LOCK.
APPLICATION FILED JUN8. I918.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BEN M. STONE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LOCK.
Application filed June 8, 1918. Serial No. 238,875.'
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, BEN M. STONE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new'and useful improvements in looks for traveling cases,
bags, trunks or similar articles, and consists in the matters and things illustrated and hereinafter more fully described and claimed. 1
In the drawings:
Figure 1 illustrates in a front elevation, a traveling suit case or bag, embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged, vertical, sectional View through the lock and the supporting members for the several parts thereof;
Fig. 3 is a detached plan view of a portion of one of the supporting parts to which my lock is attached.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the keeper member of one of the locks.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of that portion of the lock adapted to be engaged by the 'keeper member illustratedin F ig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view 'of a'plate and the hasp member of the second look.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a lock member adapted to be engaged by the hasp member illustrated in Fig. 6.
In that embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, I have chosen to illustrate the use of my improved lock in connection with a travelers suit case or bag, represented as a whole by the letter A. Such a bag has a lower compartment B, an upper or top compartment C and an inter mediate partition member D.
The lower compartment B is provided with a front supporting member or wall 1.; the upper compartment by 'a supporting member or wall 2; and the intermediate partition is provided. with a supporting member or wall3. Upon the front face of the support 1' is an escutcheon plate 4 secured thereto by screws or rivets passing through suitableapertures 5 in said plate. Said plate 4 is also provided with a suitably Specification of Letters Patent.
shaped hasp slot or aperture 6 and with a movable or sliding knob 7 of a conventional lock mechanism. A key-hole slot 8 in said knob 7 affords access to the lock mechanism of the bolt 9. -10isa slotted tongue on the hasp 11, said tongue being adapted to enter the slot 6 and to be engaged by the bolt 9.
12 is a second plate adapted to be secured to the front face of-the supporting member oriwall 3 by means of bolts or rivets passing through the apertures 13 of said plate 12. 14 is a lock casing adapted to be suitably secured to the support 3 by any convenient means. Said lock frame 14 may also be secured to that part of-the support 3 constltuting the supporting partition D, by
means of screws or rivets, passing through apertures in the laterally extending flanges 15 of said lock casing 14, or otherwise.
Projecting outwardly from the face of the lock casing 14 is a tubular sleeve or extension member 16, adapted to pass through a suitable aperture 17 in the escutcheon plate12. A lock releasing s ring pressed bolt member 18 extends ongitudinally through the sleeve 16. Upon its inner end, said'bolt 18 is provided with a spring 19, one end'of which presses against the interior rear wall of the lock casing 14 and tends to normally press the bolt member 18 outwardly into position shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 5. The releasing member 18 is'provided with a longitudinally extending keyhole slot or" aperture 20 affordingmeans of access for a suitable key to release the lock or bolt member;18, and permit of its longitudinal movement.
21, 21 are slotted tongue members on a keeper 22 which tongue members 21 are adapted to enter slotted apertures 23 in the lock casing 14', there to be engaged by hooked ends 24 of thebolt member 18.
Upon the escutcheon'plate 12, I provide an extension leaf or tongue 25, and on the 'liasp 11, I also provide an extension tongue 26. The proximate edges of the tongues 25 and 26 are formed to interlock in a familiar manner and to extend about a transversely arranged pintle or hinge pin 27. 28 1s a coiled spring surrounding the hinge pin from the support 1 and escutcheon plate 4:, the hasp 11 and its tongue 26 turning about the pintle or hinge pin 27 in a familiar manner.
When my improved lock is applied to the supporting members 1, 2 and 8, which constitute part of a travelers suit case, for example, it will be noticed that the member 22 and slotted tongues 21, 21, are not visible from the exterior and that the suit case as a whole presents a neat appearance.
It will be manifest from the foregoing that the three supporting members, 1, 2 and 3, may be locked together or the members 1 and 3, or the members 2 and 3, may be locked together. By operatinga key in the keyhole 20 and pressing the bolt member 18 inwardly the lock ends 24 are released from engagement with the slotted tongue 21, the supporting member 2 may be raised quite independently of the supporting member 3,
locked-together, supporting members 2 and 3 may be simultaneously raised away from the supporting member 1.
This new and improved lock is adaptable to man forms of travelers suit cases, bags and trun (S, and it is also adapted for use with other articles of merchandise, such for example, as furniture, jeWelry cases and the like. I therefore do not desire to have my invention limited to any particular use nor to have the invention restricted except as and in the manner set forth in the subj oined claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A key-hole lock and its support, a plate therefor, a hinged spring pressed hasp depending from said plate, a second key-hole lock and a support therefor, said second look being adapted for operative engagement with the spring pressed hasp, and a keeper member for engagement with said first mentioned lock.

5. A device of the character described comprising two support members, the supporting surfaces of which are in the same plane, a lock mechanism secured to the face of one support, a second lock mechanism secured to the other support, a plate upon the latter support, a hasp member hingedly secured to said plate and adapted for operative engagement with the first lock mechanism, a third support and a keeper thereon adapted for operative engagement with the second look mechanism, the plate being also in operative relation to the second lock mechanism.
6. A support and a keeper secured thereto, a second support, a plate on the face of the latter, a lock mechanism also on said second support and in alinement with said keeper, a movable member in said lock mechanism having one end projecting beyond the face of said plate, a third support, a lock mechanism on the face thereof and a hasp member hingedly secured to said plate and adapted for operative engagement with the last mentioned lock mechanism.
7 A support and a keeper secured thereto, a second support, a plate on the face of the latter, a lock mechanism also on said second support and in alinement with said keeper, a movable member in said lock mechanism having one end projecting beyond the face of said plate, a third support, a lock mechanism on the face thereof and a hasp member hingedly secured to said plate and 1 lock mechanism, a' second lock mechanism secured to the plate support, in a plane other than that of the plate a part of said lock mechanism being in operative engagement In testimony that I claim the foregoing with said plate, a third support in substanas my invention I aflix my signature in the 10 tial alinement in the plane of the other two presence of tWo Witnesses, this 6th day of supports, and a keeper member on the third June, A.
