Description
1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. OCONN'OR, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T0 WILLIAM H. MINER, OF
CHAZY, NEW YORK. 7
SIDE BEARING FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 4:, 19 20.
Application filed March 1, 1916. Serial No. 81,329.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jonrn F. OGoNNon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement inside Bearings for Railway-Cars, of which the following 1s a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in side bearings for railway cars.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and eflicient side hearing.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view of a pair of car bolsters (only a part of the bolsters being shown in the drawing) with my improved side bearing mounted between them. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of a side bearing. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. at is an enlarged longitudinal section taken on line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 indicates the body-bolster of a railroad car, substantially one-half of the bolster being shown, 6 a truck-bolster, of which a similar portion is shown, and 7 my improved side bearing mounted in the usual position between the bolsters. One of the bolsters, preferably the body-bolster, is provided with a bearing plate 8 which is opposed in its position to the side bearing 7 The side bearing 7 is provided with a pair of rollers 9-9, preferably cylindrical in shape and each having an axle 10 passing therethrough. The ends of the axle are received in apertures 12-12 provided in the arms 13-13 of the roller supporting cradle 14. The cradle 14: comprises a base member 15 with a pair of spaced-apart arms 13 extended from either side thereof, each pair being adapted to receive a roller hereinbefore described. The supporting axle 10 for each of the rollers is secured at its ends against accidental displacement by suitable means such as the cotters 1616. The face 17 of the base member of the cradle rests against the bolster upon which the roller bearing is mounted, and is substantially spherically crowned. The said crowned face is convex and permits universal movement of the cradle. The opposite face 18 of the base member 15 of the cradle is provided with a concavity 19 to receive the crown 20 of the saddle 21. The arms 2222 of the saddle are provided with flanges 23 engaging the bolsteroli, the said flanges being suitable apertured as at 24 for the passage of suitable securing means as the rivets 25. The saddle holds the cradle in position upon the bolster. A plate or shoe 26 is mounted upon the bolster 6, the said shoe being provided with a substantially central depression to receive the crowned face 17 of the base member 15 of the cradle.
When the cradle is in its normal position, as illustrated in the drawings, the plane of the bearing plate 8, the axes of the rollers, and the face of the bolster to which the cradle is secured are substantially parallel.
On relative movement of the truck and body-bolster, in instances where such movement causes the plane of the bearing plate 8 to become angular to the bolster to which the cradle is secured, on engagement of the bearing plate 8 against the rollers the same are automatically adjusted to a position where their axes are parallel to the face of the bearing plate 8 through their rocking movement with the cradle, which oscillates universally between the bolster 6 and the crown 19 of the saddle.
I claim 1. In a side bearing for railway cars, in combination: a bearing plate, rollers to engage said plate, a cradle forming a mounting for the rollers, a member upon which the cradle is seated, and a saddle secured to said member and passing over the cradle between the rollers.
2. In a side bearing for railway cars, in combination: a bearing plate, rollers to engage said plate, a cradle forming a mounting for the rollers, a member upon which the cradle is seated, and a saddle secured to said member and passing over the cradle between the rollers, the cradle having oscillating movement between the saddle and the said member.
3. In a side bearing for railway cars, in combination: a bearing plate, rollers to engagesaid plate, a cradle forming a mounting for the rollers, a member upon which the cradleis seated, and a saddle secured to said member and passing over the cradle between the rollers, the saddle having a crown engaging the cradle, the cradle moving on said crown on oscillating movement of the cradle.
4. In a side bearing for railway cars, in combination: a bearing plate, rollers to engage said plate, a cradle forming a mounting for the rollers, a member upon which the cradle is seated, and a saddle secured to said member and passing over the cradle, the saddle being provided with a crown engaging the cradle, and the cradle being provided with a crown engaging the member to which the saddle is secured, the cradle being permitted a universal movement.
5. In a side bearing for railway cars, a bolster, an opposed bolster having a bearing plate, a saddle and a cradle, the cradle being provided with a base member and having outwardly'extended arms and rollers mounted between said arms, the base member being provided with a crown engaging a bolster, the saddle being secured to said bolster and passing over the base member of the cradle.
6. In a side bearing for railway cars, a bolster, an opposed bolster having a bearing plate, a saddle and a cradle, the cradle being provided with a base member and having outwardly extended arms and rollers mounted between said arms, the base member being provided with a crown engaging a bolster, the saddle being secured to said bolster and having a crown engaging the base member.
7. In a side bearing for railway cars, the combination with a bolster, of a cradle, a pair of rollers mounted on said cradle with their axes parallel, and a saddle for retaining said cradle in operative position, the cradle being oscillatable bodily about an axis parallel to the axes of the rollers.
8. In a side bearing for railway cars, the combination with a cradle of a pair of rollers carried by said cradle, and a saddle extended over said cradle, the saddle being adapted to be secured to a bolster to retain the cradle in position, said saddle and cradle being provided with a bearing therebetween permitting universal movement of the cradle.
9. In a side bearing for railway cars, in combination: a bolster, a bearing plate thereon, an opposed bolster, a saddle secured thereto, a cradle, rollers mounted on said cradle, the saddle passing between said rollers and over the cradle, the cradle having oscillating movement between the saddle and bolster.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 16th day of Feb, 1916.
JOHN F. OOONNOR.
