a citizen of the United States, residing at I Hopedale, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have mvented an Improvement in Filling-Replenishing Looms, of which the following (1650115151011,
in connection with the accompanying rawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to looms, and more particularly to looms of the filling replenishing type, wherein a fresh supply of filling is automatically furnished from time to time.
In looms of this eneral type, it is a common practice to replenish the filling prior to complete exhaustion of that in the active shuttle, and to make sure that the shuttle is in proper position for the replenishing operation, a shuttle feeler is emplo ed. The shuttle feeler is normally maintained in an inoperative position, and is moved into an operative position on call for filling replenishment to feel for the shuttle and operation of the replenishing mec anism, should it find the shuttle not properly boxed. When the filling is thus replenished prior to complete exhaustion, there remains extending from the cloth selvage adjacent the replenishing side of the loom, a filling end extending to the filling carrier or bobbin. In order to remove th1s end of filling extending from the cloth selvage, looms of the type indicated, have associated with the shuttle feeler a thread cutter or parter which is usually referred to as a feeler thread cutter. This thread cutter is usually mounted on the shuttle feeler, and, like the shuttle feeler is normally maintained in an inoperative or frontward position, and is moved with the shuttle feeler to its operative or rearward position on call for replenishment of filling. The thread cutter or parter usually parts the filling adjacent the shuttle box, and on the movement of the feeler and cutter to inoperative position, carries the end leadin from the cloth selvage, so that this en is presented to the temple thread cutter along the clothselvage, by which the end is parted or cut, and all danger of its being woven into the cloth is eliminated.
It sometimes happens that when the shuttle feelerand thread cutter are moved to revent operative position or rearwardly, the end' of the shuttle feeler or the parts of the thread cutter may'engage the side of the shuttle as it is passing or completing its picking movement. Should this contact of the feeler or the parts of the thread cutter and shuttle occur, there is danger of injury either to the feeler, the thread cutter or shutt e.
An important feature of the present invention, therefore, consists of means for retarding the movement of the shuttle feeler or the shuttle feeler and thread cutter from inoperative to operative position to permit the shuttle to escape contact thereby as it completes its picking movement. This retardation in the movement of the shuttle feeler or shuttle feeler and thread cutter from inoperative to operative position or rearwardly may be effected by slowing up this movement or by stopping it alto ether for a short period of time, the condition in either case serving to permit the shuttle to pass without contact by the feeler or thread cutter, and thereby avoid liability of injury to the parts.
In the present instance of the invention, this feature is carried into effect by stopping the rearward movement of the feeler or feeler and thread cutter to permit the shuttle to pass and releasing the feeler or feeler and thread cutter to further rearward move ment into operative position. This feature of the invention is broadly new, and applicant believes himself to be the first in the art to provide means for delaying or retarding the movement of the feeler or feeler thread cutter to operative position, and then releasing it, that it may move to full operative position after the shuttle has passed.
Other features and novel combination of parts will hereinafter be described in addition to those above pointed out, and then the invention in its true scope will be defined by the claims.

The loom frame for supporting t' e operating parts may be of usual construction comprising the uprights 1 and breast beam 2 on which is mounted the bracket 3 for supportin the hopper stand a forming part of the fil ing replenishing mechanism. The transferrer 5, only part'of which is shown, may be of usual construction andmounted on the shaft 6 for rocking movement thereon upon the bracket 7.
The downwardly extending arm 8 which is connected to the transferrer has pivotally attached thereto the dog 9, the end 10 of which is adapted to be engaged by a part on the lay when the dog 9 is in its raised or operative position.
