Patented Nov. 5,1872.

4M. FHOI'D-LITHOGRAPHIC CQMYfOSEORNES PROCESS) UNITE STATES DANIEL 'I. HOFFMAN, OF SMITHVILLE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHiNG=MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,832, dated November 5, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL T. HOFFMAN, of Smithville, in the county of Wayne and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new anduscful ImprovementsinWashing-Machine; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being hadto the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a washingmachine, as willbe hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same,'I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section of my machine.
A represents the tub of my washing-machine, which is made in semicircular form, as shown, and supported upon legs B B. In the center of the tub A is a vertical transverse partition or board, 0, which is perforated, and extends from a suitable distance below the top edge to near the bottom of the tub. In the tub A is placed a swinging box, consistingof side pieces D D, bottom E, and hinged top or door G. The bottom E is curved to correspond with the curvature of the bottom of the tub,.
and passes between said bottom and the lower edge of the central partition 0. The side pieces D D are attached to the edges of the bottom E, and incline inward and upward.
The ends of the side pieces D D are attached to levers H H, two on each side of the machine,
said levers being let into each other, and at the joint provided with an outward-projecting pin or stud, a, which rests 'in a notch formed in the upper edge of the tub A, and thus forming the pivots upon which the box swings. The bottom E and side pieces D D are perforated; and to the upper edge of one of said side pieces is hinged the top or lid G, which closes down upon the other side piece. This swinging box is placed so that the vertical board 0 will be within the same, and thus two receptacles for the clothes are formed, said clothes being washed by the swinging of the box pressing or squeezing the clothes between said perforated partitions O and the perforated side pieces G G. The outer ends of the opposite levers H H are connected by a rod, 1), forming the handles by which the box is operated. On one side of the tub A is an upward-projecting flange, I, for the attachment of a clothes-wringer.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within-described washing-machine, consisting of the tub A with perforated vertical partition 0, and the swinging box, composed of the perforated bottom E, perforated side pieces D D, hinged top G, and levers H II, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto ,set my hand and seal this 9th day of September, 1872.
