WINIDOO-LOCK.
isernia.
Application tiled `l'lete'te; 3,
Be i lmown that l, llnnnnnror; l-l'anonrrair: a citizen el the United States, residing at CantonT in the county oit Stark and State oi Ohio, have invented a new and usetul TF.Tndow-laoclr, of which the following is a specification.
rlfhis invention relates to improvements in loels and more particularly to a loci: adaptable Ylor use upon cellar windows such as are provided for filling a coal bin from the outside.
rlhe objects of the invention are to provide a lock oit' this character which will automatically loclr when the window is closed; to provide means within the house .for unlatching the lock; to provide means for opening` the window when the latch is unlatched and to generally improve and simplify locks of this character.
lVith these objects in view the invention consists in the nevel construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings. and particularly pointed out in the appended claimsj it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of construction may be made within the scope or the appended claims. without departing from the spirit er sacriiicing any of the advantages of the invention.
rhe invention thus set forth in general terms is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in whichlligure 1 is a front elevation of a window showing the lock applied thereto.
llig is a side elevation ol the loclr partly in section.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View oi2 the lock.
F ig. l is a detail perspective view of the cover plate of the lock.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the lock casing, and
liig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the sliding latch member.
A practical embodiment olI the invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The sash 1 of a window such as is ordinarily used in cellars is shown hinged in the To all whom t may concern Specification of Letters Patent.
1919. Serial No. usual nia-nner 2 to the trame 8, the sash l carrying t it or swinging edge a bar l arra" ge the lock as will ne: i c d.
comprises three principal parts, 'the casin 5 best illustrated in ig. 5, the sliding latch member 6 shown in llig. 6 and the cover plate if" illustrated in Fig. The casing 5 is'mounted in a suitable socket 8 termed in the window 'frame 3;, the sliding latch member being slidably mounted within said casing, the cover plate 7 retaining the latch member within the casing. The cover and casing are permanently attached to the the window trame by means of screws 9 or their equivalents.
rlhe sliding latch member G is of channel shape in cross section and comprises the bacli portion 10 having a lip i1 at its upper extremity, the flange and the llange 13 which latter llange is provided at its upper and lower ends respectively vwith the ears le and 15 arranged to be slidably protruded through the elongated slot 1G termed in the cover plate.
The ear le is provided with the downwardly and rearwardly inclined lower edge 1'? terminating in the upwardly disposed recess 1S and the ear 15 is provided with the upwardly and rearwardly inclined upper edge 19. coil spring 2O is connected at its upper end to the lip 11 upon 'the sliding latch member and at its lower end to the pin :21 upon the cover plate i' normally held ing the sliding latch member in position shown in lig. 2, the bar l upon the winconv sash being retained within. the recess 18 in the ear 14% normally holding' the window locked in the closed position.
vFor the purpose of unlocking the device from the interior i the house a wire or other Flexible member 22 is. attached through a suitable aperture 23 in the sliding atch member, this wire being connected at its upper end to a substantially horizontally disposed wire Zvi connected one end as shown at Jo to any su )le portion oi' the wall or ceiling` of the celui-f.v the other end thereotl extending some considerable distance from the wire and being connected as shown at 26 at any convenient point.
lWhen it is desired to open the window the wire 2d is grasped at a place near the connecting point 26 and a pull upon the wire will raise thD sliding latch member 6 causing the bar fl to be pushed away from the latch member as it rides upon the inclined face 19.
When the window is closed the upper edge of the bar l will engage the downwardly inclined under edge of the ear le, sliding the catch member upwardly against the. pull of the. spring until the bar passes beyond the lower end or' the edge l? when `the spring will draw the catch member down seating the bar l2 in the recess 8 locking the window.
l claim l. A lock for a hinged window including a hinged casing mounted upon the window frame, a channel shaped sliding latch member mounted therein and provided with a pair of outwardly tapered ears and with a recess, the casing being provided with a slot through which said ears protrude, a bar carried bythe window sash and arranged to be received between the ears and means for normally holding the recess in engagement with the bar.
2. A loclr for a hinged window including a hinged casing mounted upon the window frame, a channel shaped sliding latch member mounted therein and provided with a pair ol outwardly tapered ears and with a recess, the casing being provided with a slot through which said ears protrude, a bar carried by the window sash and arranged to be received between the ears, and a coil spring located within the channel shaped latch member and connecting the latch member and casing to normally hold the recess in engagement with the bar.
3. t lock for a hinged window including a hinged casing mounted upon the window "rame, a channel shaped sliding latch member mounted therein and provided with a pair of outwardly tapered ears and with a recess, the casing being provided with a slot through which said ears protrude, a bar carlried by the window sash and arranged to be received between the ears and means for normally holding the recess in engagement with the bar and means 'for sliding the latch member to throw the recess out of engagement with the bar.
e. .fr loclr tor a hinged window including a hinged casino' mounted upon the window iframe, a channel shaped sliding latch member mounted therein and provided with a pair of outwardly tapered. ears and with a recess, the casing being provided with a slot through which said ears protrude, a bar carried by the window'sash and arranged to be received between the ears, and a coil spring located within the channel shaped latch member and connecting the latch member and casing to normally hold the recess in engagement with the bar, and means for sliding the latch member against the action of the spring to throw the bar out of the recess.
ln testimony that l claim the above l have hereunto subscribed my name.
