Description

S. VOORHEES.
ABDOMINAL SUPPORT- APPLICATION nuzo AUG-4, 1911.
1,327,930, Patented Jan. 1.11920.
7 e g I ATTORNL'IS UNITED A PATENT snnztnon vooiannns, or SYRACUSE, EW YORK.
ABDOMINAL surron'r'.
To all whom it'may concern:
Be it known that I, SHELDON-VOORHEES a citizen of the United States, residingat Syracuse, in thecounty of -Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Abdominal Support, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to" abdominal supports and has forits object a support which is particularlysim-ple in construction',.ea'sily applicable and adjustable to different fig ures, and highly efficient and durable in use. The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations'a-nd constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Indescribing this invention, referenceiis had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate" corresponding parts in all theviews.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of this suport.
Figs. 2 and 3 are plan views of the front and rear plates.
Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view thereof showing the plates bent to conform to the contour of the sacro-iliac and abdominal regions.
Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic view showing in side elevation the support applied to a body.
This abdominal support comprises, generally, a single front plate, a single back plate, and elastic means connecting the plates at their ends, the plates being normally-rigid and being bendable or adjustable to conform to the contour of the figure to which the support is applied, it being understood of course, that different adjustments are required for different figures.
In the drawing, 1 designates the front plate, 2, the back plate, and 3 the elastic means as straps connecting the front and back plates, the straps being connected to the plates at their ends and being provided with suitable means as buckles 4 or by means of which they are lengthened or shortened. The support is applied and removed by merely fastening or unfastening one of these buckles.
Each plate 1 or 2 is elongated in general form -and is formed with perforations or openings as slots 5 in the end portions 6 thereof, these slots being beveled or inclined and converging toward the ends of the plates and being located near the lengthwise upper and lower edges of the plate,
I, Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented a -513, 1920"." Application filed August 4,1917. SerialNo'. 184,393; a
As here shown, the upper andlower edges of said end portions 6 arealso-inclined and converge toward the ends of. the plate, and the slots- 5 are located near. and. parallel to the inclined edges 7. The inclined slots fa:
cilitate the holding of the plates in position a on the. body without discomfort to the wearer'and likewise the inclined edges 7 contribute to this end. v The plates may also.
be 1 provided with comfort due to perspiration. Theplates are 'inclosed 1n; coveror, wrapper: 9 of any suitable; material as: cloth. or chamoisskin.
Said plates-1, 2 ELI'BzPIjQifQIZZLblYOf a non-con rosive metal,,as ;alum1num. a
. lQarehoSe supporters depending fromthe front. platefllr, However, these; .may; be omitted; although, they contribute in some ther perforations: or slots 8. to relieve dis-r cases and to some extent, to hold the front plate from slipping upwardly, 1 i
In operation, the'back plate2 is placed in line with the crests of the ilia, the center of the plate being fitted into the sacral depression'and the ends thereof rising over the posterior portions of the ilia, the single plate the sacral region; and the front plate is applied to the lower abdomen in position to rebeing bendable to conform to the contour of inforce the front wall of the false pelvis, the
plate 1 being'also b'endableto conform to the contour of the abdomen so that the end portions due to the inclined or beveled slots 5 adhere or cause thewrapper or cover 9 to adhere without discomfort to the body. -The elastic straps 3 pass forwardlyand downwardly from the ends of the rear or sacroiliac below the anterior spines of the ilia .to
the ends of the abdominal plate. Owing to the use of a single plate at the back adjust- I able to conform to the sacro-iliac region, I
said plate makes an ideal carrier for weight received through the elastic straps from the single rigid front plate which also is adjusta single elongated rigid sacro-iliac plate both conformable to the contour of the body to which the support is applied and both constructed to adhere to the body without discomfort.
The plates and the connecting straps form a narrow annulus which is set at an inclination, to dispose the abdominal plate lower than the saoro-iliac plate, and enable the abdomen to be supported from the hips without applying pressure to the Waist.
' What I claim is:
1. An abdominal support including asingle rigid sacro iliac plate, a single abdominal. plate, each plate being relatively narrow and elongated in a horizontal direction and adapted tobear at its central portion on the sacro iliac or abdominal region, of the body and having its ends arranged to come near the. lateral limits of the body, and straps connecting the ends of the plates, said plates and straps forming substantially an inclined annulus adapted to support the abdomen from the hips without constricting the waist ofthe wearer, substantially as and for the purpose described.
1 2. An abdominal support including a single normally rigid sacro iliac plate and a single rigid abdominal plate, each plate rela-,
tively narrow and elongated in ahorizontal direction and adapted to bear at its central portion on the sacro iliac or abdominal region of the body and having its ends ar ranged to come near the lateral limits of the body, the plates tapering along their upper and lower edges toward their ends, and straps connecting the ends of the plates, said plates and straps forming substantially a narrow annulus set at an inclination, with the abdominal plate lower than the sacroiliac plate, whereby the abdomen is'supported from the hips without subjecting the waist to pressure, substantially as. and for the purpose specified.
3. An abdominal support comprising a single normally rigid front plate, and a single normally rigid back plate, the plates being elongated in a horizontal direction and having their ends arranged to come near the lateral limits of'the body, and elastic means connecting the'ends of the plates and forming therewith a narrow annulus set at an inclination, whereby the abdomen is supported from the hips Without constricting the waist of the wearer, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto I a signed my name, at Auburn,in thecounty of Cayuga and State of New York, this 14th day of July, 1917. V
