Be it known that I, A BERT A. HUTCHIN- son, a citizen-of the United States, of Americe, and a. resident of WVinchester, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hide-Working Machines, of which the following is a specification. p
This invention relates to hide working machines and has for its object the production of machines of this class particularly adapted for stretching; the hides and gener ally known as putting out machines.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims hereinafter given.
F or the purpose of illustrating the invention, one preferred form thereof is illustrated in the drawings, this form having been found to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalitiesof which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and that the; invention isnot limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as here in shown and described.

Similar characters designate like parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In the drawings, 10 and 11 represent two end frames of the machine connected together by the tie girts 12. Mounted in suitable bearings in the end frames 10 and 11 is the working cylinder 13 having the operating knives 14 thereon.
The trunnion 13 of the working cylinder 13 extends beyond the outer face of the end frame 10v and has secured thereto a driving pulley 15. by which the working cylinder 13 may be revolved at any desired speed.
Above the working cylinder 13 and revolubly mounted in boxes 16 is a feed roll 17. Each of the boxes 16. has secured thereto a threaded member 18 extending through a lug 19 formed upon a bracket 20 secured to an end frame 10 or 11. Between the lug 19 and an adjustable member 21 threaded to said member 18 is a spring 22 normally forcing the feed roll 17 toward the front of the machine. Nuts 23-24 threaded to. the outer end of the member 18 and cooperating with the lug l9 serve to limit the forward movement of said boxes 16;
To the upper end of each end frame 10-11 is secured a bracket 25 having a lug 26 through which extends a threaded member 27 the lower end of which is connected to the box 28 in which is revolubly mounted one end of the feed roll 29. The member 27 has threaded thereto the nut 30 between which and the lug 26 is interposed a spring 31 which forces the, feed roll 29 downwardly, the downward movement being limited by the nuts threaded to the member 27 above the, lug 26.
The roll 17 has a trunnion 34 extending beyond the end frame 10, and the roll 27 has a similar trunnion 35 to which is. secured a gear 36 adapted to mesh with a gear 37 which is also adapted to mesh with a ear 38 on the trunnion 34.
The teeth of the gears 36-37 and 38 are all pointed so that the driving gear 38 may be readily thrown into or from mesh with 'the gears 36-37 as is usual in machines of this class. The normal position of the gears 36-37 is as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the gears 36 being somewhat in front of and a little higher than the gears 37 so that when the gear 37 is moved to the rear it will mesh simultaneously with both gears 36-38.
The gear 37 is'on a trunnion 39 of the work supporting roll 10 which is provided at its opposite end with a trunnion 42. The trunnions 39-42 are mounted in bearings in the rocker frames 43 pivoted to the end frames 10-11 zit-44c.
The rocker frames 43 have forwardly ex tending arms 45'to each of which is pivoted at 46 a link 47 the opposite end of which is pivoted to the crank disks 48-110 by which rocking movement is imparted to the rocker frames 43. The link 47 is composed of two end members, each provided with an ear 48 to which is threaded the opposite ends of the connecting member 49by which the length of said link may be varied. The
crank disk 48 is surrounded by a brakemember composed of two sections 5051 pivoted together at 52.
The member 50 is provided with a lateral projection 52* the end of which is positioned in the socket 53 in an car 54 formed on the end frame 10. The member 50 is provided with an ear from which projects the threaded pin 56 extending through a slot in' an ear 57 on the member 51. The gear 60 meshes with the gear 61 which in turn meshes with the gear 62, the latter gear being provided with another gear 63 revoluble therewith and meshing with the pinion 64 revoluble with the driving pulley 65 mounted upon the stud 66 projecting from a bracket 117 secured to; the frame 11.
A belt 67 on the pulley 65 passes over the sheave 68 keyed to the trunnion 69 of the knife cylinder 13, said sheave 68 imparting rotary movement to the pulley 65. The trunnion13" of the knife cylinder 13 has keyed thereto the driving pulley 15 to which rotary movement is imparted by a belt 7 2 from a suitable counter shaft (not shown). To an ear 73 on each rocker member 43 is pivoted a link 74 the opposite end of which is pivotally connected to an arm/75 of a lever pivoted at 76, the other arm 77 of said lever having secured thereto a counter balance weight 78. v
The weight 78 may be movedendwise of said arm 77 and locked thereto in ad justed position by means of the set screw 79. Suspended from the trunnions 39 and 42 are the swinging frames 80, each having a slot therein in which is mounted a box 81, said'boxes 81.having revolubly mounted therein the roll 82 providedwith covering. of relatively thick yielding material 83 such as soft rubber.
Secured to the front face of each swinging member is a bracket 85 provided with an ear 86 through which extends a threaded rod 87 the opposite end of which is secured to the box 81.
