Be it known thatI, LE RoY D'ANBYLEwIs, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, a citizen of the United StatesQhave invented a certain" new anduseful Method forUse in Baling'and TransportingCordwood;'and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art tOWl'ilCll it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved method for use in baling and transporting cord wood.
The. invention consists in the several features and in the construction, combination and arrangement of features as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provlde a methodwhereby the baling,handling and transporting of cord wood is facilitated.
- A further object is to provide a method for baling cord wood in such shape that it may be transported by rolling it bodily, fromthe forest or other place where it has been cutand sawed to the proper thickness and length, to any designated place desired.
A further object is to provide a method for forming cord wood into circularbales or bundles, preferably of the following sizes: Six feet four inches in diameter and four feetin length, containing one cord of wood; two feet in diameter and four feet in length, containing one half cord of wood; one foot in diameter and four feet in length contain} ing one quarter cord of wood; sixteen inches in diameter andfour feet in length containing one third of a cord of wood, or any place.
other size desired.
A further object is to provide a method for-eliminating the necessity ofloading cord wood onto trucks, wagons or other vehicles in order to transport the same from place to jacent cores;

an enlarged scale, of the ispring device used to retain the arms on the extreme outer. ends of the core;
the spring device used between the bales to retain the arms on-the finner. ends .of. two ad- Fig. 5 is a side view showing the bales arranged in tandem; and
Fig. 6 is a top plan view of Fig. 5. p In the drawings in which like reference characters denote like parts throughout the several views, 1 represents a plurality of sticks of cord wood, preferably four feet in length, which are formed into a cylindrical bale and held in place by a series of bale wires 2, the ends of each bale wire being secured together in any desired manner, and 3 is a core preferably made of wood, but which may be made of any other suitable material, placed lengthwise in the center of the plurality of sticks of cord wood in the bale. Each end of the core 3 is provided with a reduced portion 4 having an annular groove5, and 6 are arms each provided witha sleeve 7 having a spring pin 8 adapted to engage the annular groove 5 and thereby lock the arms to the core and prevent the lateral movement of the bales.
The arms 6 are each provided with a hook 9 to which a tractor or other motive power for transporting the bales may be secured. In order to space the arms 6 apart and keep them parallel, a tubularbar 9 is provided the opposite ends of which are bolted to the arms 6.
In Fig. 4 is shown an arm provided with 'a double set of spring pins 10 for engaging the grooves in the cores, whichis used be tween the bales, to connecttheinner ends of the cores. f
In Figs. 6 and 7 the bales are shown as arranged in tandem, the cores being connected together by means of a series of arms 11 each having a sleeve 12 with a spring pin toengage grooves in the core, and a hook 13 to engage the hookedend 14.01% the arm of the following bale. v
Although I have only shown two bales of cord wood arranged laterally side by side and three bales when arranged in tandem the number may be increased or diminished as desired.
In assembling the device the cord wood is formed into a round bale with the core insertedi l on e'itiitli'nally throngh the: middle portion thereof, the sleeves of the arms placed over the ends of the cores and locked by'means of the spring pins, when the 'bale is ready to be transported to the desired destination by rolling-the same." 7
' What I claim is r i The method of preparing cord wood for transportation consisting in forming the sticks of Wood into a substantially cylindrical" bale, insertinga core Within said bale and attaching means to said core for rolling the bale.
2. The method of preparing cord Wood for transportation, consisting in forming the sticks of Wood into a substantially cylin- V drical bale, tying the bale so formed together and attaching means; to said balefor rolling the same. Y 1 V 3. The method of preparing cord Wood for transportation, consisting in forming the sticks of wood into a substantially cylinfor rolling the bale to the said core.
4. The method of preparing cord Wood for transportation, consisting in forming drical bale, tying the same, inserting a core in the center of the bale and attaching means the sticks into a compact cylindrical bale, tylng the same, inserting a c'orein the cenc LE ROY DANBY LEWIS
