- a citizen of the United States, residing at Medford, in the county of Middlesex, in the WASTE-PLUG For. wAsiI'BowLs.
Application filed April 4,1918. Serial No. 226,578.
To all whom itmag concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN M. HARKINS,
State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Waste- Plugs for Vaslrbowls, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. 7
' The object of this invention is to provide a reasonably cheap, and specially convenient, form of plug for the waste outlets of wash bowls, bath tubs and the like, which may take the place of rubber plugs now commonly used, and which will have embodied therein a special screen and a closure valve that may be controlled as to its closing and opening movements by an operating handle which is inconspicuously located at the bottom of the bowl.
My said invention is clearly illustrated in and by the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a central, vertical, sectional view of a plug of my preferred construction, and Fig. 2 is a transverse, sectional, view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring to these drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a portion of a wash bowl and 11 denotes the usual thimble fixedly mounted in the lower part of the bowl and serving as a waste outlet; said thimble having at its lower end one or more fixed transverse bars 12 which are designed to prevent the passage of foreign matter such as pieces of soap, leaves, hair, etc.
My presentimproved form of plug is designed to be slipped into the thimble 11 and t0 fit so tightly therein that it will not become displaced by ordinary usage, yet it may be removed readily whenever it is desired to clean or repair it.
My said plug, therefore, includes a tubular member 13 which is slightly tapered outside and is thus adapted to be entered, and wedged, in the thimble 11, as seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the tube 13 serving to receive and support the operative parts of my device.
I will first describe the plug illustrated in Fig. 1. The upper end portion of the tube 13 is counterbored to provide a seat for a per forated disk 14 which serves as a strainer,
to- Fig. 2 of the drawings, said platebeing. 6
provided with an opening 17 that is adapted to receive the lower end portion of the post 15 already mentioned.
Secured to, or fixed upon, the post 15 is a semi-circular plate 18 which" rests upon the plate 16 (see Fig. 1) and secured to the upper end of said post is a handle 19 by means of which the post and its plate 18 may be rotated, or partially rotated.
In order to prevent endwise play of the post 15 I have threaded the lower end portion of said post and have screwed thereon a nut 20 and, preferably, a check nut 21, said nuts being so adjusted that the movable plate 1.8 and the fixed plate 16 are held in reasonably close engagement with each other-at all times yet not so tightly as to prevent the rotary movement-of the post and its plate 18.
It should be noted that the hub of the handle 19, when clamped to the upper end of the post 15, serves also to prevent the accidental displacement of the screen disk 14.
When the two plates 16 and 18, are in their related positions, shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, they completely close the opening in tube 13 and thus prevent the passage therethrough of the waste water and.
By'the use Of a plug of my described con struction, the waste water is strained before it passes out of the bowl, thus leaving all extraneous m'atter, such as hair. soap. etc, in
' when it is desired to open a passage for said the bowl where it can be readily cleaned out instead of permitting such matter to pass downward and clog the trap, and it also effectually prevents the occasional disappearance and loss of jewelry and other valuables and the described plug is so designed that it 'may be instantly slipped into or removed V of tools.
from Waste opening of bowls, and bath tubs, without special fitting and Without the use Having thus described my invention, I claim The combination with a Wash bowl, and a substantially tubiilaf open bottoinpart on said bowl, of a substantially tubular out- Wvardly f flaring insertion body sustained within saiclrtubulai bottom arb, a rotatable 1Q post adjustably and axially lmmovably supported Within said insertion body and in parallel 7 relation; thereto, an aperture-0bsaid obstructing fin.
EDWIN M. HARKIVNS.
