PIPE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 13, 1920.
Application filed July t?, 1919. Serial No. 308,992.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, JAMES HEGKMAN, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Clarendon, in the county of Donley and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Pipe-Holder, of which the following is a speciication.
The Object of my invention is to provide a novel, conveniently operated, eil'ective and compact pipeholder. l attain the objects of my invention by the mechanism illustrated' in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation or" the invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan of same; and
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section, approximately through the center of the device.
Like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, l provide side members 1, within which is mounted a block 2 by suitable bolts as shown; and extending through member 2, parallel with side members 1, I provide a a threaded bolt 7, having a square head 8, and an opposite grooved end 10 which is swivelly secured to sliding jaw l by a set screw 9. rThe tace of jaw d, designated as 17 in Fig. 2, is suitably grooved or corrugated to insure the most effective grip on a pipe. .law l is provided with flanges .5 slidably mounted in slot 6 of side members 1 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
@pposed to jaw il l provide a novel cam 15 having a l/-shaped pipe engaging tace 16, perfectly grooved. Cam 15 is swingably mounted on a suitable bolt or pivot 14 mounted on the side members as shown in Fig. 2. Mounted near the extreme ends of members 1 l provide a transverse bar 2, on which is mounted a suitable leaf spring 18 which is operatively connected with cam 14 by the pivoted link 19.
Referring to Fig. 2, 1 provide a trip or.
finger 21 aiiixed to bolt 20, which is mounted lon members 1 and held in place by suitable bearings 22. The end of member 21 presses downwardly on leaf spring 18, as shown in Fig. 3. I provide a suitable spacing `block 11, between which is mounted cam 15, said blocks being mounted on bolts 12 and 14 which project through the side members 1. Spacing blocks 11 operate to prevent any side twisting ot' cam 15. As shown in Fig. 2 bolt 20 is provided with an elongated head 23. Members 13, mounted on bolt 12, serve as spacing members for leaf spring 18 which extends between them.
The pipe is engaged by jaw 4- and the op posed cam 15, each ot which members has a groove lr/shaped face to more eiiectively hold the pipe. The cam being mounted at a point below and offset from center, a swinging movement of the cam toward the pipe will increase the grip on it, a certain flexibility being obtained by the provision of leaf spring 18 and link '19 connected to the cam. The pipe holder is a device to hold pipe any time the blocks of a pipe-puller are released. To admit the pipe between cam 15 and jaw 4f, bolt 20 is rotated toward the pipe by means of the elongated head 23, thus tilting linger 21, which is welded to or integral with member 20, downward so that its tree end bears against leaf spring 18 and moves cam 15 to a more nearly vertical position, enlarging the space between it and the jaw t. Leaf spring 18 must be of suicient strength to .hold cam 15 firmly against the pipe so as to insure a safe grip.
l/Vhat 1 claim is:
1. In a pipepuller, the combination ot a trame, a j aw slidably mounted in the frame, means for securing the jaw in an adjusted position in said trame, the jaw having a V -shaped knurled tace, an opposed cam having a V -shaped knurled face, the cam being swingably mounted, a link connected to the cam, and a spring secured to the frame and adjustably connected with the link.
2. 1n a pipepuller, the combination or" a frame, a pipe-engaging jaw slidably mounted in the frame, a threaded bolt mounted in the frame and connected to said jaw for adjustingA same, an opposed cam having a V-shaped pipe-engaging face, a link connected to the cam, a spring connected to the link and mounted at the end of the frame, and means for adjustably exerting pressure on the spring to control the action of the cam substantially as shown.