The rod 87 hasa nut 88 mounted thereon between which and the car 86 is a helical spring 89 which tends to force the rubber covered bed roll .83 toward the working knife cylinder 13. The movement of the rod -87 toward the rear of the machine is limited by the nuts 90. The rods 87 each have thereon a pair of adjustable nuts 91.
Between one pair of nuts 91 is positioned the slotted end of the plate 92 the opposite end ofwhich has adjustably mounted thereon the plate 93 having an open ended slot 94 straddling the rod 87 between the other pair 'of nuts 91. The plate 93 is provided with an elongated slot 95 through which extend the clamping bolts 96 by loosening which the plate 93 may be moved endwise to remove the slotted end thereof from the rod 87 so that-said plate 92 may berebolts 99.
The swinging frame 80 is provided with V a curved arm 100having lateral extensions 101 and 102. To the extension 101 is secured one end of a curved plate 103 the opposite-end of which is provided with a flange-104 parallel to and abutting the extension 102. 1
The flange 104 is provided with an ear 105 extending over the arm 100-and to which is threaded the adjusting screw 106 whereby the lower end of the plate 103 may be adjustedrelatively to the arm 100 thereby varying the width of the curved cam slot 107 formed by said arm 100, extensions 101 and 102, and the cover plate 103.
In the cam slot 107 is positioned the roller 108 mounted upon the shaft 109 revolubly mounted in bearings in the frames 1011. One end of the shaft 109 has secured thereto the crank disk 48 while the opposite end has secured thereto a similar crank disk 110 having substantially diametrically disposed cam projections 111 and 112. V
Revoluble with the disk 110 is a gear 113 which is adapted to be revolved in the direction of the arrow at on Fig. 1 by means of the gear 114. This gear 114 is revolubly mounted in the upper end of the lever 115 pivoted at 116 to a bracket 117 secured to the end frame 11. This bracket '117 also is provided with the studs 118 supporting the gear 60, the stud 119 supporting the gear 61, the stud 120 supporting the gears 62 and 63,
and the stud 66 supporting the. pulley 65 and pinion 64. V j
On the stud 116 is a gear 121' meshing with the pinion 64 and a pinion 122 revolu ble with the said gear 121. The teeth of the pinion 122 mesh with theteeth of the gear 114 and drive the same. The lower end of the lever 115 has pivotally secured thereto at 123 a rod 124 the opposite end of which extends through a bearing 125 secured to the bracket 117.
The bearing 125 is cupped as shownin Fig. 1 and has positioned therein a ball 126 of yielding material. Surrounding the .rod 124 and bearing against the opposite side of the ball 126 is a cup-shaped washer 127 also surrounding the rear end of the rod 124; This rear end of the rod 124 is threaded and provided-with the adjustable nuts 128 which limit the forward movement of said rod. The forward end ofthe rod 124 is provided with a toe 129 with which the arm 130 is adapted to engage to force the rod 124 to the rear against the tension of the spring 125 surrounding said rod.
The spring 125 normally retains the lever 115 in the position in which it is sliown in Fig. 1 with the gear 114 out of mesh with the gear 113. When the rod 124 is moved to the rear by the arm'130 the lever 115 is moved about its pivot 116 and the teeth of the gear 114 are caused to mesh with the teeth of the gear 113, thereby imparting rotary movement to said gear 113 and disk The arm 130 extends upwardly from a member 131 adapted to oscillate about a stud 132 extending from the end frame 11, said member being provided with a rod 133 which has a collar 134 thereon provided with a bearing for the operating lever 135 extending outwardly through an opening 136 in the end frame 11. The inner end of the lever 135 is mounted on a stud 137 mounted in the lower end of the depending bracket 138secured at its upper end to the front'tie girt 12. The lever 135 is provided with the foot pad 139 by which said lever may be oscillated about said pivot 137 to actuate the lever 133130 and thereby move the lever 115 about its pivot so that the gears 114113 will mesh.
The lower end of the lever 115 is provided with an adjustable member 140 the forward end of which is adapted to be engaged by the stop member 141 pivoted at 142 and having secured to the forward end the spring 143 which tends to retain the cam member 144 on said stop member in contact with the periphery of the disk 110.
The upward movement of the rear end of the stop member 141 is limited by the ear 145 formed on the lower end of the lever 115. When the operator depresses the treadle 139 he retains his foot thereon until the cam 112 is removed from contact with the cam member 144 and the spring 143 has moved the stop member 141 into contact with the ear 145.