Mounted for oscillating movement about the axis 11 (Fig. 1) is the shuttle feeler 12 which may be attached to or integrally formed with the hub 13. Extending laterally from the shuttle feeler 12 is an arm 14: which may be secured to the shuttle feeler as indicated in Fig. 1, by means of a bolt 15 or other appropriate means. The arm 14. carries the actuating member 16 provided with a slot into which extends a pin 17 connected to the dog 9, the construction being such that should the feeler be moved rearwardly or from inoperative to operativepovsition, the end 10 of the dog 9 will be lifted into position to be struck by a hunter on the lay to cause filling replenishment. The mechanism so far described is of well known character now employed in filling replenishing looms, and is further illustrated in the patent to Alfred E. Stafford, No. 991,626, dated February 9, 1909. The shuttle feeler 12 carries a filling thread cutter which, when the feeler is in its operative or rearward position, is caused to be actuated to cut the filling between the cloth selvage and shuttle, and to clamp the end thereof leading from the cloth selvage, so that when the shuttle feeler returns to its frontward or inoperative position, the thread cutter and clamp will carry the end of the filling with it and position the filling for the action of the temple thread cutter, as now common in this type of loom. The thread cutter may be of any usual type, such, for instance, as that shown in the Stafi'ord patent above mentioned, or of other form. In the present instance, the active member 18 of the cutter is pivotally connected at 19 to the shuttle feeler, and has a down-turned rearward end portion 20 provided with a pin 21 which, as the shuttle feeler and thread cutter are moved rearwardly to operative position, en-
gages an opening cam 22 supported by an arm 23 secured in a fixed position on the loom frame, as indicated in Fig. 1. The other member 24.- of the filling thread cutter or parter may be fixed relative to the shuttle feeler 12, and the parts may be arranged as usual in this class of devices to part or cut the filling between the cloth selvage and the shuttle, andv hold or camp the end leading from the cloth selvage.
When the filling thread cutter is of the clamp type, it is desirable that the clam end of the filling be moved laterally tower the cloth selvage as the cutter and clamp move frontwardly to inoperative position, in order to prevent breaking the thread, and hold it for the'action of the temple thread cutter. Therefore, the hub 13 heretofore described, is mounted for sliding movement on its axial support 11, and is given its movement in a longitudinal direction by means of'the cam bracket 25 (Fig. 1) which may be adjustably secured to the loom frame by a bolt 26. This structure which characterizes the diagonal movement of the illustrated form of feeler thread cutter, is of well known type, and fully understood by those skilled in the art.
Mounted in suitable brackets 27 supported by the loom frame is the change or rock shaft 28, which, on detection of substantial exhaustion of filling is rocked bya feeler mechanism, not necessary to illustrate or de-' scribe here, as such mechanisms are well known in this class of machine. Secured to the transverse or rock shaft 28 is an arm 29, the rearward end portion 30 of which overhes a pin or projection 31 extending laterally from the shuttle feeler. upon the arm 29 is a yielding member 32 having its fulcrum at 33 and normally under' the control of a spring 34 which acts to yieldingly hold the end 35 of the member 32 under the pin 31,- the construction being such that upon call for replenishment of filling, the rock or transverse shaft 28 will be rocked in the direction of the arrow Fig. 1), thereby lifting the arm 29 and causing the yieldingly mounted member 32 to act upon the in 31 and move the shuttle feeler from its rontward .or inoperative position toward its rearward or operative position.
The parts hereinbefore described may be of usual construction, and may operate in the usual manner to effect movement of the shuttle feeler thread cutter toward operative position on call for replenishment of filling. The filling is replenished when the shuttle is at the filhng replenishing side of the loom where the shuttle feeler and thread cutter are located, and it sometimes happens that before the shuttle has passed into the filling replenishing box, the shuttle feeler and thread cutter on their movement rearwardly 'to operative position, engage the side of the Fulcrumed for retarding or delaying the final movement of the shuttle feeler and thread cutter to rearward operative position, so that the shuttle may pass without contact with either. Various forms of devices may be devised for effecting this purpose, and one good practical form of means to this end will now be described.
Mounted on the loom frame is a bracket 36 which may be secured by a bolt 37 to the filling stand bracket 3 or any other convenient portion of the machine frame. The bracket 36 has the rearward'ly extending arms 38 to which is pivoted at 39 the rearwardly extending arm 40. A spring 41' pref- I erably of leaf type may be employed for exerting downward ressure on the arm 40 for a purpose that wil presently appear. In the present instance, the spring 41 is secured in a position to effect its purpose by means of the bolt 37 which secures the bracket 36 in place, the free end of the spring resting upon the arm 40 as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.
The rear end portion of the arm 40 has a stop or shoulder 42 which is adapted to engage a portion of the shuttle feeler 12, such portion, in the present instance, being a stop pin 43 as indicated in Fig. 2, the construction being such that when the shuttle feeler and thread cutter are moved from their normal inoperative or front position as indicated in Fig. 1, toward their rearward or operative position, the pin 43 on the shuttle feeler will engage the stop shoulder 42 on the arm 40 and retard or stop the movement of the shuttle feeler toward full rearward position, thus iving the shuttle time to pass 1nto the shutifie bo'x without Contact with either the shuttle feeler or thread cutter.
