Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. MLSSS, dated July 24, 1855.

Be it* known that I, JonN ALLENDER, of New London, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Fastening for the Corks of Bottles, Jugs, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the same is described and represented in the following specification and drawings.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use-my invention, Iwill proceed to describe its construction and use, referring to the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the iigures.

Figures l and 2 are side and front elevations of the neck of a bottle, with a cork in the orifice, with the new fastening applied to it. Fig. 3 is a top view of the same.

The nature of my invention consists in arranginga strap of sheet niet-also as to swing across the cork after it is inserted in the oriee of the bottle to hold it in, and in connecting this strap to a strap which partially surrounds the neck of the bottle, so as to form a pair of hinges by means of the wire which fastens both straps to the neck of the bottle, and in making a tongue on the strap which holds the cork in to pass into the score in the plunger which drives the cork and lips to pass each side of said plunger, to fasten the cork before the plunger is removed and hold it in after the plunger is removed and while the strap is being brought over the cork.

In the accompanying drawings, a section of the neck of abottlc is represented at A; B,

the collar surrounding the orifice of the bottle, and C the cork fastened in the orifice byv so as to hold it in the orifice against the pressure of the contents of the bottle, or allow it to be drawn out when required. Nhenthe strap F is perforated, the end of the punch should be beveled oft, so as to cut the metal from one side ot' the hole formed and turn it l out, so that when the strap E is applied to it lthe portion turned out can be bent over, as

represented in Fig. l at h h, so as to prevent the strap E from cutting the wire G as it is vibrated, that portion ot' the .metal turned out being turned toward the end and the lower side of the strap F for that purpose. The top of the strap E may be made in such form where it crosses the cork as will best adapt it to the intended purpose; but I prefer to make 'it in the form represented in the drawingsthat is, with two scores, I I, extending partially across the top, so as to form the tongue J between them and the lips K K on each side, so that when the cork is forced into the orifice of the bottle with a plunger which has a score across the end the strap E can be swung up, so as to bring the tongue J into the score of the plunger over the cork and the lips K K- over edges of the cork C, so as to hold it in while the plunger is removed, when the strap may be swung farther onto the cork, if necessary. The top of the strap E, with the tongue and lips, may be bent or swayed arching, as represented in Fig. 2, so as to make the tongue and lips stiffer, so as to hold the cork stronger than they would otherwise do.

The straps E and F may be made very cheaply from sheet metal with punches and dies properly formed for the purpose and put together, and the wire G put in when they are applied to the neck of the bottle, the ends of the wire being lapped by and twisted together, as represented in the drawings, so as to fasten the straps iirmly to the neck of the bottle.

It will be apparent that the above-described fastening may be applied to most of the bot tles in common use, and that the strap E may beinade either with or without the tongue and lips, and that the strap F may be made without turning lthe portions h h through the strap E when they are preferred that way.

This fastening is peculiarly adapted for fastening the eorks of bottles containing effervescing drinks-such as soda-water, beer, and fluids which act strongly against the corks of the bottles containing them-as it saves the cost of the twine and most of the labor required to apply it.

I Will new specify what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, viz: The strap E, constructed With binge and hook for holding` .in and releasing the @Orks 0r stopples of bottles, jugs, &e., substantially as set forth.
