Be it known that MAGDALENA' DE nos vS.
. ENRIQUEZ, a citizen of Mexico, anda resident of New York city, in the county and State o New York, have vinvented ycertain new and useful Improvements in Ladies Garters, Vof which the following is a full, clear, and lexact description.
Among the principal objects which the .present invention has in view are: `To'avold .the damage to ladies stockings incident to supporting the same in service; to increase. thecomfort of stockings in service; to pre- .vent sag or wrinkling of the stockingbelow the knee of the wearer.; and to provide an -ornamental article of the character mentioned.
Drawings.
VFigure 1 is a view showing the outer portion' ofthe human leg, the upper end of a l stocking installed in service thereon, anda `garter for holding the stocking in place, said garter being constructed and arranged in accordance with the present mventlon.
Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the inside of the garter in its extendedy or opened position.
Description.
The present invention is particularly designed to overcome the objection to stocking supporters where straps are attached to the corsets and to the stockings for holding they stockings in service position, and where the full strain ofthe pull ofthe strap is imparted to the top of the stocking, to the effect that often the stocking is pulled apart or torn by the fastener securing the same to the strap.
v Furthermore, in service, strap -supported stockings are apt to wrinkle below the knee, incident to the fact that when assumed in the sitting position, the wearer of the stocking stretches the upper portion of the stocking above the knee without the strain thereon being distributed tothe portionl of the stocking belowthe knee. When the person wearing the stocking assumes an upright position, the stretch thus imparted to the stocking results ina fullness in the stocking below the knee, with the consequent wrinkling thereof.
lt i desired to hold Vthe stocking 4snugly on the leg below the knee. With this object in view, the present invention provides the lower partly elastic strap. The partly elasspwmuon af ma raient. 'Patented May 4, 1920,
Application led-June 20, 1919. Serial No.' 305,659.
tic strap is constructed of elastic sections 7 and 8, and sections of the non-.elastic supports 9 and 10, The combined. sections 7 and 8 and supports 9 and 10` provide that the sections 7 and 8 may .be stretched whenthe garter is placed in service on the leg..
When in service, the ends of the garter areunited, using for this purpose, a buckle having male and female members 11 and 12.
The members 11 and 12 are of'usual con-` 11 extends and rests.
The supports 9 and 10 are shaped and elongated to extend from below to above the knee ofthe person wearing the garter. The A supports 9 andl 10 are rovided, adjacent their extremities, with oops 13, through which is run elastic webbinr 14. The web- -bing 14 has fasteners 11 an '12, as are provided on the section 8 and the suppglrter 10,
where the same extend, below the ee.
The garter formed by the webbing 14 is arranged to fit the upper portion of the leg of the wearer of the stocking, approximately where the top of the stocking usually rests. The purposel'of the webbing 14 is to retain the stocking andto prevent the same from falling. i
When'placing the garter in service, the sections 7 8, and the portions of the supporters 9 and 10 in line therewith, are disposed below the knee-cap and above the calf of the leg. The portion of the garter formed by the web 14 is fastened about the u per portion of the legyabove the knee-cap.
en the two garter portions are secured, it is obvious that when the le is bent at the knee, the front portion of t e stocking is sli htly stretched, the garter formed by the we bing 14 permitting this action. T e slack thus imparted to the stocking in t e region between the two garter sections is not permitted to encroach upon the area of the stocking below the lower garter section, hence, the visible part of the stocking has alwa s a neat and snug appearance, while 1free om is imparted to the movement of the Adjacent the4 extremities of the supporters 9 and 10, said supporters are provided with e elets 15 and 16. Theseeyelets are preferab y metal eyelets of the. general type worn in shoes, for lacing. The openceive the button-like head 17 provided on one of the members of the usual fasteners secured to elastic stocking supporters 18. An eyelet plate `19 is usuall provided on the stocking supporter'which as an eyelet 20, the enlarged portion of which permits the passage of the head 17, while the contracted ortion of which, engages the shank of the iiead 17, and prevents the passage of the said head therethrough.
It will be understood that unlike the present method of securing the stocking, where sections of the fabric thereof, are forced through the eyelet 20 by the head 17, in the present case, the head 17 is not directly engaUed with the fabric of the stocking.
The eyelets 15 and 16 are disposed in spaced relation as shown in the drawings to accommodate supporters such as indicated by the numeral 18 of various lengths, also to accommodate the variation to be found in the length of the leg of the wearersof the garters. It will be understood that the supporters 18 are attached to the skirt of the corset or to the belt. sometimes substituted therewith.
It will be readily seen that any undue strains which may be imparted by the supporters 18 will be taken up by the supporters 9 and 10, and the danger of tearing the stocking will be thereby obviated.
Claims.
1. A garter comprising. a plurality ofnonfor encircling the leg above the knee; and' a` plurality of guide loops formed on said sup ports adjacent the upper end thereof for loosely holding said continuous band in service.
2. 4vA garter comprising an `open ended band for encircling'the leg below-the knee, said band embodying a plurality of elastic sections disposed in spaced relation to one $5. oles disposed lengthwise g another, the ends of said sections being permanentlyll attached to the sides of non-elastic supports, a plurality vof said supports, each having a vertical extension above said band to extend above the knee of the wearer, said supports having a series of eyelets vertically dis osed lin spaced relation forbeing adjustab y connected to the attaching device of a strap supporter; a plurality of guide loops mounted on said supports adjacent the upper ends thereof; al continuous elastic open ended band for extension through said loops for encircling the le l-of the wearer above the knee; and means or fastening the ends of said bands in service.