Pivotally mounted on the arm 40 at 44 is the finger 45, the lower end portion 46 of which is adapted to be engaged by a part on the lay as the latter moves frontwardly toward its beat-up position. In the present instance, the lay has secured thereto a bracket provided with a portion 47 above which and against the front portion 48 of the lay 49 the end 46 of the finger 45 is adapted to engage when, after a call for filling replenishment, the shuttle feeler and thread cutter have been moved partway rearwardly to operative position as indi cated in Fig. 2. When the parts'are in the position as indicated in Fig. 2, and the lay moves frontwardly to complete its beat, the end 46 of the finger 45 will engage the ledge 47 and lift the finger 40 from the position indicated in Fig. 2 to that in Fig. 3, thereby removing the stop shoulder 42 from the path of the pin 43 and permit the shuttle feeler and thread cutter to continue their movement toward full rearward or operative position.
The finger 45 has a shouldered portion 50 which is adapted to engage in front of the bracket 51 extending upwardly from the arm 40 and to which the finger 45 .is pivoted. A spring 52 normally acts upon the finger 45 to malntain the shoulder 50 against the front of the projection 51, but permits the finger 45 to yield from the position indicated in Fig. 2 to that in Fig. 3, as the lay moves to complete its frontward beat.
When the shuttle feeler and thread cutter are in normal front or inoperative position as indicated in Fig. 1, it is desirable that the finger 45 be not struck by the lay, or in other words be held out of its operative position. To this end, in the present instance of the invention, the arm 40 is provided with a ledge 53, the under surface of which is adapted to engage the upper portion 54 of the end of the shuttle feeler, as the feeler moves to its frontward or inoperative position, the construction being such, and the incline of the ledge 53 being so disposed with respect to the end 54 of the shuttle feeler, that as the shuttle feeler moves front- Wardly to inoperative position, the end 54 rides beneath the ledge 53 and lifts or raises the arm 40 from the position indicated in Fig. 2 to that indicated in Fig. 1, that the end 46 of the finger 45 will be in position to not be engaged by any part of the lay as the latter completes its frontward beat.
When there is no call for filling replenishment, and the loom is weaving normally, the shuttle feeler 12 is in its front position as indicated in Fig. 1, and the ledge 53 thereof rests upon the top end portion 54 of the shuttle feeler.
If desired, the raceway or the top surface of the lay may be recessed at 55 (Fig. 1) to provide an entranceway for the shuttle feeler and thread cutter to operative position as the lay beats up.
The construction described for effecting a delay or retardation in the movement of the shuttle feeler and thread cutter from operative to inoperative position on call for filling replenishment, is a good practical form of the present invention, but applicant believes he is the first in the art to provide means for effecting the purposes hereinbefore described, and desires it to be understood that various changes and modifications of the construction may be made within the invention as pointed out by the claims.
What is claimed is 1. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay, a feeler and thread cutter, means for moving the feeler thread cutter from frontward to rearward operative position upon call for replenishment of filling, an arm pivotall mounted on the loom frame and having 1ts free end portion operating stop carried by the feeler to en gage the stop carried by the arm as the ee or moves rearwardly toward operative position, and a finger carried by the arm and actuated by the lay as it moves frontwardly to lift the arm and free the feeler and thread cutter for movement to full operative position.
2. In a filling replenishing loom, the oombination-of the lay, a feeler and thread eutter movable rearwardly to operative posltion on call for replenishment of filling, a
stop arm for engaging the feeler as the latter moves towar rearward position and acting to stop the rearward. movement of the feeler and thread cutter, a-finger carried by the arm, and a part mounted on the lay to engage the finger and lift the stop arm to free the feeler and thread cutter to further rearward movement as the lay heats up.
3. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay, a shuttle feeler thread cutter, means for moving it from a frontward to a rearward position upon call for replenishment of filling, a stop arm for stopping the feeler thread cutter at a position intermediate its front and rear positions as it'moves rearwardly, a finger connected'to the stop arm and actuated as the lay moves to front position to move the stop arm and free the feeler thread cutter to further rearward movement. 4. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay, a shuttle feeler thread cutter, means for moving it rearwardly upon call for replenishment of filling, a, stop arm having a shoulder for stopping the feeler thread cutter atv an intermediate position, a finger connected to the stop arm and actuated as the lay moves to front position to free the feeler thread cutter to further rearward movement.
5. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay, a feeler thread cutter movable from an inoperative to an operative position on call for replenishment of filling, a stop for momentarily stopping the feeler thread cutter at an intermediate position before it reaches operative position, and a finger for tripping the stop to permit movement of the feeler thread cutter to full operative position as the lay moves frontwardly.

In a filling replenishin loom the combination'of the lay and shutt e, a feeler thread cutter movable from an inoperative to an operative position on call for replenishment of filling, a stop arm for retarding the feeler thread cutter in its movement from its inoperative to its operative position to permit the shuttle to escape contact by the feeler thread cutter, and a finger for freeing the feeler thread cutter from control of the stop arm as the lay moves frontwardly.

In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay. and shuttle, a shuttle feeler movable from an inoperative to an o erative position on call for replenishment of filling, a retarding device for retarding the movement of the shuttle feeler to operative position to permit the shuttle to pass means operating to release the shuttle feeler from the retarding device as the lay moves frontwardly and permit the shuttle feeler tovcontinue its movement to operative position. i
9. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay, a feeler and thread cutter, means for moving them from aninoperative to an operative position on call for replenishment of filling, and means for suspending the movement of the feeler and thread cutter from operative to inoperative position until the lay has reached a predetermined frontward position and then permitting movement of the feeler and thread putter to full operative position.
10. In a loom, the combination of the lay and shuttle box, a shuttle, a shuttle feeler, means for moving the shuttle feeler from a frontward to a rearward position, and feeler stopping means that stops the rearward movement of the shuttle feeler before it reaches full rearward position to avoid contact with the shuttle as it passes to the shuttle-box, and then frees the feelerto further rearward movement.
11. In a loom, the combination of, the lay and shuttle box, a shuttle, a shuttle feeler and thread cutter normally maintained in an inoperative position, means for moving the shuttle feeler and thread cutter to operative position, means to modify the movement imparted to the shuttle feeler and thread cutter by the moving means until the shuttle has entered the adjacent shuttle-- means operating to check 7 the rearward,
without contacting with the feeler, and

13. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay and shuttle, a shuttle feeler, means for moving the shuttle feeler rearwardly upon call for filling replenishment, and means for retarding the rearward movement of the feeler until the lay has reached a'predetermined position and then freeing the feeler to further rearward movement.
14. In a filling replenishing loom, the
combination of a shuttle feeler, means for movingthe shuttle feeler toward rearward position upon call for filling replenishment, and means operating as the feeler is moved rearwardly for causing a dwell in its rearward movement.
15. In a fillin replenishing loom, the combination of t e lay and shuttle box, a shuttle, a feeler thread cutter, means for moving it from a frontward to a rearward position on call for replenishment of filling, a retarding device actmg to retard the rearward movement of the feeler thread cutter to prevent contact with the shuttle as the latter is boxed, means for releasing the feeler thread cutter from the retarding device to permit the feeler thread cutter to move to full rearward position, and means for returning the retarding device to inopfilling, a retardin movement of the eeler to rearward position erative position as the feeler thread cutter returns to frontward position.
16. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay and shuttle, a shuttle feeler, means for moving it toward rearward position on call for replenishment of device acting to retard and avoid contact with the passing shuttle and freeing the shuttle feeler to full rearward movement when the shuttlehas passed, and means normally acting to retain the shuttle feeler and retarding device in. inoperative position.
17. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a shuttle feeler, means for moving it to operative position on call for replenishment of filling, a retarding device rendered effective to retard the movement of the shuttle feeler to rearward position by movement of the feeler from inoperative position, and means for freeing thefeeler from the retarding device to permit it to move to full rearward position.
18. In a filling replenishing loom, a shuttle feeler, means for moving it rearwardly on call for replenishment of filling, a stop that engages the shuttle feeler and stops it in an intermediate position, and a trip for disengagingthe stop from the shuttle feeler.
