Description
C. SULZNER.
CLASP. APPLICATION HLD APR.10, 1911.
Patented Feb. 17, '1920.
' UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES SULVZNER, 0F AUDUBON, NEW JERSEY.
CLASP.
Applicationfled April 10, 1917.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs SULZNER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Audubon, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented Vcertain new and useful Improvements in Clasps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clasps and has more particular reference to an improved type of pivoted clasp.
The invention has for its dominant object l to provide a pivoted clasp for securing the free ends of bands, fabrics or tapes in a manner such as to positively prevent accidental or undue disengagement of the same therefrom resulting from direct or indirect pulling, pushing` or lifting of the band, etc.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a clasp which is entirely independent of the material or object engaged thereby, thus allowing the clasp to be easily and quickly removed to permit use thereof in conjunction with other material or objects.
Among other aims and objects of the invention may be recited, the provision of a clasp of the character mentioned with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production small, and efficiency and operation high.
Other and further improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of parts will be appreciated from the description to follow. which for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is shown for the purpose of illustration.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a top plan of my improved pivoted clasp; and
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now more specifically to the several figures of the said drawings, it is to be noted that I have shown, in the present embodiment, my improved clasp as being particularly adapted for use in connection with circular garters whereby the free ends of the material may be securely united although, it is to be understood that the invention is Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 17, 1920.
Serial No. 160,954.
not limited to this field. There is provided a curved base plate 5 formed, preferably, of sheet metal or other like material whose opposite side edges are provided with integral upstanding apertured bearing lugs 6, whe-reby the lock or lever of t-he clasp, which will be subsequently described, may be properly supported therebetween. A plurality of transversely disposed projections 10 are struck upwardly from the base plate 5 and are of a height sufiicient to permit the same to penetrate or partially penetrate the superposed opposite ends of the garter material designated G.
A lever 7 having a downwardly extending lip portion 8 formed thereon is pivotally mounted between the apertured bearing lugs 6, through the medium of oppositely disposed lugs 9, formed thereon and passing through the said bearing lugs 6. To facilitate engagement with the free extremity of the lever 7, an upwardly curved thumb piece 1G is formed thereupon, while to rigidify the same throughout its length a concavo-convex portion 17 is stamped therein and if desired, may have suitable ornamental matter applied or engraved upon the eX- posed face thereof. To insure positive engagement of the lip portion 8 of the lever with the garter material, the lower edge thereof is serrated as at 13 and, obviously, when moved into engagement with the garter material will engage the same in a manner to prevent accidental moving of the lever to releasing position.
It may be here noted, that the transversely disposed projections formed upon the base plate 5 are arranged in proximity of the serrated portion of the binding lip 8 and as a consequence, when the said binding lip is moved into engagement with the garter material, the free ends of the same will be' positively impinged upon, about and betwixt the said teeth. Hence, such pulling, pushing or lifting of the material as may occur during the use of the same will be prevented from forcing the lever 7 to open or releasing position or the disengaging of the ends of the material from the teeth 10.
Should for any reason, the lever 7 be accidentally moved to its open or releasing position, it is manifest that the free ends of the garter material by being affixed upon, about and betwixt the transversely disposed projections 10 would prevent separating of the overlapping ends of the same.
As hereinbefore indicated, I do not wish to be understood as confining the invention to the particular embodiment chosenfor illustration, herein, nor` to the exact construction, arrangement and adaptation of the parts shown and described, but I reserve the right to make any changes and alterations that fairly fall within the' spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:
YA clasp including a base'platehavingportions struck upwardly from the' base plate to form prongs arranged in spaced transverse alinement and adjacent the central portion l5 thereof, a lever pivotally connected with the base midway the length thereof and having its free end extending past one end of the base plate when in lockingv position, a flange on the pivoted end portion extending toward the plate and adapted when in locking position to moveithe fabricabout and into engagement with the upstruck portions or prongs, and said lever having a centrally located convexed portion formed therein between the pivoted and free ends toreinforce and increase the rigidity of the same for the purpose set forth.-
' In testimony whereof, I aHiX my signature hereto. v Y
