FLAME-PROTECTOR.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY Mourns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haddonfield, in the county of Camden, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Flame-Protector, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention comprehends a novel construction and arrangement of a flame protector, which is adapted to be used in combination with gas, oil or other types of fuel burning stoves or ranges, in order to prevent the flame being extinguishedin case the water or liquid contained in the pot or kettle which is being heated should overflow, the result ofwhich is to injure the wick in case an oil burner wick is employed, and to extinguish the gas in case the fuel is of a aseous nature with consequent liability and likelihood of injury to persons in the room or the building through the escaping gas.

With the above in view, my invention further comprehends a novel construction of a flame protector, comprising an integral sheet of material, preferably of metal, hav-v ing an aperturethrough which the flame can pass, and tapering downwardly and outwardly to a gutter formed by bending up the marginal rim of the device, sothat the water will collect in the gutter formed thereby, and if the gutter should overflow, the device is of such diameter that it will flow over out of the path of the source of neat.

It further comprehends a novel construction of flame'protector comprising a disk or other shaped member having an upturned marginal edge and an aperture, the wall of which is as high as, or higher than, said marginal edge and provided with the fluted portions or corrugations to form flues in order to introduce air in proximity to the zone of combustion, in order to assist such combustion.

Other novel features of construction and advantage will hereinafter more clearly appear in the detailed description of my invention.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawing, a typical embodiment thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same will give in practice-satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be undwstood that the various instrumentulities Specification of Letters Patent.

of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

Referring to the drawings 1 designates a flame protector embodying my invention, which consists preferably of 4 in order to form a gutter 5 in which the water which overflows from the gutter or container supported on the flame protector will be collected.

The edge 6 of the aperture 2 is preferably as high as or somewhat higher than the upper face of the flange t. In proximity to the aperture 2, the body portion 3 is upwardly deflected as at? to form fines or passages for the air to pass to the centralopening 2 in order to assist in the combustion, since the flame is passing through the aperture 2 and the air is drawn in toward the flame to the passages formed by the deflected portions 7. The upper face of these deflected portions 7 also serve as a support for the container, such as a sauce-pan or kettle which contains the articles which are being cooked.

The flange 4 is preferably provided with an integral extension or tongue 8, which eX-- tends laterally from said flange and is provided with an aperture 9 in order that the device may be hung up when not in use.

It will be apparent from the foregoing that in case the water in the kettle or container resting on the flanges 7 should boil over, the water instead of passing to the burner, will be collected in the gutter 5, and if suflicient water overflows to more than fill this gutter 5, the water will overflow the flange 4 but will drop from the flame. protector beyond the burner, so that the flame will not be extinguished, and in the case of oil, the wick will not be injured.

My device may be very economically manufactured, as it is simply a stamping operation, and it has been found in practice to give very advantageous results.

It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful flame protector, which embodies the features of advantage enumerated in the above description, andwhile I have in the present instance shown and described a typical embodiment thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

Having thus described my invention,

' what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A flame protector comprising a sheet of material and having an opening and a body portion inclining downwardly from said opening and terminating in an upwardly extending flange to form agutter, said body portion having portions thereof deflected above the edge of said. opening in order to form a support for the article to be heated and also to form air passages leading to said opening and to permit the flame to pass around a container supported on said deflected portions.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a flame protector comprising a metal disk having a centrally located opening and provided with upwardly deflected portions, the upper faces of which form a support for the article to be heated, and the lower faces of which form flues to direct air to said opening, the body portion of said disk being inclined downwardly and terminating in an upwardly extending flange,. which terminates below the horizontal plane of said opening.
