IMPROVEMENT IN HOLDING DEVICES FOR HEEL TRIMMING AND BURNISHING MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,957, dated November 12, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN It. FoLsoM, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Holding Device for Heel Trimming and Burnishing Machines, of which the following is a specification The Nature of the Intention.

This invention relates to an improved device for holding shoes while having the heel trimmed or burnished, and is more particularly adapted to the machine patented by Richard O. Lambert August 8, 1871; and consists in combining with the central spindle centering pieces and holding-cheeks, constructed in a manner best understood by reference to the drawing and specification.

Description of the Accompanying Drawing.

General Description.

- held firmly to the mandrel A at any'desired position. The rear part of the clasp has a screw, B, out upon it. Upon this screw the coned nut R works, the conical part of the nut R operating upon the levers E E, so that as the nut advances the checks N N are thrown inwardly so as to grasp the shoe F, centering and holding it in position. The mandrel A has an eccentric thimble, K, Figs. 1 and 4, attached as shown. This thimble has four sharp spurs, k k 70 70, Fig. 4, which, when the device is in operation, penetrate the inner sole of the shoe and assist-in holding it in position. The eccentricity of position of these spurs in relation to the mandrel A allows them to be adjusted to adapt the device to the heel of the shoe. The thimble L is loosely attached to the mandrel A, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to adapt itself more readily to the interior of the shoe, and may be substituted for the thimble K, in which case the mandrel A is to be turned end for end, so as to bring the thimble L between the cheeks N N. In case the heel is to be trimmed or burnished before the last is removed, then the thimble K may be removed and the end of the mandrel A be brought directly upon the last.

I claim as my invention- 1. In a machine for trimming and burnishing the heels of boots and shoes, the combination of the jaws or cheeks E N E N with the conical screw it and central mandrel A, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.

2. The eccentric thimble K, in combination with the mandrel A, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
