ASA DOLEN, OF TARRYT`0WN, NEW YORK.
PORTABLE LEAF AND WASTE FURNACE.
To all whom t may concern: i
Be it known that I, ASA DOLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing atTarrytown, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Leaf and W'aste Furnaces, of which the following is a specific-ation.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in furnaces and has particular reference to a novel form of portable leaf and waste furnaces.
The object of my invention is to provide a portable all metal furnace for use around buildings. YWith this fact in view it is made of a very pleasing and artistic design so as not to appear unsightly when being moved about a lawn on a public place for the purpose of collecting leaves, grass, and other waste products.
A further object of my invention is to provide a hingedly connected door adjacent the base of the hopper to give access thereto to remove stones and other incombustible substances which may be deposited with the leaves, grass and other waste products.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device not so much for collecting waste products as for safely and eXpeditiously incinerating such products. lVth this object in view, free circulation of air is provided by having a hopper shaped body constructed with sides, ends, and a bottom of open lattice work.
@ther objects of this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the detailed description and the drawings forming a part of this specification.
Referring further to the drawing similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout the various views. The hopper or waste container is formed of lattice metal and reinforced along the upper edges by the metal strip 1, along the ylower edges based by metal strips 2 and around the corners with the sides and ends by angle iron standards 10. It has been found desirable to have the sides and ends converge inwardly toward the bottom as is clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawing. The waste container as thus formed is mounted at 11 upon the extremities of an axle bracket 13, while the lower end of said bracket is mounted upon axle 4, which carries wheels 6 at its ends. Shafts 9 project forwardly from the Specification of Letters Patent.

sides at the bottom of the container, said shafts having fixed to the free ends thereof a handle 7. A bracket rest 5 is mounted on the under side of said shafts and extending downwardly for such distance as willmaintain the basket on va substantially level plane when the furnace is at rest.
At each of the four corners of the basket, and suspended downwardly therefrom is a rod 3, to the lower ends of which is secured an ash tray 2 slightly greater in length and width than the length and width of the top of the container, said tray being adapted to catch the ashes which sift through the latticed bottom and sides as the waste material is consumed by the fire in the container.
At one of the ends of my basket I provide an opening therein adjacent the base bar 12 to provide means for gaining access to the interior of the basket. Above the said opening an angle iron strip 14 is provided to which the latticed work 15 is attached. A door member 19 is hingedly connected to the angle iron strip 14 and to a second inverted angle iron strip 17 connected to the base 12. A plurality of openings are provided in said angle iron strips adjacent the ends thereof for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. The door 16 comprises a pair of longitudinal angle iron strips 18 and a pair of vertical strips 19 having the ends thereof connected by means of rivets or other securing means. The longitudinal strips 18 project slightly beyond the connection with the strips 19 and are provided with openings therein to register with the first mentioned openings in the angle iron strips 14 and 17. I provide a pair of keys 20 adapted to engage the openings in the said strips `to provide means for hingedly connecting the door and locking the same in a closed position. It will be seen that by removing one of said keys the other key member provides a hinge for the said door.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the y applicant has provided a means for gaining access to the interior of the basket which will provide an efficient means for removing stones and obstacles, which have been a continuous hindrance for leaf burning furnaces.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope oi2 the invention as claimed. Y
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to be secured by Letters Patent, is
A trash burning device having foraininous body, an end wall of the body being provided with an opening in the lower portion thereof, opposed angle guide strips secured to the said wall above and below the openingl therein, a gate for closing said opening and adapted to be, carried within said opposed angle guide strips and including longitudinal upper and lower angle strips, and end strips secured to said angle strips for reinforcing the ends thereof, and pins extending through the opposite ends of the gate and conti uous portions of the strips and re- Inova le independently whereby the door or gate may be swungopen in either direction or removed entirely from between the strips carried above and below the opening.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto.
ASA DOLEN.
