APPLICATION FILED JULY. 1913.
1,334, 188. Patented Mar. 16, 1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROLLA A. SWAN. OF QUINCY, ILLINOIS.
WAR-BILLY.
Application filed July 11, 1918.
To (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROLL. A. Swan, a citizen of the United State of America, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented new and "efnl lln'rprownnents in War- Billies, of "nit-h the following is a. specification.
This invention has reference generally to implements of war and more particularly relates to a war billy.
It is the primary aim and object of this invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character designed to be used in hand to hand lighting and in the nature of a club for disabling the enemy.
More particularly the present invention contemplates the provision of a device of the above cl'laracter embodying a striking or clubbing head and a grip to which the head is yieldingly or resiliently connected.
.l-is afurther improvement this invention inchides the provision. of clamping means of a novel. construction for connecting the ball and the grip to the opposite ends of the resilient and yieldable handle.
among the other aims and objects of this invention. may be recited the provision of a device of the character described with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the constructionsimple and the cost of production low and the eliieiency high.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of this invention will be more readily apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention.
Fig. :2 isa longitudinal sectional detail thereof, and,
Fig. 3 is a perspective detail of one of the clamps.
Similar characters of reference are e1nployed in all of the above described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly to the accompanying drawings there is provided a slightly yieldable and resilient handle con sisting of a relative heavy contractible coil spring 1 to the inner end of which is connected a grip 2 by means of a clamp indi- Specification of Letters Patent.

cated in its entirety by the numeral 3. This clamp embodies a disk-like head t which is engaged between the coils of the spring near one end thereof while projecting from the head. is a shank '5 the outer end of which is threaded and projected through the outer coil and the grip and engaged by a hot 6 which latter coiiperates with the head in the clamping of the grip to the handle.
The grip E2 is preferably of a hollow cylindrical form and serves as a match or other article container while the outer open end is preferably closed by a cap 7.
To render the device effective in hand to hand fighting, a ball-shaped striker 8 preferably of a hard composition of rubber is employed and is formed with a diametidcal bore 9, through which is engaged the shank 10 of a clamp 11. the head 12 of which is en gaged behind the outer coils of the spring handle in a manner similar to the engage merit of the clamp 3, while the outer end of the shank is engaged by a nut- 13 which cooperates with the head in the clamping 0f the striker 8 to the handle, as is apparent.
It is believed to be obvious that the device is used in the nature of a club for striking the enemy, and is especially elfective in hand to hand lighting. The peculiar form of handle is advantageous for *the reason that a blow cannot be easily warded oil", since the engagement of the handle by an opponent would not prevent the striker from having-the desired effect.
In. view of the foregoing description it is believed that a further detailed description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise it is believed. that the advantages of the invention will be reach ily apparent.
As many changes could be made in the above construction. and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof it is intended that all mat ter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limited sense. It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claim is intended. to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein. described and. all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.
Having thus fully described the invention What is claimed and desired to be Letters Patent is A War billy of the character described including a handle embodying a heavy con- 5 tractile spring, a ball-shaped striker having a bore therethrough, a clamp connected to the outer coils of the spring and embodying secured by at head and a shank engaged through the striker, and a nut connected to the shank for retaining the striken mid 1; grip (inn I to the inner coils of the spring handle.
In testimony whereof I :rilir; my signature.