The gear 114 will then be retained in mesh with the gear 113 until the cam 111 engages the cam member 144 and disengages the stop member from themember 140,.thus permitting the spring 124 to act on the lever 115 and disengage the gear 114 from the gear 113. The bed roll 82 and work supporting roll 40 will then be held in their outer or downward non-operating position by the friction brake band 50.51 until the operator again depresses the treadle 139 The gears 113-4114 will then be brought into mesh and the stop member 141 will retain said gears in mesh until the cam proj ection 112 by contact with the cam member 144 again disengages the stop member 141 from the member 140 and permits the. dis engagement of the gears 113-114. V The bed roll 83 and work supporting roll 40 will then remain in their operative position until the operator again depresses the treadle 139. The brake band 50- -51 in frictional contact with the disk 48 prevents the rotation of the shaft 109 unless positively driven by the gears 113-114 and when the rocker members 43 are in the position indicated in the drawings they are retained in this position by the counterweights 78.
The cam slot 107 is so shaped that when the rocker frames 43 are moved about the pivots 44 the bed roll 83 will be moved horizontally toward and from the knife cylinder 13. When the bed roll 83 is moved into position adjacent the knife cylinder 13 the material will be forced by the knife blades 14 into the spongy yielding covering of the bed roll. and said roll will be revolved by the knife cylinder 13 and the hides will be effectively stretched outwardly. This result is due to providing the bed roll witha relatively thick covering of yielding material and also providing means for forcing the bed roll toward the knife cylinder sufficiently far and under sufficient pressure to insure the hides being forced into the peripheral surface of said bed roll.
The gear 59 is provided on its inner face with two projections 146 between which is positioned an arm 147 radiating from a collar 148 keyed to the trunnion 42. The gear 59. is loosely mounted on the trunnion 42 and there is sufiicient play between the projections 146 and the arm 147 to permit slight movement of the gear 59 about its axis when the teeth of the gear 60 are being brought into mesh with the teeth of said gear 59. By means of this construction the teeth of the two gears 5960 may be readily brought into mesh without danger of injuring the gears.
The frames 10 and 11 are each provided with an ear 149 in whichis threaded the adj ustable stop member 150 which in the inoperative position of the work supporting roll serves to limit the forward movement of the rocker frames by contacting with the trunnions 3942.
During the operation on the material the opening 89 forces the bed roll. 83 ;toward the knife cylinder 13 so that the'materialis embedded in the surface of the soft yielding cover of saidroll, and as the material is fed the roll 83 is rotated by the material in there is no portion interposed between the bed roll 83 and the knife'cylinder 13, the spring 89 will force the bed roll 83 farther to the rear into Contact with the knife cylinder l3, and as the bed roll is freely revoluble in its bearings it will be rotated by said knife cylinder. As a result the bed roll will not be injured by the knives of the working cylinder as would be the case if the bed roll was .at rest or rotating in the opposite direction.
This is an important feature of the present invention as results are attained thereby whichit has heretofore been impossible to obtain. I It is believed that the operation and many advantages of this invention will be fully understood from the foregoing description.
Having thus described iny invention, I claim: I
1. The combination with aworking cylinder of a pivoted rocker frame; a work supporting roll mounted therein; a frame adapted to swing about the axis of said work supporting roll; a rubber covered bed roll carried by said swinging frame; means for movingsaid rocker frame toward the working cylinder; feed rolls adapted to coact with the work supporting roll; a fixed projection; and an extension to said swinging frame having a cam slot in which saicbprojection is positioned. j
2. The combination of a frame adapted to swing about the axis of a work supporting roll; a rubber covered bed roll carried by said swinging frame; a fixed projection;
and an extension to said swinging frame havlng a camslot in which said. pro ectlon made in two parts one of which is adjustable relatively to the other. e
3. The combination of a frame adapted to swingabout the axis of a work supporting roll; a rubber covered bed roll carried by said swinging frame; a fixed projection; an extension to said swinging frame having a cam slot in which said projectionis positioned said slotted extension being made in two parts, one ofwhich is provided with an ear projecting over the other part; and a member bearing upon said other part and adjustably mounted in saidjear.
4. The combination with a working cylinder, of a pivoted rocker frame; a worksugporting roll mounted therein; a frame adapted to swing aboutQthe axis of said work supporting roll; a rubber covered bed roll carried by said swinging frame; means for moving said rocker frame toward the working 0 linder; feed rolls adapted to co-' act with tie work supporting roll; a fixed projection; and an extension to said swinging frame having a cam slot in which said projection is positioned, said cam'slot being eccentric to the axis of the work supporting roll. r
5. The combination with a working cylg inder, of a pivoted rocker frame; a work supporting roll mounted therein and provided with a trunnion extending fromone end thereof; a collar keyed thereto and provided with a radial arm; a gear loosely mounted on said trunnion and having lat eral projections on opposite sides of said arm; and a driving gear adapted tomesh '50 is positioned said slotted extension'being' with the gear on said trunnion when the work supporting roll is in operative position.
