To all whom itmag concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS O. ROBERTS: a citizen of the United States, residing at Abilene, in the county of Dickinson and State of Kansas, have invented a new and specification.
This invention relates totools and more especially to an improved device for removing or pulling cotter pins or gib keys from a shaft aperture or the like in which the pin is engaged to serve its usual function to retain parts in assembled relation.
The invention has for a further object, the provision of a very simple and extremely effective tool of the above class, which can be very economically manufactured and which serves to drive or pull out the cotter pin or gib key, instead of the usual operation of extracting the same as is common in the art, and which requires unusual strength to obviate complication of struc-. 'ture, and provide a thoroughly practical tool, which permits its use in places where a prying device or straight tool cannot be used, and which is strong and durable.
With the above objects and others in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out and claimed, it being understood that certain modifications and minor changes may be made or resorted to within the scope of the claims, and as defined thereby, without departing from the spirit'of the invention.

Referringto the drawings in detail, in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, my improved cotter pin or gib key removing tool is shown as comprising a body of drill-like construction, and comprising a uniformly tapered elongated member, of suitable cross-section. This. body is preferably uniformly tapered throughout its length, and is shown of polygonal or substantially round or circular cross-section, with the upper, driving or head end thereof as indicated at 11, larger than the opposite end which is adapted to engage the pin 'atthe loop thereof, or other similar member to be removed.
The end 11 13 also shown extending at right angles to the axis of the tool and flat,
atan angle as shown at 1%, not abruptly as would likely breaker fracture the metal, but gradually and at an obtuse angle to the main or shank portion.
The purpose of the bend is clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, as distinguished from Fig. 2 of-the drawings showing the device on an enlargedscale slightly in perspective, is to pernnt the device to be engaged around or between objects in the use 2 of the device. As illustrative, there is shown a frame member or bearing 15 in which is held a bolt 16 by a lock nut 17 having a series of spaced projections producing slots or recesses 18 between which is engaged a cotter pin or gib key 19 after passing through a transverse opening or aperture through said bolt. In this position, t he free ends of thelegs of the cotter pin project from the periphery of the nut, as does the loop or eye 20 forming the head of the cotter pin. Thus, the pointed or tapered end of the device is inserted in the loop at the proper angle, preferably at right angles thereto, or tangentially to the nut, and by hitting or striking the same a blow with an object such as a hammer 21, by hand, upon the driving-end or head, the pin will be easily, effectively and readily dislodged. b
' The tool is not used to pry the cotterpin or key out, as numerous "other devices for extracting purposes, and the advantage of the device over all others, is the fact that this device will take out a cotter-key in any place no matter how difficult and inaccessible it may seem to be, by slipping the tool against the head of the cotter-key'and 1 giving it a few tapswith a hammer, or. any object, as shown inlhg. 1 of the drawings. Also, after the tool is dr ven into the head of tl e cotter-pin, the latter will not slip up usual methods or extractors and in inaccessible places, and the length can be varied and the device used where a straight tool cannot be used, also as a pinch bar for prying purposes and so forth. It is also noted that when the device is in use, the end 12 will extend through the eye atright angles and the bar will extend substantially at right angles to cause the removing force to be exerted lengthwise of thepin.
Having thus r escribed my invention, what I claim is; o
1. A tool for removing cotter pins, gib keys or the like comprising a tapered body or bar having one end thereof of less degree of taper and extended at a continuous curved angle at obtuse angles to the body.
