T0 aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that 1, MAX Mnniim, a citizen of Russia and resident of the borough of the Bronx, county of the Bronx, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons and Methods of Making the Same, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in buttons and methods of making the same and moreparticularly the invention contemplates buttons of the type known as rimmed buttons presenting in appearance a button having a central. portion and a rim portion surrounding the same.
According to my improvements, 1 propose to provide a button of this character having a central button portion covered with cloth and a rim portion surrounding the same, and if desired also covered with cloth preferably of a different kind, the but ton lending itself in this respect particularly well to garments which are made froi'n two different materials, the button being covered with the same materials. It is an object of the invention to enable the manufacture of such buttons in a simple and economical manner and to provide a substantially neater button than has heretofore been produced and a structurally improved button.
With these and other objects in. view, an. embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings and this em bodiment will be hereinafter more fully described with reference thereto and the invention will be finally pointed out in the claims.

According to the drawings the rim-frame 20 shown in Figs. 2 and3 is in the form of a circular ring, the peripheral portion 21 of which is cylindrical while the inner portion is inclined downwardly but is of'substantially less depth than the portion 21, the upper surface of the frame being rounded to produce, as will hereinafter appear, the con tour of the covered rim when completed. It will therefore be understood that this shape may be varied as desired, that is, it may be flat and provided with sharp corners in which case the rim, portion of the button will have this shape.
The rim-back portion 23 is of smaller diameter than the rim portion 20, the upstanding peripheral portion 24.- being such that it will fit into the recess formed by the under side of the rim 20. The central portion of the rim-back is raised as at 25, providing at the under side of the same a dished portion or recess which is provided centrally with an aperture or perforation 26, said recessed portion annularly surrounding the said aperture.
The piece of material 27 to cover the rim. which is shown in 1, is unperforated and is of such greater diameter than the rim that it may be placed over the same and have its edges brought down along the peripheral portion 21 and beneath the rim. The rim-back is thereupon pressed into place at the under side of the rim frame forcing the marginal portion of the material into the recess at the under side of the frame as clearly shown in Fig. 7 and stretching the material across the rim fran'ie substantially tight. The peripheral portion 21 is thereupon clenched in the usual manner by button making dies or other suitable machine means over the rim-back as shown at 21*, Fig. 8, thereby securing the parts together and securing the cloth so that it covers the rim. The cloth is then perforated centrally as at 28, the perforation being in register with the perforation 26 of the rim-back. It is important that the cloth be perforated at this time, rather than before assembling of the parts as the same may thereby be accurately positioned and will not be stretched out of shape as would be the case if the perforation were made previous to the assembling of the parts. I may also if desired however, cut the perforation 28 the same time as cutting the cloth, this being preferably done by means of a single cutting die. The covered rims and backs may furthermore be furnished in their covered state before securing the button portion thereto and kept in stock in this manner unperforated so that there is no danger of the perforation becoming stretched and the material raveling. When the covered rim is to be used in connection with the button port-ion, the cloth should be perforated as shown in Fig. 9, whereupon the button portion may be secured thereto as will presently be described.
Referring to Figs. 12 and 13, the button portion comprises a convex shell 30 having a downwardly extending rim portion 31 and over which the cloth covering 32 is placed and held thereon by a back portion 33 inserted into the under side of the shell and secured by clenching the portion 31 of the shell over the sides of the back portion 38 in the usual manner by button making dies or other suitable machine means. The portion 33 is provided with a plurality of downwardly extending prongs 34 struck from the same material from which the back is made, these prongs being preferably four in number and pointed. A tuft 35 is disposed within the button portion and projects through. the central opening within the prongs. The prongs as it is clear from Fig. 12, form upon the button a substantially cylindrical shaped shank which is inserted through the perforations 28 and 26 of the cloth covering 27 and the rim-back 26, the button portion being pressed down tightly upon the cloth covering 27 thereby stretching the shape as is shown in Fig. 1e and by spreading out the prongs 34: into the dished portion of the rim-back the button portion is secured in place, the dished portion 25 receiving the prongs in such manner that they are substantially flush with the under side of the rin'i-back so that the back of the finished button presents a substantially smooth surface free from projections, which might be caught into the material of the garment upon which the button is placed.
