EDWARD 0. S'IUIVIPF, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
PRINTING-PRESS.
T 0 oZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD O. STUMPF. a citizen of the United States, residing at L'os Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a printing press suitable for making a limited number of impressions, and adaptable to have the matter to be printed set up quickly.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a press suitable for use by those not skilled in the printing art, whereby on short notice printed matter may be produced. In addition to the broader feature of my in- \ention, there are certain details of design, whereby a simple, durable, strong structure, cheap to manufacture and easy to manipulate is obtained.
These objects will be more fully understood, as will also other objects and corre sponding accomplishments of my invention from the following detailed description of an embodiment thereof. For the purpose of this description, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in which: 7
Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section of a complete machine; Fig. 2 is an enlarged section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged elevation of the impression roll carriage and its associated mechanism.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, the press comprises a box-like frame A, in which is mounted a chase 13 containing type for making impressions. Spanning the top of the frame is an inking ribbon and mechanism for feeding the ribbon indicated by C. Slidingly mounted upon the top of the frame and over the ribbon is a carriage carrying an impression roll, the carriage being indicated by D. A sheet of paper or card E to be printed upon is mounted upon the ribbon, and the carriage moved thereover pressing the paper, ribbon and type into contact.
The frame A has mounted therein a drawer 4: suitable for containing type to be set up, paper and any other accessories or supplies. Extending along the sides of the frame and secured thereto are cleats 5 and 6. A glass bed 7 is supported upon the cleats.
Resting upon the glass bed is the chase B, which is of the form commonly used by Specification of Letters Patent.

printers with the exception that it has a bottom 8. The type 9 are locked in the chase in the usual manner. Side members 10 and 11 securely hold the chase against any side or lateral movement.
Supported in brackets at one end of the frame is a roller 12 for feeding the inking ribbon. At the other end of the frame is a roller for receiving the ribbon. This roller has a ratchet wheel 1% for rotating the same, and a pawl 15 cooperating therewith. Pawl 15 is operated by a lever 16'pivoted to the frame and connected by a link 17 to a lever 18. Lever 18 is pivoted at its lower end as indicated by 19 to the frame A. its upper end having a head 20 arranged to be on gaged by the carriage D in its movement. As carriage D is moved to the end of its travel toward roller 12- it engages the head 20, and thereby motion is transmitted to pawl 15 so as to move the ratchet wheel 14 and its roller. A spring or any other suitable means may be provided for moving the pawl and its linkage back to its normal position.
The carriage comprises side frames 20 and 21. Each side frame is supported by a pair of wheels, the wheels on frame 20 being indicated by 22 and 23. The wheels ride upon tracks 24 and 25 mounted upon the sides of the frame. Arms, one being indicated by 26 extend downwardly from each frame, and journaled thereon are rollers, one being indicated by 27. Roller 27 rides beneath a track 28 secured to the side of the frame. The side frames are connected by tie members 29 and 30. Mounted in openings in the side frames are adjustable bearings. One is inclicated by 31 and has an opening 32 eccentric thereof in which is journaled the end of a shaft 33. The bearing is locked in position by a set-screw 34. The shaft 33 carries an impression roll 35. Roll 35 is positively rotated by means of a sprocket wheel 36 engaging a chain 37 strung between the ends of the frame. Chain 37 is held against the sprocket nheel by means of'a guide piece 38 shown in Fig. 3. The position of roll 35 so as to accommodate it to different thicknesses of paper and ribbon is adjusted by means of the bearings. always in contact with the sprocket 36 and is in no way interfered with by reason of the adjustment. A handle for moving the carriage is indicated by 39.
The type are set in the form and locked.
The chain 37 is and the like are printed, and the machine is especially adapted for use with linotype.
The position of roll is adjusted to accommodate it to the thickness of paper or card board to be printed upon. The paper or cardboard is then placed in position over the type as shown in Fig. l, the carriage being at either end of the frame. The carriage is now moved over the cardboard forcing the latter against the ribbon and against the type, thereby making the impression desired. T he printed matter is then removed and another sheet placed in position. The carriage is now moved back making another impression. By positively ro ating the inipression roll, the latter rolls when it strikes the top ofthe type instead of sliding and thereby blurring the impressions made.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, a
frame havin a bed t Y e su )orted on said 2. In a device ofthe class described, a
frame having a bed, type supported on said i prising an impression roll adj ustably mounted thereon, a sprocket wheel for rotating said roll, and a sprocket chain with which said chain is engaged spanning said 4. In a device of the class described, aframe having a bed, type supported'on said bed,{,an inking ribbon d sposed, over said type, means for-feeding said ribbon, a carriage slidable over said frame, said carriage comprising bearings eccentrically mounted therein, an impression roll adjustably journaled in said bearings, a sprocket wheel for rotating said wheel, and*a sprocket chain with Which said wheel is engaged spanning said frame.
In witness that I claim theforegoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 29th day of April, 1919.
V EDWARD'O, STUMPF.
