SHOULDER-STRAP.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HORACE STANLEY MARKS, a citizen of the Commonwealth of Australia, and resident of 62 Swanston street, Melbourne, in the State of Victoria and said Commonwealth, have invented new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Shoulder-Straps, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to improvements in shoulder straps, and has been specially devised in order to overcome certain defects in existing straps.

The shoulder straps at present in use are open to the objection that owing to the straps passing under the arm pit of the wearer, chafing is caused with consequent pain and inconvenience.

According to this invention, no chafing occurs, the straps being so arranged that pressure is imparted to the figure from the rear and the top of the shoulder blades without causing any restriction or inconvenience in movement.

An essential feature of this invention consists in passing the pressure or tightening straps from the waist band and approximately from the center of the side up over the shoulder on that side and crossing the straps at the center of the back, the ends of the respective straps being adjustable in a buckle arranged on the opposite side of the waist band from the point where the strap is permanently fixed thereto.

In order that the invention may be more readily understood it will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawin s.

According to this invention a waist band 1 of sufiicient width is provided, the ends being buttoned, laced or otherwise. adjustably and (or) detachably fastened as at 2, the ends immediately inside the fastening means, if necessary, being reinforced by whale bone or other busks.

At approximately the center side positions of the waist band, a strap 6 of webbing or other material of the required length is sewn, as at 7, and at about the center of the back as above described connects a back supporting strap or band 8, while from t e outer edge of each rear back supporting band a fastening strap 9 of webbing or other material is fitted.

vertically up over the shoulder at that side of the person, then diagonally over the back, the respective straps 6 or the extensions 9 passing to the opposite side where they are adjustably fastened to the buckles 10 on the waist band 1, it being obvious that the pressure of the straps can be readily adjusted as required bythe tightening or release of the straps 9 upon the waist band buckles 10, the pressure being exerted upon the shoulder blades direct from the rear so straightening the figure as required.

It will be readily understood that the shoulder straps arranged in the manner above described can readily be fitted to corsets or articlesof wearing apparel capable of giving the necessary support without departing from the scope of the invention, the essential element of which is the particular arrangement of the straps whereby pressure is exerted upon the figure from the rear and the top of the shoulder blades.

hat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In shoulder straps, the combination of a belt adjustable by a fastening; straps to exert pressure from the rear and top of the shoulder blades of the wearer, said straps being affixed to the belt at a point approximately above the hips of the wearer and eX- tending upwardly, over the shoulders of the wearer from front to back, and crossing each other at the center of the back of the wearer, and extending forwardly to approximately the point where the opposite strap is affixed to the belt; and means for adjustably fastening the straps to the belt at these points.
