Description

H. R. BASFORD.-
CAMP BED. APPUCATIGN FILED SEPT-4, 1917.
Patented Mar. 30, 1920.- I F/E.
F/GIZ M R m4. N m L U M H HAROLD .R. BASFCRD, 0F SAN FRANCISCO, DALIFORNIFA.
GAME-BED.
Application filed September 4, 1917.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HAROLD R. Basrono, citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful Camp-Bed, of *hich. the following is av specification in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same.
This invention relates to a camp bed or folding bed frame intended to provide means whereby a convenient bed frame may be produced for the use of campers or others, and which is capable of being folded up and rolled into small compass when not in use.
An object of the invention is to provide means whereby the springs will be supported high enough above the side rails to enable the springs to carry the weight of a person happening to sit upon them without allowing much weight to rest upon the side rails.
Another object or the invention is to provide means whereby the springs will be supported a slight distance above the side rails thereby'enabling the springs to be adequately stretched and to provide a bed frame that is readily set up and which'will easily stretch the springs used.
Other objects of the invention will ap pear as the description proceeds,
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawings in which the same reference numeral is applied to the same portion throughout, but I am aware that there ma be modifications thereof.
- Figure l is a perspective view of the complete bed setup ready for use, I
'Fig. 2 is a view of the bed in process of being set up for use, and
Fig. 3 is a view showing one'side rail and the attached legs carried thereby as they appear when folded up; v
The numeral 1 indicates one of the bed frame cross pieces, 2 an oppositely placed cross piece to which the bed springs, which may be of any'suitable form, are attached, as indicated at 3. 4 to 7 inclusive, which are pivotallycou nected to the ends of the side rail pieces 8 to ll'inclusive. Each is is connected with its sidepiece about 4 inc ies belowits upper specification of Letters Patent.
The bed has four legs Patented lillar 3%), 1920. Serial No. 189,498.
end, and each leg is provided with a rivet having a large head as indicated at 12 to and 2 having such in the end piece.2.
1 and. 2 and have hooked ends as pieces 8 and. 9 are pivotally connected respectively to the ends of the side pieces 11 and 10 respectively, and in order to strengthen the joint at the ends oi the pieces 8 and 9 short pieces of angle iron 22, 23, are riveted to said side pieces, and they form a channel in which the turn.
The bed is set up as illustrated in Fig. 2,
in which the legs 5 and 7 are shown just in the ppsition to be connected with the braces 15, or" which there the four legs. In this figure the end frames carrying the springs have been connected with three legs and the end frame 1 is laid upon the ground and connected by means of one of the pins 12 on the leg 5. So 1011 as the pieces 8, 9. and 10, 11 are not pu led down into a straight line, as shown in Fig. l, the springs 3 are slack but as soon as the end pieces 1 and side pieces 10, 11 have been pushed down into a straight line, such as is illustrated in Fig. 1, they pass slightly out of a straight line at the joint adjacent the angles 22, 23, whereupon the bed is then turnedover right side up, and is ready for use.
When being set up, one person stands on one end of the bed and another pushes down on the other end, or one end may be placed under any heavy object, as for eX- ample, an automobile wheel and the, weight vapplied to the opposite end of the bed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent'oi the United States, is as follows, expresss reservation being -made of permissible modifications. A'folding bed frame comprising the combination of two pairs of 'pivotally connected side pieces 10 and 11 is one brace for each of lac side rails, a, leg pivetafiy eei'meeized in cer mediate its ends to the one end 01 each M111, :1 bed fabric, angle members to which the bed fabric is connected at its ends, said angle members being slotted to be cennecbed to the upper ends of the legs, eight braces detachebiy connecting the and rails, side rails and legs to hold the frame rigid, and
short angle pietes on we of the Siiiie rails to hold the other two rails eiinei when the bed 10 fabric is being stretched and the bed set up.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this Mth (12 3 of August A D. 191.
HAROLD R. BASFORD.
