VTo 'all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I,v INGEBRET B'HN a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Srumsanden, .in the'Kingdom of Norway, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tunneling-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following'tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to tunneling machines of the kind which cuts away the rock without the aid of explosives and has for its object a driving mechanism for the cutters in machines of this kind.
In accordance with the invention the reciprocating cutters are moved by means of a disk performing an oscillating movement about its center, and the edge of which is connected directly or indirectly with the reciprocating cutters. The said disk may receive its movement from a crank or the like at one end of a rotating shaft, said crank being connected with the oscillating disk by means of a rod, which is moved by means of the crank in such a manner that it describes a conical surface, the apex of which is the center of the disk. The disk connected to the rod will then perform the necessary oscillating movement.
In the accompanying drawing the figure is a longitudinal vertical section diagrammatically illustrating a machine embodying the invention.
The rock cutters 1 are mounted in an annular row and are guided through holes in a support 2 in front of the machine.
The back ends of said rock cutters 1 are connected by means of balls and sockets 3 to a disk 4 which in turn is supported at its center on a part 6 of the machine by means of ball and socket `5.
The said disk 4 is fastened to the forked end of a rod 7, the other end of which projects loosely through an eccentric boring 8 in a rotating disk 9. The disk 9 is mounted on the shaft 10 of a motor 11 or the like.

As the rod 7 is loosely connected to the crank disk 9, the disk 4 will not be rotated by the action of the crank disk relatively'to the drum 12 and the support 2. The support 6 is fixed in the drum and extends through the forked end of the rod 7 so that any great amount of rotation of the disk 4 on the ball 5, caused by a back pressure exerted bythe drills in operation, is prevented by the forked end of rod 7 engaging the support 6.
` When the machine is working, the cutters 1 are reciprocated by means of disk 4 thus hammering on the tunnel wall. At the same time the drum 12 is slowly rotated so that the rods 1 are working along a circular path of the tunnel wall during the forward movement of the whole machine.
I claim:
` 1 In a tunneling machine, a plurality of reciprocating cutter bars, a guide for the latter, a centrally pivoted oscillatory disk, universal connections between the cutters and disk, and means to impart an oscillatory movement to the latter, whereby the cutter bars are reciprocated.
2. In a tunneling machine, a plurality of reciprocating cutter bars, a guide for the latter, a centrally pivoted oscillatory disk, ball and socket joints connecting the cutters and disk, and means to impart an oscillatory movement to the latter, whereby the cutter bars are reciprocated.
3. In a tunneling machine, a plurality of reciprocating cutter bars, a guide for the latter, a. centrally pivoted oscillatory disk, ball and socket joints connecting the cutters and disk, means to impart an oscillatory movement to the latter, whereby the cutter bars are reciprocated, and means to simultaneously rotate the disk and guide` 4. In a tunneling machine, a plurality of reciprocating cutter bars, a guide for the latter, a centrally pivoted oscillatory disk, ball and socket joints connecting the cutters and disk, a rod connected to the rear side of the disk coaxially with the same, and
