To all whom it may concern:
S. F ITZ- Be it known that'I, WVILLIAM GERALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sand-Cutters, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to sand cutting machines for foundry use.

I In the preparation of sand in foundries for use in molding, it is necessary to work the'sand. and mix it b means of shovels or like implements, whic are used to toss the sand in such a way as to insure a thorough working and mixing thereof, whereby it is left in the desired tempered and homogeneous condition. 7
The object of my invention is to provlde means for working and mixing the sand that will be simple. and strong in construction and efiicient in operation.
Another object is to provide sand mixing means which shall be made up of a minimum number of operative parts and will perform its sand mixing operation in a manner simulating very nearly the hand mixing.-
With the above objects in view my lnvention is embodied in a construction inwhich a plurality of sand mixing elements, such as shovels, are arranged at an angle to the line of draft, and are operated in such a manner that as the machine is propelled across the floor of the foundry, thesand will be thrown at an angle to. the. line of draft, and left in the form of a ridge.
In the construction illustrated in theaccompanying drawings a plurality of sets of sand mixing elements or shovels has been illustrated, these sets being arranged at an angle with relation to each other and to the line of draft, and being operated in such a manner that one set will throw the sand in a direction at an angle to that of the other set, thereby attaining the desired end.

The frame of mymachine is substantially rectangular in shape and is made up of horizontally disposed side members 10 and 11 connected at their front ends by a cross mem- The members 10 and 11 are also intermediate their ends with vertically 'extending members 13, 13 and 14, which'in turn are connected, at their upper ends by longitudinally extending members 15 and 16 andv by front and rear members 17 and 18.v Members '15 and 16 are connected intermediate their front and rear ends by cross members 19' and 20, and vertical members 13 and 14 are connected intermediate their upper and lower ends by longitudinally extending members 21 and 22. In addition to the cross members above described, a further cross member 29 is secured to the lonextending side members 21 disposed at t 0 ends of said member 29 and is secured intermediate its ends by a brace 30 to the upper front cross member'17.
The frame work above described is carried by supporting wheels, the front wheels 23 being 'journaled on a shaft 24 which is carried by brackets 25 secured to the longitudinal frame members 10 and 11. The rear wheels 26 are 'mounted on stub shafts 27 which are carried by bracket members 28 Y secured to the rear ends of the longitudinally extending side members 10 and 11. From the above description it will be seen that the frame is substantially box shaped and is of skeleton construction, the frame members being preferably formed of angle 1ron.
The sand mixing elements will now be described.
In the embodiment of the machine illustrated in the drawings, the sand is mixed by means of a series of shove-ls 31 which are manipulated by means of crank arms and crank shafts hereinafter described. The
shovels 31 are provided with shanks 32 which extend through and are secured to blocks 33 rota-tably mounted on the crank arms 34 formed on the crank shafts 35. As illustrated, the shanks 32 are adjustable in the blocks 33 by means of set screws 36 whereby their height may be regulated.

A sand cutting machine including, in combination, a plurality of oppositely disposed angularly arranged sets of sand cut ting elements, means including a series of crank arms for giving said elements an orbital movement in a direction to deposit the sand in a central ridge.

A sand cutting machine including, in combination, a frame, a plurality of crank shafts carried by said frame and disposed at s an angle with respect to each other, crank arms carried by said crank shafts, the crank arms on one of said shafts being disposed at an angle with respect to the crank arms on the shaft arranged at an angle with respect thereto, sand cutting elements operatively carried by said crank arms, and means inandmeans including said shafts for giving said shovels an abrupt downward movement into a mass of sand, and a gradual rearward and upward movement whereby said shovels will deposit the sand in a central ridge.
