2 SHEETS-SHEET 2- Witnemas Wank NELLIE N. HILL, OF MOULTRIE, GEORGIA.
CIGAR-LIGHTER.
Application filed August 28, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, NELLIE N. HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moultrie, in the county of Colquitt, State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Lighters; and I 'do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such-as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to electric igniting devices. and has special reference to that type of igniting device particularly designed for the lighting of cigarettes or the like although it may also be employed'for other purposes.
One important object of the invention is to improve the general construct-ion of devices of this character.
A second important object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of cigar lighter wherein the current used to produce the electric spark will only be used at the time of making the spark so that thereby current consumption is reduced and the length of life of the batteries used prolonged.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and specifically claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of an electric lighter constructed in accordance with the invention,
. 2 is a front elevation thereof,
Fig. 3 is a. top plan view,
t is a vertical section with the parts in the position assumed when the device is ignited,
ig. 5 is a fragmental bottom plan view, ig. 6 is a detail elevation of the switch m ianism, and
7 is a further detail of the switch taken at "tight angles to Fig. 6.
in carrying out the objects of this invention there is provided a base 10 which is preferably of hard wood or other insulating material and mounted on this base 10 is a standard 11 which has a forwardly extending portion 12 provided on its underside with a hood 11. Pivoted to the forwardly ex- Specification of Letters'Patent.
Patented Feb. 17, 1920.
Serial No; 188,597.
tending portion is a sparkingterminal 13 which is normally held-with its lower end adjacent the hood by means of a spring let.
Mounted on the base 10 are supports 15 between which is pivoted a cylindrical receptacle or reservoir 16 having a filling opening 1?. Extending upward from this reservoir is a wick tube 18 wherein is a wick 19, the wick tube being provided at its upper end with a sparking terminal 20 which is adapted to momentarily engage the pivoted sparking terminal 13 as the reservoir is rocked on its pivot. For the pur pose of rocking the reservoir on its pivot a finger piece or arm 21 is provided.
Partially inclosing the upper end of the wicktube 18 is a shield 22 which serves to protect the flame from wind and drafts which would otherwiseextinguish the same, the shield at its upper edge being cut away as indicated at 22 so that the end of a cigarette, cigar or the like may be readily introduced into the flame.
Now, if a suitable electric current be passed between the sparking terminals at the time they are in contact and these terminals are then separated, a spark will pass at the instant of separation between the two terminals which will light the wick in the wick tube, )rovided the same be saturated with the usual burning fluid such as alcohol, gasolene or the like.
In the base is provided a slot 23 and through this slot extends an arm 2% which is connected to the receptacle and which carries on its lower end a finger projecting laterally from the arm. T his finger 25 has its opposite edge faces beveled oppositely as indicated at 27, 28 and said beveled port-ions are adapted respectively to alternately engage and ride over the upper and lower faces of a spring contact 26. This contact member 26 consists of a resilient plate fixed at one end to the insulating base 10 and having its other end free and extending transversely of the slot 23. The free end of contact plate 28 is given a quarter turn to provide upper and lower slanting faces with which the respective beveled faces 27 and 28 alternately contact when the terminals 13 and 20 are in engagement.
With this spring contact is connected one end of the primary circuit 29 of an induction coil having its other end connected with the arm 24. With the support is connected one end of the secondary circuit 31 of the induction coil, the other end of which secondary circuit is connected to the arm 24. The spring contact is so positioned and arranged that the finger contacts therewith just at the time when the contact is broken between the sparking terminals and thus the current is only used at the instant of breaking the spark.
There has thus been provided a simple and efiicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention Without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
What is claimed is:
A cigar lighter comprising a base having an opening therein and supports at opposite 7 sides thereof, a reservoir pivoted to the supports and having an upwardly directed wick tube communicated therewith and provided wvith an electric terminal, a resilient plate fixed at one end to the base and having its other end free and extending transversely of the slot and deflected torsionally, an arm depending from the reservoir and having a contact disposed to engage opposite faces of the free end portion of the plate alternately when the reservoir is pivotally moved, a standard upon the base provided with an electric terminal disposed for contact by the terminal of the wick tube during a part of the time of mutual engagement of said electric contacts of the reservoir arm and the base and means for holding the reservoir yieldably with the contacts out of mutual engagement, the standard and arm being adapted for inclusion in the secondary of an induction coil and the arm and the contact of the base being adz pted to be included in the primary circuit of said induction coil In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
