SQUARING-UP MACHINE WITH ELECTRIC MOTOR.
1,331,992. Applicationled February 7, 1917, Serial No. 147,142.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, JENs J'EsPEnsEN and ANDREAS JAKOBSEN, citizensv of the Kingdom of Denmark, and residents of ,Skjerin Denmark, have invented' certain new and useful Improvements in Squaring-Up Machines with Electric Motors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine for squaring up wood beams and the like by means of electric power, and having an electric motor mounted on the machine proper. This is attained by laying the beams on a suflicient number of horses according to their length in theknown way. On both sides of the beams rails are arranged in such a way that they may be raised or lowered in relation to the thickness of the timber and the sharp edge dimension required. The machine is placed on the track and it rests on four Wheels-so that it can be pulled forward and backward on thc track. Hitherto the dimension required has been obtained by lowering the rails according as the planing proceeds, but according to the present invention the rails are kept stationary while the plane can be moved vertically by means of a raising and lowering device as required, and the construction makes it possible only to square up the beams in right angles. The machine requires very little attention and the planing is done more precise and reliable than in machines hitherto known.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the invention. Figure 1 shows a side view and Fig. 2 a plan view of the machine.
The frame-1 carrying the bearings 2 and wheels 3 forms a wagon running on the rails 4c between which the beams to be squared up rest. The handles 5 by means of which the wagon is pulled forward and backward over'the timber are fastenedto the frame 1 by means of the arms G. The wagon carries an iron frame 7 the lower part of which is bent downward so as to bring the plane nearer to the timber. The frame 7 is movably connected with the frame 1 by means of the bearings 10 fastened to the frame 1, the shaft 9, and the bearings 8 fastened to the frame 7. On the lower part of the frame 7 the rotary cutter block 11 with the knives 12 are carried by a shaft 13. The cutter block 11 is put into rotation by means of two driving belts 15 running over the pulleys 14 and 16, the one 16 Specification of Letters'Patent.
v Renewed November 11, 1919. Serial No. 337,334.
' slidable on said screwrod. A hand wheel 25 having a screw-threaded hub engages the screwthreads of said screwrod and is adjustable upward and downward thereon. By turning the hand wheel in one direction the rear end of the tilting frame 7 is raised and the forward cutter carrying end is lowered. When the hand wheel is turned in the opposite direction the weight of the motor together with the working pressure from the cutter' causes the tilting frame to move downward, following the hand wheel, which serves as a rest or holder for said tilting frame. Screws 26 near the forward end of the frame of the carriage 1 engage the tilting frame 7 at points in front of the pivot of said frame and near the cutter carrying end thereof. These screws tend to prevent wabbling of the frame at the cutter end thereof.
Having now particularly described and Patented Feb. 24, 1920. A
ascertained the nature of our said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, we declare that what we claim is 1. An electric squaring-up machine for timbers comprising parallel rails forming a track, a carriage adapted to traverse said track, a tilting frame pivoted centrally of its length on transverse bearings of said carriage and having an angular dependent extension at its front end, a transverse rotary planer disposed at the forward end of said dependent extension, a motor mounted on said tilting frame, a screwrod hinged to the rear portion of said carriage, an eye block hinged to the rear portion of said tilting frame and slidable on said screwrod, and a threaded hand wheel adjustable on said screwrod and operative through said hinged eye block to tilt said frame and swing said planer into positions for squaring-up timbers disposed between the rails of said track.
2. An electric squaring-up machine for timbers comprising parallel rails forming a track, a carriage adapted to traverse said track, a tilting frame pivoted centrally of its length on transverse bearings of said carriage and having an angular dependent extension at its front end, a transverse rotary planer disposed at the forward end of said dependent extension, a motor mounted on said tilting frame, a screWrod hinged to the rear portion of said carriage, an eye block hinged to the rear portion of said tilting frame and slidable on said screwrod, a threaded hand Wheel adjustable on said screwrod and operative through said hinged eye block to tilt said frame and swing said planer into positions for squaring-up timbers disposed between the rails of said track,
and adjustable set screws disposed`v on op- 15 posite sides of the carriage frame near the front thereof and adapted to engage the tilting frame near the cutter end thereof and operative to prevent Wabbling of said frame at the cutter end thereof.
In testimony that We claim the foregoing as our invention, We have signed our names in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.`