Vihile I have shown an improved type of tufted button for use in connection with the covered rim and back it will be understood that an uncovered or other type of button may be used as well, and the same may be of any desired. shape. It may, if desired, be provided with pins or staples adapted to be passed through the cloth 27 and aperture 26 through the material to which the button is to be attached, and upset at the under side thereof. t ma 7 also have sewing holes'in which case the sewing thread, will pass through the cloth 27 of the rim-back to the material to which the button is to be attached, and for this purpose the cloth 27 is preferably not provided with the hole 28. The rim-frame and rim-back, as also the shell and back of the tufted button portion, it will be understood, are preferably formed of thin sheet metal stamped into shape and the parts are adapted to be assembled by means of button making machines of the usual type.
T have illustrated and described preferred and satisfactory embodiments of my invention but it is obvious that changes may be llltttle therein within the spirit and scope thereof as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a button, a rim portion provided with a covering and perforated centrally, a central button portion disposed at the upper side of said rim portion of smaller diameter than said rim portion, and means on said button portion engaging the perforation of said rim portion adapted to secure said button portion to said rim portion independently of the securing of said cover ing to said rim portion.
2. In a button, a rim portion provided with a covering and perforated centrally, a central button portion disposed at the upper side of said rim portion of smaller diameter than said rim portion, means on said button portion engaging the perforation of said rim portion adapted to secure said button portion to said rim portion independently of the securing of said covering to said rim portion, and means independent of saidsecuring means'for attaching said button to a garment or the like.
3. In a button, a rim-frame, covering for said rim-frame extending over the same and having its edges folded beneath the same, a centrally perforated back portion engaged with said rim-frame and securing said covering in place, said rintframe being permanently clenched upon said back portion, said covering being stretched tight across the space Within said rim-frame extending at its ends between said rim-frame and said back portion, and secured at its ends by clenching of said rim-frame.

In a button, a rim-frame, covering for said rim-frame extending over the same and having its edges folded beneath the same, a centrally perforated back portion engaged with said rim-fraine and securing said covering in place, said rim-frame being permanently clenched upon said back por tion, said covering extending over the space Within said rim-frame, a central button portion disposed at the upper side of said rimframe and back portion of smaller diameter than said rim-frame and back portion, and means on said button portion extending through said covering and through said perforation of said back portion, and adapted to secure said button portion to said rim-frame and back portion independently of the securing ofsaid rim-frame to said back portion.
5. In a button, a rim-frame, covering for said rim-frame extending over the same and having its edges folded beneath the same, a centrally perforated back portion engaged with said rim-frame and having an annular recess surrounding the said perforation at its under side, said rim-frame being permanently clenched upon said back portion and securing said covering in place a central button portion disposed at the upper side of said rinrframe and back portion of smaller diameter than said rimframe and back portion, and a shank on said central button portion extending through said cover and through said perforation of said back portion and provided with prongs upset upon said back portion and disposed Within said annular recess ofsaid back portion and adapted to secure said button portion to said rim-frame and back portion independently of the securing of said back portion to said lllllrfl'itllle.
6. In a button, a rim-frame, covering for said rim-frame extending over the same and having its edges folded beneath the same, a centrally perforated back portion engaged 'ith said rim-frame and having an an nular recess surrounding the said perforation at its under side, said rim-frame being permanently clenched upon said back portion and securing said covering in place, a central button portion disposed at the upper side of said rim-frame and back portion of smaller diameter than said rimframe and back portion, and a shank on said central button portion extending through said cover and through said perforation of said back portion and provided .With prongs upset upon said back portion and disposed Within said annular recess of said back portion and adapted to secure said button portion to said rim-frame and back portion independently of the securing of said back portion to said rim-frame, and a tuft disposed within said button portion and projecting beyond the upset fronts of said shank and constituting means for securing said button to a garment or the like.
7. In a button, a rim-frame, covering for said rim-frame extending over the same and having its edges folded beneath the same, a centrally perforated back portion engaged with said rim-frame and having an annular recess surrounding said perforz, tion at its under side and an annular raised portion surrounding said opening at its inner side, said rim-fra1ne being permanently clenched upon said back portion and securing said covering in place, said covering extending across the space Within said rimframe above said annular raised portion of said back portion, and a central button portion disposed at the upper side of said rimframe and back portion of smaller diameter than said rim-frame and back portion, means on said button portion extending through said covering and through said perforation of said back portion and having portions thereof bent into said annular recess to secure said button portion to said rim-frame and back portion independently of the securing of said rinrframe to said back portion, said button portion adapted to be drawn with said covering into engagement with said annular raised portion of said back portion.
