Be it known that I, FREDERICK C. YVARNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in alltivators, the present improvements being particularly designed and adapted for use in connection with a wheeled cultivator, the
l present embodiment ofthe invention including a riding cultivator, of the pivot axle type provided with pivoted cultivator gangs.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an improved wheeled cultivator embodying and harmoniously combining all of the essential principles of operation and features of construction of the ordinary riding pivot axle and pivot gang cultivators.
A further object is the provision of an im# proved cultivator having means whereby the supporting or ground wheels and cultivator gangs may be simultaneously and correspondingly tilted or swung laterally through the single or simultaneous lateral swinging movement or actuation of said gangs to one side or in the same general direction, or the gangs be moved uniformly toward or from each other without imparting any tilting or lateral movement to said ground or supporting wheels on their pivots.l In other words, suitable means or mechanism is interposed between and connected to the pivoted gangs and cultivator or supporting wheels whereby when the gangs are simultaneously swung laterally by the operator in the same direction or to one side through the foot stirrups or the handles, such movement will correspondingly move or actuate the supporting wheels whereby to carry the cultivator frame in the samegeneral direction, or when one of said gangs is moved laterally and independently without the concurrence of thc other, said supporting wheels will be correspondingly moved proportionately or to what may be termed a half-cut, that is to say, a movement of substantially half of the movement occasioned when both of said gangs are moved in the same direction as above indicated.

present instance, in the form of what may be termed a compensating or equalizing yoke adapted not only to simultaneously and correspondingly swing or pivot the cultivator or supporting wheels through the single or simultaneous lateral swinging movements of said gangs as above described, but which will stand neutral or out of action with respect to said supporting wheels when the gangs are moved uniformly and simultaneously toward or from each other.

Uuder normal conditions the weight of the operator in the seat overbalances the cultivator gangs and the teeth or shovels thereof are out of and clear from the groundvso as to permit of idle transportation and corner turning of the implement Without any fur-l ther attention, and when it is desired to bring the gangs into action, the operator simply exerts a suiicient downward pressure upon the plow handles or stirrups, or both, to keep the cultivator teeth or shovels to their work, mal'rin such up and down and side or lateral a justments or movements (including under certain desired conditions the harmonious swinging ofthe cultivator or ground wheels) as the constantly changing working conditions call for, such counterbalancing seat lever, in combination with the mechanism hereinbefore described, giving the operator perfect control of the cultivator gangs both vertically and'horizonta-lly as well as independently of each other and of the cultivator wheels under counterbalanced conditions, calling upon him for the exertion of but little strength in meeting the various exigencies of actual service.
)Vith the above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of this speclfication, Figure 1, is a. front perspective view of a Wheeled cultivator embodying my invention, in its normal or operative position, the shovels beingremoved and the cultivator gangs and pivot wheels extending in parallel relation to each other (see diagrammatic view, Fig. 12).

The improved cultivator comprises a suitable frame consisting, in the present instance,'of a pair of side members 1, converging at their front ends and bolted to the tongue 2, the rear ends being bolted to the axle beams. i
The rear end of the tongue 2, and forward portions of the frame members 1, are
provided with a .depending gang arch 4, andthe axle beams- 3, are provided with sleeves 3, adapted.: to receive and adjustably contain the stub axles 5. The vertically extending portions of the stub axles are provided with axle bearing pivot sleeve 6, the latter being provided on their outer sides with the cultivator wheel axles 6a,.a'nd on their inner sides with bracket members Gb, the latter being adapted to receive and support the pivoted cultivator gangs 7, when the latter are elevated or put up for transportation as illustrated in Fig. 3 o the drawings, it being obvious that when the gangs 7, are thus hooked upon the, bracket ier - pivots in some suitable and convenient manmembers 6b, the cultivator wheel axle 6, and the cultivator or ground wheels 8, will be furthrer locked as against tilting or vibrative movements on the pivots in transportation. l
As a means of securing the pivot sleeves 6, on the stub axles 5, as well as for limiting the pivotal movements of the 'sleeves the latter are provided with slots 6, (see Fig. 10) adapted to receive and contain stub bolts 5', and as a means of connecting and simultaneously actuating the pivot sleeves 6, said sleeves are provided with forwardly extend ing arms 9, connected to each other by means of links 10, said links 10, in the present 'instance, being connected to a laterally mov-- able supporting member or spreader linl'; 1l. The cultivator gangs 7, are pivoted for both vertical and lateral movements by means of coupling members 12, the latterl being adjustably mounted toward and from each other, or horizontally, in coupling frames 12, at the lower ends of the gang arch 4.
