Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented. Feb. 3, 1920.
Application filed March 29, 1919. Serial No. 286,019.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID L. RAND, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Ayr, inthe county of vCass and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ABook-Holders, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to book holders and has for its object the provision of a comparatively simple and thoroughly efficient devicel of this character by means of which a book or pamphlet may be conveniently held in open position when reading or copying therefrom.
A further object 'of the invention is to provide a book holder or support including a back plate having a marginal ange spaced from the front thereof to form an intermediate pocket for the reception of a book,
there being a bail pivotally `connected with said back plate whereby the holder may be tilted so as to support the book at any desired angle or inclination.
A further object` `s to provide a book holder constructed from a single sheet of metal, the upper edge of which is rolled into cylindrical form to produce a socket or keeper for the adjacent ends of the supporting bail, there being incisions formed in the metal at the opposite ends of the keeper and the metal at such incisions being bent laterally to produce stop ears or lugs for limiting the tilting movement fof the supporting bail.
A still further. object of the'invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency.
Figure `1 is a perspective view of a book holder constructed in accordance with the cated in all the views of the drawings byV the same reference characters.
The improved book holder forming the subject-matter of the present invention is preferably constructed from'a single sheet of metal of the general contour shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings and comprises a back plate 5 having its lower' longitudinal edge bent upwardly to form will possess suflicient resiliency to aretaining'iian'ge 6l and its opposite ends bent inwardly to form transverse retaining lianges 7 and 8. The flanges 6,7 and 8 are spaced laterally from the front lof the back plate to forman intermediate pocket 9 for rthe reception of avbook orA pamphlet, indicated at 10, said flanges by engagement with the leaves of the book serving to hold the book infopen position when reading or copying therefrom. The metal of which the holder is formed Vis .preferablycut away at the lower corners of the blank, as indicated at 11, so that when the flanges 7 and 8 are folded. inwardly the metal at the corners of said flanges will be spaced slightly from the adjacent ends of the .longitudinal flange 6.
By making the iianges in this manner they clamp the book in position'on the back plate and prevent accidental turning of the leaves. The upper ends of the end flanges 7 and 8 are preferably inclined downwardly at 12 and spaced inwardly from the upper edge of the back plate so asy to permit the ready insertion and removal of the book from the pocket 9. The upper edge of the metal of which the back plate is formed is preferably rolled into cylindrical form, as indicated at 13, to produce a tubular socket 14 adapted to receive the fadfacent ends of a supporting bail 15. 4The supporting bail 15 is preferably formed of a single length of wire,l the ends of which are inserted in the adjacent ends of the tubular socket 14, said bail serving to support the holder in upright posi-- tion on av desk, table or the like.
Suitable kerfs or incisions 16 are formed in the metal at the opposite ends of the tubular member 13 and the metal at said incisions bent laterally to form stop ears or lugs 17 which serve to limit the outward pivotal movement of the supporting bail 15. By bending the ears or lugs 17 outwardly the inclination of the supporting bail 15 may be varied at'will so as to support the book at any desired angle or inclination. The metal after the ears or lugs 17 are formed'is bent inwardly at 18 in Contact with the rear surface of the back plate 5 so as to form in effect a closure or lock which prevents withdrawal of the ends of the bail from within the socket 14.
It will thus be seen that the flanges 6, 7 and 8 by engagement with the leaves of the book or pamphlet serve to hold the book in open positionso that said book may be consoy or otherwise disarranged when in use.
veniently supported on a desk, table orthe like when reading or copying therefrom without Vthe necessity of the user manually the leaves lof theV book will retain said book in osition on the/back plate. Y Y
llt) will, of course, be understood that the holders maybe made in different sizes and shapes Vand nickeled, gilded or otherwise finished to give them a neat attractive appearance. y Having thus described is claimed as-new is: Y LA'book holder comprising a substantially lrectangular' l'back plate having its lower longitudinal edge and its end walls Vbent, inwardly and spaced from said back plate to form pocket for the reception yor a ibook, the metal at the' upper longitudinal` edge ofthe back plate being bent the invention7 what to produce a socket, there being incisions formed inthe metal at the opposite ends Vbackplate, and a supporting bail having its endsfseated within the socket, said lugs by yengagement with the-'bail servingto llimitthe pivotal movement thereof.
Y 2Q A book holder comprising a substanl tially'rectangular blank having its corners out away and its lower longitudinal' edge and end'walls bent inwardly in'spaced relation to the blank to form a pocket-for-the edge of the blank being provided with spaced incisions-and the metal between said Y incisions rolled into substantially cylindrir` cal form at the rearffaceof the-*blank to i'orm a socket, the metal betweenV the incic sions andthe adj acentl ends ofthe "blank being bent laterally to form stop lugs and `thence vbent inwardly in contact with the blank to form. closures for the socket, anda supporting bail having its ends insertediin the. socket and pivotally connected there-v with7 said lugs by engagement with 'the` bail serving Ato limit thel "pivotal 4movement thereof. -V Y i .In testimony whereof 1 aliix my signature.V
