Be it known that I, GnovER PERRY, a citizen of .the United States of America, and resident of Chicago, Cook county,YY Illinois, have invented. certain new and useful Im.- -provements in Portable Bookcases, of which the following is a specification. Y

My invention relates in general to a portable book case and more specifically to a combined traveling case and book-rack'or standupon which books and other .materials may be mounted. .Y Y l Y Among the Aobjectsfof my invention are to provide a compact and easily handled portable case for use in carrying booksand one which, when opened, forms a stand or rack upon which the books are mounted and from which they need not be removed in order to openrand study the same. l My invention is especially adapted Vfor use by Sunday school teachers,` Christian Science teachers, or any others who mayde-l sire tofcarry a set of books and writing material while travelingand who may desire to consult theV books at frequent intervals andat times when a table or vstand is not accessible upon which to rest thesame.

Referring now to Fig. 1 I have shown the case Vin aclosed .or .carrying condition with the flaps all closed and fastened and showing a handle 2 which is firmly secured to the flap 3 by means of a pair of straps 4 and 5. The ap 3 is fastened by means of a pair of snap fasteners 6 and 7.

In Fig. 2 I have shown the case when opened out flat with the books open. In this figure it will be seen that the case when opened out forms a fiat strip of leather which is stitched at various points in order to form joints at which the case may readily be folded. front piece 8. has secured thereto a pair of pockets 9 and 10. These pockets are made preferably of one piece of leather or other material which is stitched down in such a manner, as to leavea `pairof openings one on each side ofthe frontv 8 into which the 65 front and backcovers respectivelyofa pair of books 14 and 15 may be inserted. A pair of. snap fasteners 16.and V17 are provided `in the flaps 12 and 13 7 5 so that, when the case is closed, the back plece 18 may .befirmly secured to the front piece by means of the snaps 16 and 17 and the coperating snaps 2O and 21.-v The books 14 and 15 are indicated by theheavily dotted 80 lines andshownin open position. The section 19 forms the'base or bottom-of the case andis ymade soas to Vfold onthe lines 22. The back piece 18 has apocketv23 on the left hand half thereof which is formed in thesame manner as the pockets 9 and 10, and a pairof pockets 24 and 25 on the right hand half thereof. ,The pocket 23 is the larger of the three and is adapted to have the `front cover of a Yquarterly or pamphlet inserted therein. The pocket 25 isof smaller size andmay beY usedto carry visitingror business cards. AThe pocket 24 is larger than the pocketA 25V and may be used for carrying memorandum paper or notes of any sort.

This .pocket 25 is provided witha Hap 26 for. inclosing the Yopening thereof, which may also be used to hold openfthewquarterly which is inserted in the pocket 23. Just above the pockets 23 and 24 I have provided 100 a small strip 27, attached to the piece 18 at two edges and having an opening or loop for carrying a pen or' pencil. Below the pencil holder 27 is attached a strap or cord 28 having a ring 29 attached to the lower 105 end thereof. This ring 29 is adapted to be fastened over a hook 30 on the front piece 8. This strap is for holding the back piece 18 in a raised position so that. as shown in Fig.

3 with the ring 29 over the hook 30, the piece 110 18 stands at an angle of about 125 from the piece 8 and therefore'holdS the quarterly in a position easily accessible while reading the books 14 and 15. In F ig. 3 the books 14 and 15 have been left out ofthe drawing so `that the pockets 9 and 10 and the flaps 12 and 13 may be more clearly seen. Although the carrying strap 2 is shown only in Fig. 1 it will be understood that this strap is located on the opposite side of the section 3 in Figs. 2 and 3. This case may be made of any suitable material preferably of morocco leather. The pockets may also be 'made `of any'desired material and in order to make the case stiffer and more easily handled each section such as the sections 3, 8, 1Q, 13, 18, etc., may be lined with leather and have a strip of case board or other stiffeniiig material slightly smaller than each 4section incased in said flining and beveledat the edges, leaving renough room at each ij'oint so that lthe -[laps may be folded easily.

It will be `seen therefore that I have invented a very useful and 'n'ovel book `case which is adapted for many uses, and which when open forms a 'very handy and `complete desk por stand for study while atoute and which when closed, folds up into 4a compact and eas-ily handled ease which is 'but a very little larger i'iisize Vthan the `actual contents thereof.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire 'to have protected by Letters Patent will be pointed out in the appended claims.

VVlia't I claiin as Amy `invention' is:

1. An article of manufacture, consisting of a plate with a pair of pockets facing in reverse directions, whereby a pair of books may be held in position one with one cover in one pocket `and the other with the opposite lcover inthe other pocket, and wings or flaps attached to the edges Vof said plate arranged to fold over the books while in position, to inclose them in a case like inclosure, means for latching said 4wings in position when folded, a pocket in one of said wingsv for receiving one side of the cover `of another boo-k, whereby such book may be held in position and whereby it may be lopened while so held, and another pocket in said wing having Va flap for holding said last mentioned book.

2. As an article of manufacture a combined traveling case and desk having receptacles for holding a plurality of books and writingmaterial, whereby when said case is opened it forms a rack or stand, on which bined traveling case and desk having receptacles for holding a plurality of books and writing material, whereby when said case is opened it forms a rack or stand, on which "said books may be opened without removing them froin said receptacles, means for closing, locking and carrying 'said case, said desk 'comprising a horizontal plate for holding a pair of books, another plate for holding another book in a raised position, interlocking flaps for maintaining said case in locked condition, and a flexible link for holding said 'last plate in raised position.

4. An article of manufacture consisting of a pair of plates, a plurality of pockets in each of "said plates for holding books and like material, the pockets in one of said plates being reversed one for holding the back cover of'one book and another for holding the front cover of vanother book, whereby said books 'may be opened without removing them from said pocket-s, lone of `the pockets in said other plate having an opening for holding the front cover of a book and another of the pockets having a iap for holding said last book open, means for `holding one of 'said plates in a raised position relative to the other plates land means for folding said plates to incluse said books and means comprising a plurality of aps and fasteners for locking said lates together to forin a Vcase and means lor carrying said case.
