0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
FILING CASE.
Application filed September 25-3, 1917.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN C. PARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Filing- Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is designed to provide filing cases in units adapted for coordination to afford a desired flexible assembly of units and to provide means for facilitating the insertion and withdrawal of drawers, cards, data sheets and the like. The improved 'unlt comprises a box or case formed from sheet material and having means whereby it may be interlocked with other similar units. Preferably such units are combined with drawers of greater length than the space into which they are inserted and means are provided for permitting the projecting part of any drawer to be grasped readily with out interference by adjacent drawers. But boxes or units may be provided with spacing means whereby drawers, cards or sheets wholly contained in such units can be grasped readily. the spacing means being adapted for stiffening the units as well as facilitating the manipulation of the matter contained thereby.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a plurality of assembled filing units embodying my improve ments, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of a unit taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
As shown in the drawings, my improvements comprise sheet metal boxes each having a bottom wall 1, side walls 2, an end wall 3, and a top wall 4, the top wall having projecting therefrom studs 5 adapted to engage in holes 6 in the bottom of a superposed box, whereby stacked boxes are held in registering relation.
Each unit is provided with vertical spacers and struts 7 and 8, one of which is adjacent to a side thereof and the other midway between the sides, and with longitudinal guides 9 extending rearwardly from the spacer 8 on the bottom, the studs and holes being in a vertical plane between The sides 2 may be provided with the respective recesses 2 the spacing struts 7 may be Specification of Letters Patent.
the guides.

provided with the respective recesses 7 and the spacing struts 8 may be provided with the respective recesses 8'.
By providing the recesses 2, 7 and 8, drawers 11 or stacked sheets 12, of no greater length than that of the spaces occupied, may be used conveniently, the thing housed being completely contained while provision is made by the recesses for conveniently grasping the drawers or stacked papers when fully incased.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In a filing device, the combination with a case having a recessed wall and a recessed spacer adjacent thereto, of a second case having a recessed wall in juxtaposed relation to said wall first named, the recesses of spacer and walls being in registration.
In a filing device, a plurality of superposed sectional units, each unit having an open end containing a spacer at a side thereof, an intermediate spacer, longitudinal guides extending rearwardly from said in termediate spacer, and locking means in a vertical plane passing through said intermediate spacer between said guides to maint ain the units in vertical alinement.
3, In a filing device, the combination of a plurality of open cases respectively provided with studs and sockets for engaging them together, interior strips between which said studs and sockets are disposed, and spacers disposed in the open ends of said case between aid strips.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my name this 18th day of Sept, 1917.
JOHN CLINTON PARKER.
