Description
W. WINKLEH.
CAN COVER REMOVER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 25. 1919.
1,335,084. Patented Mar. 30, 1920.
UNITED STATES lgnnir OFFICE.
"WILLIAM 'WINKLER, or sANDU'sKY, OHIO.
CAN-COVER BEMOVER.
Application filed September 25. 1919.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM WINKLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sandusky, in the county of Erie, State of Ohio have invented a new and useful Can- Cover Remover; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to cover removers for cans and has for its object to provide a can carried spring arm adapted to be normally disposed between the can cover and the upper edge of the can when the can cover is in frictional engagement with the can opening, said spring arm forming means when forced inwardly to break the frictional engagement of the can cover within the can opening thereby allowing the removal of the can cover by the insertion of a finger thereunder.
A further object is to provide the margi- I nal edge of a can with a depression, in which the inner end of a spring arm carried by the can is normally disposed, the depression allowing the can cover to fit closely on the top of the can. The spring arm when forced inwardly engaging the flange of the can cover thereby raising the same.
A further object is to provide a can cover remover sothat the cover of the can may be easily removed when desired which is particularly advantageous in lard cans, syrup cans and the like in which particular form of cans it'is necessary to remove the cover several times before the contents of the can is completely removed.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure l is a perspective view of a can showing the cover remover applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a large detail View showing the remover as having been forced inwardly Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 326.216.
and the edge of the can cover forced upwardly thereby.
Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view of a portion of the marginal edge of the can showing the inner end of the can remover spring disposed in a depression therein.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a conventional form of can preferably of the type used for lard, syrup and the like and 2 an inwardly extending annular marginal flange forming an opening'3 for the can." The marginal flange 2 extends inwardly and downwardly and terminates at its inner edge in a downwardly extending flange a forming a frictional binding surface for the wall 5 of the can cover 6. The wall 5 is provided with an annular flange 7 adapted to overlie the flange 2 of the cans when the cover 6 is in place in the opening 2. Flange 2 is provided with a stamped depression 8 and secured to the outer periphery of the can 1 by soldering as at 9 is a spring arm 10, which spring arm extends upwardly and outwardly and is bent as at 11 at a point above the flange 7 of the cover when said cover is in position within the can opening. Spring 10 after being bent at 11 extends inwardly and downwardly and is formed with a compound curve 12 and has its free end 13 disposed in the depression 8. By referring to Fig. 2 it will be seen that when the thumb is placed against the spring as at a and forced inwardly that the free end 13 of the spring arm will move inwardly in the depression 8 and that the compound curve of the spring arm will engage the edge 13 of the flange 7, thereby forcing said flange upwardly and allowing the flange to slide over the portion of the spring arm formed with a compound curve until the cover has been raised sufficiently to allow the same to be removed by the finger.
It will be seen that by locating the free end 13 of the spring arm in the depression 8 that the cover will be allowed to fit closely in the opening 3 and the flange 7 thereof to come into engagement with the upper marginal edge of the case. It will also be seen that by the use of a spring arm of this character that the cover may be easily and quickly removed when it is desired to use the contents within the can. This is particularly advantageous in lard cans, syrup cans and the like wherein it is essential to enter the cans many times before the contents thereof is consumed. By the use of such a cover remover it will be seen that the cover of syrup cans may be quickly removed and replaced thereby preventing the entrance of flies into the can.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. The combination with a can and cover therefor, said can having an inwardly and downwardly extending flange forming an opening for the reception of a flanged can closure, of a springarm secured to the side of the can and extending outwardly upwardly and downwardly and inwardly, a depression in the flange of the can opening and the free end of the spring arm disposed within said depression, said spring arm forming means when forced inwardly to engage the flange of the cover thereby forcing the same upwardly.
2. The combination with a can and cover therefor, said can having an inwardly and downwardly extending flange forming an opening for the reception of a flanged can closure, of a spring arm secured to the side of the can, said spring arm extending upwardly and outwardly and bent downwardly at a point above the flange of the can cover when said cover is in position in the opening of the can, the downwardly extending portion of the spring arm being formed with a compound curve and having its end disposed in a depression in the flange of the can opening, said compound curve forming an inclined surface for engaging and forcing upwardly the cover flange when the spring arm is forced inwardly for removing the can cover.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
lVILLIAM WINKLER.
