LIIETING-JACK.
Application filed June 9, 1919.
ful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lilting ]acks. One of the ob ects of this 1nvent1on resides in the provision of a lifting jack which is manually manipulated.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a lifting jack consisting of an embodiment of coacting elements whereby the leverage of the lifting lever can be varied according to the weight to be lifted.
A still further object of this invention resides in the provision of a lifting jack having means whereby the lifting lever can be locked to support the weight in elevated position.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of elements to be more particularly set forth in the specification herewith and pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that the right is reserved to resort to such changes in construction as come within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is aside view of a lifting jack as constructed in accordance with this invention showing the lifting lever in elevated position by dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a view thereof taken at right angles thereto with the lifting lever removed.
In the present embodiment of this invention, the numeral 5 designates a U-shaped hanger having the terminals 6 of its arms 7 secured together by a rivet 8 and held in spaced relation by a sleeve 9.
Loosely secured to the medial portion 10 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 27, 1920.
Serial No. 302,814.
of the hanger 5 is a hook 11 by which the hanger is suspended in operative position from a stationary object, not shown.
Pivotally supported by a bolt 12 which is passed through sets of alining apertures l3 in the arms 7 ot' the hanger is a lifting lever 14.
The aforesaid lifting lever let is of any suitable length and is provided with a multiplicity of apertures 15 whereby the same can be shifted in various positions so that the leverage on opposite sides of the bolt 2 can be altered. to suit the weightto be lifted.
'l he forward end or the lever is pro vided with a flexible element 16 herein shown in the .torm of a chain. In order to adj astably support the chain at the forward end of the lever, a U-shaped bolt 17 is fastened to the lever so that any particular link of the chain can be retained in locked position thereto.
Carried by the rivet 8 on the sleeve 9 is a flexible element 18 in the form of a hook 19 and ring 20. This flexible element is adapted to hold the handle in depressed position after the weight of the object to be lifted has been elevated.
With this invention fully set forth, it is manifest that a lifting jack is provided which is cheap to manufacture, readily op erable, and convenient to transport.
Having thus described this invention, what I claim is An article of the character described, the combination of a U-shaped hanger, a lever pivotally secured thereto, a hook loosely supporting said hanger, a flexible element carried by said lever, a rivet securing the free ends of the hanger together, a sleeve on said rivet, a ring on the sleeve, and a hook on said ring.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
' JOHN FLANAGAN.
