CONTROL APPARATUS.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FERDINAND G. MoAnD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Turtle Creek, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Control Apparatus, of which the following is a specification. e
My invention is o1' general application but relates more specifically to control apparatus and particularly to {luid-actuated mechanisms lfor operating drum controllers.
One obj ect of my invention is to provide a device of the above-indicated character that shall be relatively inexpensive to construct, compact and of light weight.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device in which relatively short vcylinders, that may be constructed from pressed steel, may be used.
Heretoore, such fluid-actuated devices as have been proposed for operating contro ler drums, have embodied relatively long cast-iron cylinders and a plurality of opposing pistons mounted on the same rods an adapted for reciprocal operation within the cylinders. Such relatively long cylinders may be satisfactorily formed by casting only and, because of inherent flaws in the castings, a large proportion of the cylinders leak and must either be sealed with anfimpregnating compound or discarded.
My invention provides the use of stationary piston stems and two short Acylinders that are secured in an end-to-end alinement and have reciprocal operation with respect to the coperating stationary piston stems. The relatively short cup-shaped cylinders used in the device hereinafter described may be formed from pressed steel, thereby etfecting a material saving in the expense of the cylinder member and providing a cylinder member of relatively light weight and great strength.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing is a top view, partially in section and partially in plan, of a control device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line II-II of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line III- III of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a schematic diagram of the proposed control apparatus embodying a modified operative connection between the actuating cylinders and the control drum.

prises a base 1, a plurality of piston stems 2 that are rigidly attached to the base member, a plurality of cup-shaped cylinders 3 that are secured in end-to-end alinement and are disposed, around the piston stems 2, magnet valves 4 and 5 for controlling the admission of fluid, under pressure, to the cylinders 3, and a rotatably mounted drum 6 that is operatively connected to the cyll a cylinder 3. A sealing gasket 15 provides a Huid-tight joint between the support 10 and the Huid inlet pipe 13. The magnet valves 4 and 5 are, respectively, an inverted valve and a standard valve of usual construction. The inverted valve 4, which is schematically illustrated in Fig. 4, is adapted to admit fluid from the pipe 13 to the cylinder 3 through the opening 9 when the valve is de- 'enervized and to establish a passageway V from the cylinder 3 through the opening 11 to the atmosphere when the valve is energized. The standard valve 5 is adapted to establish a connection from the cylinder 3 to the atmosphere when the valve is denergized and to admit fluid to the cylinder 3 when the valve is energized. The hollow piston stem 2 has a piston head 17 secured thereto by a hollow bolt 18 which is provided with a head and is adapted to be threaded into the hollow valve stem 2. The piston head 17 comprises a base washer 19, a preferably leather gasket 20, an expander 21, a follow washer 22 and a lock washer 23. The hollow bolt 18 provides for the admission of fluid from the duct 14 to the cylinder 3. The cup-shaped cylinders 3 are secured to an interposed disk 24, in end-to-end relation, by a rivet 8 that makes a fluid-tight joint with the cylinders 3. The disk 24 has two oppositely -and outwardly-projecting lugs 25 that are adapted to coperate with the saddle 7 to actuate the drum member 6. The drum 6 is rigidly attached to a shaft 26 :soA
which is rotatably mounted on the uprights 27 and is secured to the saddle 7. A plurality of Contact iingers 28 are adapted to engage suitable conducting segments that are mounted upon the drum 6.
A proposed modilieation of the conneeting means between the cylinders 3 and the drum I6 is illustrated in Fig. -l and is adapted to rotate the cylinders G through a greater angle than would be possible by the use of the saddle 7. A rack 29 is rigidly attached to the side oi the cylinders 3 and is adapted .to engage a pinion 30 that is secured to the shaft 26. This modification avoids the use of the interposed disk 24 and thereby economizes space and weight.
To operate such a device as I have herein described, the magnet valves l and 5 are energized to admit fluid, under pressure, to the right-hand cylinder' 3 from the valve 5 and establish a connection from the left-hand cylinder t0 the atmosphere through the valve 4, thereby actuating the cylinders to the left. If it is desired to stop the motion of the cylnders at any point, the valve il is denergized which immediately establishes an opposing pressure in the left hand cylinder and thereby stops further movement of the device.
Although I have described my invention secured in end-to-end relation by a rivet n'ialing a fluid-tight connection therewith.
