MOSES JOHN MARKS, OF WARLEY, ENGLAND,
DEVICE FOR TURNING OVER SHEETS MUSIC.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb, 3, 1920.
Application filed May 14, 1919. Serial no; 297,028.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mosns JOHN MARKs, of No. 2 Bungalow, WVoodma-n Road, Warley, in the county of Essex, England, accountant, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Devices for Turning Over Sheets of Music, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for turning over sheets of music and especially to that type of device in which the arms employed for turning the leaves are mounted on a vertical spindle and held by a catch against the action of springs, the arms being released one by one by a horizontal shaft on which catches are arranged and adapted to release one arm, and to retain the rest.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved construction of catch and re taining device.
A catch and retaining device made in ac cordance with this invention comprises a rocking spindle mounted on a frame, a catch mounted on the rocking spindle and adapted to allow the arm to pass behind the catch, one of said arms bearing against the catch, a stop on said rocking spindle adapted to be rocked with the spindle so as to pass in front of the arm next behind the arm to be released, a stop on the rocking spindle adapted to bear against the frame to limit its movement in one direction, a spring adapted to return the spindle to its normal position, the arrangement being such that the rocking of the spindle simultaneously releases the arm bearing against the catch.
Referring to the drawings filed herewith:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a complete device made in accordance with this'invention with the arms set in the operative position.
Fig. 2 is a plan.
Fig. 3 is an elevation with the arms in the inoperative position.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the clip at the end of each arm.
Fig. 5 is an elevation of the catch at the end of each arm.
Fig. 6 is a plan of the catch.
Fig. 7 is an elevation of the stop and releasing device.
Fig. 8 is a sectional elevation of the catch, stop and releasing devices mounted in a frame.
Fig. 9 is a plan of an operating lever.
The music stand 2 is provided with clips 3 which are adapted to engage the usual bracket for supporting the music on an instrument or stand. Pivotally mounted on a vertical spindle 4 are four arms 5, 6, 7 and 8, each provided with a clip 9.
On the stand 2 is a frame. 10 on which is mounted a rocking spindle 11 one end of which. is bent back. at 12, and connected to a plate 13 rigidly mounted on the spindle 11 Loosely "mounted on the. spindle 11 is a catch 14; one end of a spring 15 mounted on a pin 16 is connected to the plate 13 and the other end. of the spring bears against the catch 14. The plate 13 has an arm-17 which bears against the catch 14.
On the frame 2 are four springs 18, each connected to one of the arms 5, 6, 7, 8, by a thread 19.
In operation as the arms 5, 6, 7, 8, are turned from the inoperative to the operative position they engage the point 20 of the catch 14 causing the catch to rock on the.
spindle 11, the spring 15 pushing the catch forward as each arm passes behind the catch. When the arms are in the operative position one bears against the point 20 of the catch and the rest lie one behind the other. The plate 13 is so disposed as to be just behind the clip of the arm that bears against the point 20.
The leaves of the music are placed in the clips 9; when it is desired to turn over the the plate 13. On releasing the lever 21 the next arm comes up against the point 20- and is now in a position to be released when pressure is placed on the lever 21. The bent end 12 of the spindle 11 is adapted to en gage a stop 23 formed in the frame 10.
In place of the lever 22 which is adapted to be operated by the hand, a longer lever such as 23 provided with a cup shaped end 24 may be attached to the spindle 11 by which the spindle may be rocked by blowing into the cup 24. The clip 9 may be formed with a leaf spring 25 on which may be disposed a rubber band 26 to better grip the music. A pin 27 is adapted for holding the leaves not to be turned over.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device for turning over the leaves of music, means for retaining and releasing the arms which turn the sheets comprising a rocking spindle mounted on a frame, a-
catch loosely mounted on the rocking spindle adapted to allow the arms to pass behind the catch Without rocking the spindle, one of said arms bearing against the catch, a stop on said rocking spindle adapted to be rocked With the spindle so as to pass in front of the arm next behind the arm to be released, a stop on the rocking spindle adapt ed to bear against the frame to limit its movement in one direction a spring adapted to return the spindle to its normal position the arrangement being such that the rocking of the spindle simultaneously releases the arm bearing against the catch.
2. A device for turning over the leaves of music comprising a stand, clips on the stand adapted to engage the usual bracket for supporting the music, a vertical spindle on said stand, arms pivotally mounted on said spindle, a frame mounted on the said stand, a horizontal spindle adapted to be rocked,
means for rocking the spindle, a plate rigidly mounted on said spindle, a catch loosely mounted on said spindle, a spring adapted to return the catch and the rocking spindle to their normal position, an arm on said plate adapted to engage the catch so that the catch is moved When the horizontal spindle is rocked, springs in tension connected to the frame and threads connected to said springs and to the said arms.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of tWo subscribing wltnesses.
