To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, llnoiuiis Ti-roMrsoN, a citizen of the United @tates, residing at l-liowe, in the county of line Flore and State oi Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carbiddiiainps, or which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to illumination, and more especially to carbid lamps; and the object oil the same is to produce a miners lamp having means for quickly but detachably connecting the two parts of the lamp body with each other, which means serves also to hold the reflector on the lamp body.
Hitherto these parts have been screwed together, or slipped together and latched, usually by a movement at least partially rotary; but I prefer to slip the members together in such a way as to compress a rela tively thick gasket, hook them to each other at one side, and connect them at the other side by a relatively long loop. My purpose is to utilize this loop additionally as clamping means for holding firmly against the lamp body one of the arms by which the reflector is supported. The invention may he said to consist in the construction of parts whereby this loop of the fastening device will perform its dual function quickly and thoroughly. The idea is more fully explained in the following specification and claim, and shown in the drawings herewith and in which Figure 1 is a right side elevation of this lamp,

This lamp comprises two main parts, the water container W, and the carbid crystal container C. As usual, the former is uppermost, it has at one side a hook or handle H, and at the other side a reflector 1t surrounding the burner B. The reflector has a central hole which may he slipped over the burner where it is held against the body by means oi? a pair of spring arms A, and these are held against dislodgment as de scribed below. The reflector also may carry a lighting device L so that the gas issuing from the burner can be ignited without striking a match. Pendant from the bottom of the water receptacle is a tube T having openings 0 whereby water is fed to the crystals within the lower part C. The feed of water is controlled by a valve Specification of Letters Patent.

whose stem carries a knob K at the upper part of the structure as shown, and the water is replenished from time to time through a filling opening F closed by a suitable cap. 111 the preferred construction of my invention, I reduce the size of the up per end of the cylindrical shell of the lower part C so as to produce a neck 1, between which and the body or this part is a substantially horizontal shoulder 2. Upon the shoulder rests a relatively thick gasket 3, which may be of rubber. Upon the gasket is adapted to rest a flange l outturned from the lower edge of a skirt 5 which is a continuation oi? the shell of the upper part or water reservoir W, beneath its bottom 6. The skirt is of considerable width vertically, and the flange prevents it from cutting the gasket. The neck is 01 considerable height and the gasket rests flat on the shoulder 2. Mounted on the exterior of the upper part iv, and preferably at the left side thereof, is a hook 10 whose bill projects outward as best seen in Fig. Q. Mounted on the exterior of the lower part C at the same side is an eye 11 adapted to he slipped over the tip of the bill when the parts or members are assembled. Mounted on the exterior of the lower part C and at the other side thereof is a hook 13'wl1ose bill projects outward as seen at the right of Fig. 2 and the tip of this bill visible in Fig. 1. On the same side oi? the upper part W and near the upper portion thereof is formed an ear 1st transversely per- :lorated, and within the perforation thercot is hingedly mounted a bail or loop 15 whose width is such that it may straddle the hook 13 as seen in Fig. 1 and whose length is such that its lower end will fall below the bill of this hook. Pivotally mounted on the lower end of: the loop is the head 16 of a cam of semi-avid shape about as seen in Fig. '2, and depending rigidly from this head is a handle or lever 17. The construction of this ele ment is such that, when the cam is turned so that its tip contacts with and presses upwardly against the hook 13, its flat side and its lever 17 hand alongside the lower element C. At this time a considerable strain is thrown onto the loop 15 tending to draw it downward and this is communicated through the ear 14 to the upper member W. Meanwhile the opposite side of this member may not move upward because of the engagement of the hook and eye as previously described. Therefore when the two members are assembled and the male member slipped into the female as shown in Fig. 3, this forin of connection between the n'iembers clamps them or draws them very closely together and compresses the gasket between the flange 4 and the shoulder 2, with the desired result.
In order that this exact term of connection may be employed, it is essential that the depending tube T shall be of such length that it may be passed into the rather long neck 1 of the lower element or member 0, even after the hook and eye have been engaged, but the manufacturers will take care that this construction prevails and that the device is operative. On the false bottom 6 of the upper member is carried a small exten sion 20 perforated around its edge as at 21 tor the admission of gas and containing a suitable filtering material 22. From this chamber leads a pipe 23 which romn'ninicates with the burner B. The size 01 this chamber should be such that it will pass into the mouth. of the neck when the elements are assembled. One striking advantage arising from the use oi the connection described is that the spring arms A on the reflector B will grasp the body 01 the upper member W without in the least interfering with the hook and eye at one side or preventing the operation of the loop 15 at the other side,
and on the contrary, when the loop is brought down by the action oi the cam as shown at the right of Fig. 2, it overlies the arm beneath it and grips said arm tightly against the body. Therefore, the rei'le tor and its arms may not be removed until the connection between the parts of the body is loosened so that the loop trees one of the reflector arms A. Then the reflector can he quickly slipped oil of the lamp as when it needs polishing or it is desired to gain access more freely to the burner B.
