper'face corrugated and have their side faces extending outwardly forming a dove-tailed body portion.
The contacts 23 and 19 have integral posts 24: and 24* extending down through the disk 2. The contacts 17 and 22 are joined.
The outer strips are in circuit through connections 25 and grounded through one of the standards 4, and easing 5.
The inner strips are in circuitthrough connections 26, and the inner, strip 18 is connected to the magneto ground through post 27.
The spindle 8 extends upwardly through the glassc'over 6 over the dial 7 and has a knurled knob 28, having a hand or pointer 28.
In setting the combination of the lockswitch the knob 28 is first turned in one direction until the contact arm 14 is in engagement with the contacts 1'? and 1.9 and then reversed until the contact arm ll is in engagei'nent with the contacts 22 and 23; the circuit will then be complete from the battery through. post 2 L, through contact 23, contact arm ll, contact 22, contact 1'7, contact arm ll, contact 19 to the locks or other mechanism 30 to be operated.
The correct position of the contact arms 11 and it correspond to certain numerals of the combination on the dial 7. The position of the contacts ll and H is designated bv the hand or pointer \lhcn the contact arms are in any other position than in engagement with the contarts ll, 19, and 223, the battery circuit will he ln'oken and the ground magneto circuit will be closed sin' e the contact arm ll. will extend across the rings 20 and 21., and the contact arm 1.. will extend across the iii a '16 and 18, or either contact arm may remain in engagement with the contacts in the broken part of the rings while the other arm is across the rings according to the amount of movement of the knob 28.
It will be seen from the above that the lock switch of my invention is of an exceedingly simple constrmtion, and combines all the necessary parts in one device. The lock-switch takes up no more room in car thai'i a dash speedometer or clock; and
- the aonstruction such that it is impossible for anyone, either by listening or otherwise, to find out the combii'iation of the switch. The device does away with the nccrssitv of carrying keys; all that is necessary being to turn the combination.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. A lock switch. comprising two disks spaced one above the other, contact rings on said disks, a shaft mounted to rotate with respectto said disks, other contacts on said disk and insulated from said rings, contact arms rcvolubly mounted on said shaft, said arms having limited movement relative to said shaft, one of said arms having a greater restricted movement than the other, and means for moving said conta -t arms to desired positions.
2. A lock switch comprising a. casing, two disks spaced one above the other, contact rings, having broken out portions, on said disks, shaft mounted to rotate with respect to said disks, other contacts on said base within said broken out portions of said rings, a bushing on said shaft, contact arms revoluble with respect to said bushing and carried thereby, said arms having a restricted movement relative to said bushing, one of said arms having a greater restricted movement than the other, and means for rotating said shaft and said arms.

Jr lock switch comprising a casing, two insulating disks spaced one above the other, contact rings having serrated top faces mrumted in said disks, said rings having portions broken out therefrom, other contacts having concave top faces mounted in said disk, a shaft mounted to rotate with respect to said disks, a bushing of insulating material fixedly secured on said shaft, contact arm mounted on said bushing and revoluble with respect thereto, said arms having convex contacting ends adapted to engage in the serrations in said rings and in said concave faces of said contacts, said arms havi a restricted movement, relative to said nushing, one of said arms having a greater restricted movement than the other, a dial on the top of said casing, means for rotating said shaft and said contact arms, and means coiiperating with said dial for designating the location of said arms.
5. in a lock switch of the class described, a plurality of disks, each of said disks having inner and outer contact rings having portions broken out therefrom, said rings. having dove-tailed body-portions, and serrated top faces, substantially as described.
(3. In a lock switch of the class described, a plurality of disks of insulating material, each of said disks having inner and outer contact rings having serrated upper fares, said rings extending above the face of said disks and having portions broken out therefrom, portions of said disks extending above the plane of said disk on a line with said rings, said portions of said disk being serrated, and said rings being held in position by dove-tailed body portions, substantially as described.
