Description

A. MAGIMOREC.
CAR DUMP DOOR OPERATOR- APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 9, 1919.
Patented Apr. 27, 1920.
" I E STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW MAG-IMOREC, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
GAR-DUMP-DOOR OPERATOR.
T 0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW MAeIMoREo, a citizen of Austria, and a resident of Pittsburgh, county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Dump- Door Operators, of which the following-isa full and clear specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple device for application to the chain- I shaft of a dump-car door to enable the door to be opened under load-pressure without danger to the operator, the preferred construction embodying means whereby the door may be opened to any degree desired and held at that point without strain upon or danger to the operator, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing- Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a center-dump car showing my device applied thereto;
Figs. 2, 8 and at are detail views hereinafter set forth.
The device in its preferred construction consists of a bar a bifurcated at one end for the reception of the worm-gear 1) whose hubs c are journaled in the members 03 formed by the bifurcation. Extending clear through the hubs c and the gear I) is a squared passage adapted to receive the squared end 6 of the usual chain-shaft of the dump-door, said shaft 6 being usually provided with a load-sustaining ratchetwheel f and pawl g.
Meshing with the worm-gear b is a Worm it whose shaft 2' is journaled in the bar a at right angles to the axis of the worm-gear Z2. One end of this shaft extends beyond the face of bar a and has affixed to it a ratchetwheel j, and pivoted upon the extended end it of the shaft 71 is a hand-lever Z which is providedwith a spring-pressed pawl m for engagement with the ratchet-wheel j.
The application and the operation of the device will be apparent from the drawings. The wrench-like worm-gear is applied to the angular end 0 of the chain-shaft and the opposite end of the bar a is allowed to rest in the hook-like support 02 fastened to the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 9, 1919.

car-body at a suitable distance from the chain-shaft, and then the usual load-sustaining pawl g is disengaged from the ratchetwheel f, whereupon the weight of the load is transmitted through the medium of the worm-gear Z) and worm h to the load-sustaining bar a. Then, by horizontally swinging the lever Z back and forth, the wormgear 71, will be rotated step-by-step to permit the weight of the load on the dumpdoor to open the door to the desired degree. The use of the worm-gearing makes the device self-locking, so that it will not be possible for the load to suddenly dump itself when the usual pawl g is released.
A feature of importance in my device is that it may be applied to the standard dumpcars without the addition thereto of anything more than a supporting hook or-lug a. It will be observed also that the device may be used for winding up the chain for closing the door by simply removing the device from the chain-shaft and reversing it before re-applying it thereto.
I have shown in Fig. 4; an angular bushing 0 for insertion in the squared axial passage of the worm-shaft for use on chainshafts of a small diameter, and l have also shown an extra pawl 92 which may be brought into use by reversing the ratchetlever Z in case the pawl n is damaged enough to render it inoperative.
The nature and scope of the invention having been thus indicated and its preferred embodiment having been specifically described, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a device of the class set forth, a load-sustaining bar carrying a self-locking gearing for temporary engagement with the chain-shaft, and a supporting device on the car for the free end of said barn 2. In a device of the class set forth, a load-sustaining bar carrying at one end a worm-gear having an angular axial passage for engagement with the end of the chainshaft of the dump-door, a worm for operating said gearing and a lever and ratchet arrangement for operating said worm, and a supporting device on the car for the other end of said load-sustaining bar.
3. In a device of the class set forth, a ratchet-Wheel, and a device on the car for 10 load-sustaining bar having journaled in one supporting the other end of the load-sustainend a W0rm-gear, said gear having a squared ing bar. axial passage extending entirely through it In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my to enable the gear to be removably engaged. signature.
with the squared end of the chain-shaft, of ANDREW MAGIMOREC. the dump-door, a Worm engaging said gear Witnesses: and provided With a ratchet-Wheel, and 0s- CHAS. B. STEWART,
eillatable ratchet-lever for operating said EMMA, MdKAMIsH.
