JOSEEH` L. CRAWFORD, OF RAYMOND, WASHINGTON.
RAZOR.
Application filed August 14, 1918.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. CRAwronn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Raymond, in the county of Pacific and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to razors, and an object of the invention is to provide a razor in which the cutting blade is interchangeable, and constructed in such manner that when the outer or toe end ofthe blade becomes dulled, the position of the blade may bereversed, for using the end of the blade which was previously at the heel end with respect to the handle, at the toeor outer free end of the blade holder.
A further object of this invention is to provide a razor blade holder or handle structure whichl is provided with a longitudinally extending groove to receive therein the back or blunt end of the blade and to magnetize theback structureof the holder for retaining the blade therein and which will permit the positioning of the blade at various projected positions with respect to the holder or handle structure.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a razor structure as specified, means, including a set screw for engage ment with the blade and blade holder for use in connection with the magnetic attraction to hold the blade in position with respect to the holder and also to provide an abutment upon the holder provided with a recess in which the inner or heel end of the blade rests when the blade is properly positioned with respect to the holder or handle.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which drawing:
Figure l is a perspective view of the im proved razor.
Fig. 2 is a section on4 the line 2-2 of Fig.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view partly in sec tion of the razor blade and holder showing the set screw employed for preventing ac cidental movement of the blade.
F Fig. 4: is a section on the line 4.--4 of ii l.
ig. 5 is a side elevation of a modified form of blade.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 4, 1920.
Serial No. 249,838.
Fig. 6 is a section through the holder showing the modified form of blade conA nected thereto.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, A indicates the usual handle of the razor, which has pivotally connected thereto the blade holder l. The blade holder l is constructed of steel, and shaped similar' to the shape of the back of an ordinary razor blade, it being adapted to be folded between,
the spaced sides of the handle A when not in use.
The holder l, comprises the back portion 2 which is provided with a longitudinally extending recess extending upwardly from its lower edge. The recess 3, receives therein the blunt inner edge 4 of the razor blade 5 and the back 2 of the holder l is magnetized, to hold the blade 5 within the slot or recess 3 and prevent accidental' movement thereof. The magnetizing of the back 2 of the holder 1, will cause the'relatively thin lower edge portion of the back to cling -snugly to the side surfaces of the blade 5, forming a fluid tight sanitary joint between the back 2 and the blade, preventing moisture, soap suds or the like from passing between the blade and the inner surfaces of the sides of thel back of the holder. The blade 5 is shaped, so that when it is connected to the back 2 of the holder l, these members will form a blade structure similar in shape to the ordinary razor blade and the point or cutting corners of the blade 5 may be either square or rounded as desired. The holder l is provided with an outwardly extending abutment 6. The abutment 6 is provided with a recess 7 formed therein in which the inner end of the blade 5 engages, forming a secure connection between the inner or heel end of the blade 5 and the body of the blade carrier l and also forming a support for the inner heel end of the blade. Y
If it is so desired, the blade 5 may be provided with cuteout portions 8 in each end thereof at its upper corner and these cut-out portions are provided to permit the connection between the threaded portion or shank of the set screw 9 with the threaded portion of the inner surface of the back 2 of the holder l. The head l0 of the set screw is of suflicient size to engage the end of the blade 5 as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, and it will thereforeco-act with the magnetic contraction between the back 2 of the blade 5, in holding the blade securely in place with respect to the holder' 1 and preventing any accidental slipping movement of the blade, during use. The blade 5 is provided With the cut-out portions 8, one in each end, so that when the end of the blade which has been positioned at the outer end of the back 1 becomes dulled, the blade 5 may be re-r versed, positioning the end thereof Which has previously been at the heel end of the holder, at the toe or outer free end of the same Which permits prolonged use of the blade, as it is a Well-l nown fact that the outer or toe end of a razor blade becomes dulled much quicker than the heel end there-V of owing to the fact: that it is more eXtensively used.
In Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawing, a modified form oit the blade structure is shown.
In this modified form, the blade 5a is rela- 5, or it may be magnetized for holding it inA proper position With respect to the bladert)a when it is mounted thereon, and thereby per'- mitting it to be removed from the blade 5a when the same has become dulled orY otherwise rendered useless, for mounting upon a new blade 5CL and With this clip structure, supplied with the razor Y holder l, Veither blades of the construction illustrated in Figs. 2 or 6 may be employed in connection With the holder. Y Y
Changes in details may be made without departing from thesp'irit of this invention; but Y I claim:
In a razor, a blade holder provided with a longitudinally extending blade receiving recess terminating in a straight shoulder at its inner end, a blade oi? uniform Width throughout its length and having a relatively thick back portion removably seated in said recess,
said shoulder recessed to receive the inner end of the blade, said blade provided With cut-out portions at the upper corner of each end to permit the reversing of ythe position of the blade in the holder, a set screw threaded in the outer end of said holder and seating in said cut-out portion, the head of said set screw engaging the end off said blade to prevent accidental Amovement of the blade with respect to the holder.