The rear portions of the gangs are provided with suitable stirrups 13, and handles 14, `by mea-ns of which the gangs may be given the desired movements as hereinafter described.
The improved cultivator wheel and gang connecting, actuating, and controlling mechanism whereby the supporting orground wheels and pivoted cultivator gangs may be simultaneously and correspondingly tilted or swung laterally through the single or simultaneous lateral swinging movement or actuation of said gangs, or whereby the latter may be moved'uniformly toward or from each other in the active cultivation in and` along the row of growing plants, without V4imparting any tilting or lateral movement to said supporting wheels on their pivots comprises, in the-present instance, what may be termed a compensating lor equalizingl yoke consisting of two lever members 15, pivotally mounted on the laterally movable member or spreader link 11, and connected or geared .to each other intermediate their ner, as for example, by segmental gears or racks 15a, the lower ends of said lever members extending beneathA and being movably connected to the cultivator beams, in the present instance, through the medium of a keeper clip or bracket 7 n, whereby the `requisite-vertioaland lateral movements may be given to the cultivator gangs by the operator without any interference -with the movements ofthe connected parts. The yoke lever members 15, may be pivotally secured on the laterally movable supportin or spreader member 11, by means of pivot lts 15", and if desired, the segmental gears 15,
may be separately formed and adapted to" ing bolts 15C, as shown most clearly in Fig. G of the drawings. -If desired, the lever members 15, ma be secured in fixed relation to each other in some suitable and convenient manner, as for example, by means of a clamping bolt 16, extending through a 'slot 15d,and one of the gears 15a, in which instance it will be apparent that the members 15, will form a gang spreader yoke thereby preventing the gangs from being moved toward or from each other only permitting of the swinging or tilting movements of the ground wheels through the corresponding simultaneous lateral or swinging movements of the cultivator gangs.
By reason of the above construction it will be apparent that when the cultivator gangs are simultaneously and uniformly moved toward or from each other and the lever members 15, correspondingly moved as indicated by dotted. lines in Fig. 6 of the drawings, that no lateral motion will be imparted to the supporting or spreader meniber 11, connected to the pivoted cultivator wheels through the links 10, and arms 9,
l shown, thereby carrying the member 11, and
its connections to the right or to the left and correspondingly moving the pivoted wheels to the right or to tlie left as indicated in Figs. 15 and 14, respectively.
As a further means of enabling the oper- I ator to retain complete control of each cultivator beam or gang independently o f the other, moving vit separately either vertically oi' horizontally, as required by the crop, or condition or contour of the surface, or in passing obstructions, as well as providing means for counterbalancin the weight of thecultivator gangs where y to more completely and liarnipniously actuate the gangs and their connections for the purposes hereinbefore mentioned, a seat carrying lever 17 is provided, said lever, in the present iu- .y stance, comprising two beam members pivot- `ally mounted above the arch or axle portion of the cultivator frame, in the present instance, by means of a curved plate 18, upon which the members of the seat carrying lever 17, are adapted to rock to form a movable fulcrum for the latter, the rear end of the seat lever beingprovided with a seat 19, for the operator, and the forward end of the lever being provided with `a pivoted cross bar 20. The free or outerends of the cross bar 20, are provided with ldepending links or connecting members 21, adapted to be hooked into a plurality of openings 7b, of
the cultivator gangs whereby the leverage exerted by the lever 17, upon the gangs may be adjusted to correspond with the weight of the operator in the seat 19, it being also apparent that the leverage may be still further regulated or adjusted by moving the lever 17, forwardly or rearwardly through the medium of the pivot bolt 2Q, and the openings 22a.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
Having thus described one of the. embodiments of my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. In a cultivator, including laterally swinging wheels and gangs, a supporting member movably connected to said Wheels, and lever members on said supporting member intercommunicating with each other for uniform relative movement by corresponding relative movement of said gangs.
In a cultivator, a frame provided with laterally swinging pivot gangs and laterally swingingpivot wheels, a movable wheel guiding element, and lever members on' said wheel guiding element intercommunicating with and uniformly movable relative to each other and so operated by said pivot gangs only when the latter are moved uniformly toward and from each other.
3. In a cultivator having laterally swinging pivot wheels and gangs, wheel guiding and gang connecting elements movably interposed therebetween, said gang connecting elements being intergeared for a like movement toward each other through a like moveyment of said gangs independently of and while holding said wheel guiding element in a central or neutral position.
