EDWARDDQ. PRIEST, OF SCHENECTADY, NE -7V YORK, ASSIGNORTO. GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF: NEW YORK. p
oovEn HIiven non ELECTRiCMACI-IINES.
Specification of Letters I 'atent. Patented Feb. 24, 1920.
Application filed December 17, 1917. Serial No. 207,516.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD D. PRIEST,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, county of Schenectady, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cover-Hinges for Electric Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cover-hinges for electric machines and particularly for such machines when used as motors for propelling vehicles.
It is usual to. mount such motors underneath the vehicle frame and inclose proximity thereto. The frames of such motors are provided with openings adjacent the commutators in orderthat access may be had to the interior of the motor for. inspecting and repairing the commutators, brushes and brush-holders. vided with covers for protecting the interior of the motors. My invention has for its object the provision of an improved coverhing'e of a novel andsimple construction, whereby with the cooperation of a latch at the opposite end the cover is securely held in position during the operation of the motor and whereby the cover may be readily removed upon the release of the latch, when the motor is not in operation, without raising it but a few inches. r
The various features of novelty which characterize my invention are pointed out with particularity in the claim annexed to and forming a part of this specification. For a better understanding of my invention, reference may be had to the following description taken in connection with the ac,- companying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of the frame of a railway motor provided with my invention; Fig. 2 is a view, similar to Fig. 1, with my cover partially released, and Fig. 3 is'a vlew with my cover entirely released.
Referring to the drawing, 1 is a portion of the frame of a railway motor,at the commutator end thereof, which is provided with an opening 2 through which. access may be had to the commutator, brushes and .brushholders (not shown). vided with a-metal cover 3. F astened tothe These. openings are pro-' This opening is proframe adjacent one end of the opening is an eye-bolt or a staple 4:.
F astened to the cover at apoint inwardly from the edge thereof is a resilient extension piece .5, bent back upon itself to form a hook, the opening 6 of the hook beingon the hook engages the staple 4 and thus forms with the staple, a hinge for the cover 3. The cover has a lip 7 extending'co'mpletely under side of the extension piece 5. The
about the cover and over the outside edge 8 I of the opening 2 so as to prevent the leakage of dust and water into the motor. A locking device is provided at'the end of the cover away from the extension piece 5, for firmly and tightly lockingsaid cover in'place. In
the particular arrangementshown, the locking, device comprises a spring member 9 fastened to the cover 3- and a lever 10 pivoted on the motor frame and having a link 11 pivoted to the lever 10. In the locked position the end 12 of the link engages'the end of the springmember 9, the lever being rotated into the position shown in Fig. 1.
By making the extension piece 5 and the member 9 of resilientmaterial, and by providing the cover with the lip 7, it will be securely locked in position with the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1, so that it cannot move during the operation of the motor.
In order to remove the cover, the lever 10 is rotated into the position shown in Fig. 2, thereby releasing the engagement between the link 11 and the member 9. The cover can now be tilted into the position shown in y ing or tilting it but a few inches, which is agreat advantage when the motor is mounted underneath a vehicle and in close proximity to the under side of the vehicle frame. I
WVhat-I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is,
The combination with a motor frame having an opening and a reniovable cover therefor, of 2L hinge for said cover comprising a $1011 staple fastened to said frame adjacent said opening, and a resilient extension piece fastened to said cover at a point inwardly from the edge of said cover and bent back lipon itself to .form a hook, the opening of said hook being on the underside of said exten piece, said hook being adapted vto engae said staple. r r
V n Witness whereof, have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of December, 1917.v
, EDWARD 1). PRIEST.
