To all whom it may concern .lle it known that l, JAMns (ironnon, a citizen oi the United States, residing at llfionmouth, in the county of Warren, State of lllinois, have invented a new and useful lnTulshing-Chain; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved. soil mulshing chain, and an object o1 the invention is to provide an improved device of this kind particularly adapted for use in connection with rotary harrows more especially of the type illustrated, set forth and claimed in the ce-pending application filed ctth day of lctober, 1918, @erial No. 256,889, in the name of James Gordon.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved, practical and ethcient soil mulshing chain, in which improved means is provided for connecting the soil mulshing teeth or prongs to the chain.
it further object of the invention is to provide extensions on the outer overlapping links or the usual sprocket chain, in which a. transverse end of each of a series of mulshing teeth or prongs is mounted, the body of each mulshing tooth or prong being provided with a coil to engage an adjacent transverse end, in combination with means on the transverse end to hold the end and the coil in place.

overlapping links 2 and 3, there being headed pins l including nuts 5 for pivotally connecting the link. Rollers or sleeves 6 are mounted upon the pins between the ends of the inner links, to hold the various links spaced whereby the chain may operate on the sprocket (not shown). Said rollers or sleeves are designed to engage between the cogs of the sprocket so that the chain will freely move over the sprocket and reduce the friction to a minimum. The outer links are provided with extensions 7 having oppositcly arranged registering apertures 8. Each niulshing tooth constructed from a heavy piece of steel. wire or red material, and the body 8 and 9 of each tooth is turned to form a coil or eye 10. One end. of the body terminates in a downwardly curved mulshing tooth or prong 11 having its end sharpened as shown at 12. The chain is de: signed to be arranged a. shown in the present application and as shown in the said copending application, whereby the teeth or prongs may engage the soil, so as to thoroughly agitate the same and break up the clods as the chain revolves. The other end of the body terminates in a transverse part 1.3 which engages the openings 8 of the extensions. The end portions of the transverse parts pass through the coils or eyes 10 of the bodies of the teeth or prongs, there being nuts l l threaded on the extremities, to hold the transverse parts in place, and to secure the coils or eyes in position adjacent the outer linl It is to be observed that the bodies oi the teeth or prongs are arranged on opposite sides oi the sprocket chain adj acent the exterior links, and also in staggered relations, whereby the eyes or coils and the niulshing teeth or prongs are in staggered relations, so that the prongs may thoroughly agitate the soil and break up the clods. It is obvious that by the staggered arrangement oi the coils, and owing to their formation, the teeth or prongs are held spaced from the exterior links, so as to permit the prongs or teeth to reasonably yield. For instance ow ing to the provision of the coils or eyes the teeth are capable of yielding actions.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. The combination with a sprocket chain, of a plurality of mulshing teeth having bodies provided with coils, one end of each body having a laterally curved prong, the
other end of the body terminating in a transverse part passing through the links of the chain and through the coil, and means threaded on the transverse part to hold the same and the coil in place.
2. The combination with a sprocket chain, of a series of teeth bodies, one end of each body having a lateral part passing transversely through the links of the chain and having a nut thereon, said body having its other end terminating in a yieldable soil mulshing prong, the central part of each body having means to engage the transverse part of an adjacent body to provide resiliency for the prong.
3. The combination with a sprocket chain, of a plurality of teeth bodies, one end of each body having a transverse part passing transversely through the links of the chain and having means to hold the transverse 1.
part in place, the other end of each body having a yieldable soil mulshing tooth, said bodies engaging opposite sides of the chain, whereby the transverse parts pass through the chain in opposite directions, and also whereby the teeth are supported and arranged in staggered relation, and means for connecting the bodies to the adjacent transverse parts, whereby the teeth are yieldably supported.