4. In an agricultural machine, a frame provided with laterally swinging Wheels and earth working implements, and Wheel andA implement connecting elements movably interposed therebetween, said implement connecting elements being intergeared to each other on said wheel connecting element for uniform relative movements to each other by like movements of said earth working implements without limparting any movement to said wheel connecting element.
5. An agricultural machine, comprising a frame, laterally swinging guiding andv earth working elements carried thereby, and latlerally swinging connecting and controlling elements lbetween said guiding and earth working elements, some of said connecting elements being intergeared to each other for uniform movement toward each other by like movement of said earth Working elements without imparting any movement to said laterally swinging guiding element and holding the latter in a stationary position when so moved.
6. In combination with a cultivator frame provided with laterally Swinging wheels and gangs, a movable wheel connecting and guiding member, articulated gang actuated members mounted on and carried by 'said wheel connectingV and guiding member, said articulated members intercommunicating with each other and holding said wheel connecting andv guiding member in a neutral position when uniformly moved relatively but constructed and arranged to interlock in fixed relative and opposed relation to each other to simultaneously swing said wheel connecting and guiding member when moved by corresponding movements of said gangs.
7. An agricultural machine, comprising a wheeled frame-provided with laterally swinging guiding and earth working elements, and mechanism interposed between and connected to said guiding and earth working elements, said mechanism including movable articulated gang actua-ted elements carried b v said guiding element for uniform movement toward each other by like movement of said gangs and as so moved holding said guiding element in a central position and interlock.- ing with each other in opposing relation for concurrent lateral movement of said guid- 'ing element by like lateral movement of said gangs.
8. An agricultural machine, comprising a wheeled frame provided with laterally swinging guiding and earth working'elements, and laterally swinging gang actuated elements movably interposed between and connected to said guiding and earth working elements said gang actuated elements being movably articulated o'n' said guiding element for uniform movement toward each other Without movement of said guiding element and interlocking for concurrent lateral movement of said guiding element when correspondingly moved by a like movement of said earth working elements.
9. An agricultural machine, comprising-a, frame, laterally swinging wheel guiding and earth working elements carried thereby, and connecting elements interposed therebetween, said elements being movably intergeared on said wheel Iguiding element whereby the same may be moved toward each otheruniformly by a like movement of said earth Working elements Without imparting any movement to said laterally swinging wheel guiding element and whereby the same will be interlocked in opposing relabeing movably interconnected on said guiding elementv and to said earth working elements whereby the same may be moved toward each other uniformly by a like movement of said earth working elements without imparting any movement to said laterally swinging guiding element and whereother for a concurrent lateral movement of said wheel connecting element by a like concurring lateral movement of said gangs.
12. In an 'agricultural machine, a movable steering element, earth working elements, and intergeared elements movably connected to each other and to said steering and earth working elements andvoperable by the latter.
13. ln a wheeled agricultural machine, laterally movable' steering and implement elements carried thereby, and laterally movable elements intergeared to each other and movably `connected to said steering and implement elements` and operable from and by the latter.
14. 'In an agricultural machine, a vehicle frame, laterally movable steering and earth working elementstherefor, and connecting and controlling elements movably intergeared with each other and with said steering and earth Working elements and 0perable by the latter toward and'from eachl other irrespective of said steering element and interlocking with each other and limparting movement to said steering. element when otherwise moved by said earth working elements.
15. A cultivator steering and controlling device, comprising a laterally swinging In combination with a cultivator proing ymember for uniform relative movement toward and from each other and for holding said steering member in a neutral position when so moved, said intergeared elements being also constructed and arranged relatively interlocking and concurrently moving said steering member laterally when otherwise moved.
16. In an agricultural machine, the combination of steering means, freely movable implements, members movably connected to the steering means and to the implements, and connections between said members constructed to move the steering means when the implements are simultaneously moved in the same direction, andarranged for simultaneous like movement toward and from each other while retaining the steering means motion-rss.i
17. An aig'rheultural machine provided with pivot axles and wheels, a member pivplements to be uniformly moved toward and from each other while retaining the mem-v ber motionless, and lmpartng movement to said member when the implements are simultaneously moved in the same direction, 0r one held stationary and the other moved.
18. A. cultivator provided with pivot axles and wheels, a radius bar pivotally connected to the axles, freely movable cultivator beams, members pivoted on theJ ba-r and movably connected to the beams, and connectionsbetween the lmembers arranged to allow movement of the beams toward and from each other While retaining the bar motionless, and moving the bar when the beams are simultaneously moved in the same direction. l
