MULTIPLE-CYLINDER-PUMP ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jan. 6', 192i),
Application filed March 1, 1917. Serial No. 151,756.
T his invention relates to an attachment for use in connectionwith a conventional construction of pump of the multiple cylinder plunger type shown in Patent No. 1,015,782 and is associated with the upper pump cylinder and air chamber of the pump.
The invention has for its dominant ob-' ject to provide an attachm nt for plunger pumps whereby such air as may collect within the upper cylinder of the pump due to the faulty seating of the water inlet check valve will be exhausted therefrom, hence, permitting proper operation of the pump at all times. 1
Another object of the invention is to provide means for shunting the air within the upper pump cylinder into the'air chamber of the pump, thereby replenishing the same when necessary.
Among other aims and objects of the invention may be recited, the provision of an attachment of the character mentioned with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production small, and efficiency and operation high.
All of the foregoing together with additional advantageous details and arrangements of parts of the preferred embodiients of my invention will be clear from the specific description hereinafter contained, when read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof wherein said embodiments of the invention are illustrated for the purpose of facilitating a full understanding of the present improvements.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical section through a portion of a multiple cylinder pump with my improved attachment applied thereto; and
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a slightly modified form of the attachment;
Referring now more specifically to the drawings and in connection with which like reference numerals will refer to the same parts in the several views,it isto be noted that I have shown by way of illustration my improved attachment as applied to the conventional type of multiple cylinder plunger pump. This pumpis as stated of a: conventional construction and therefore only the upper portion with which the at tachment will be associated has been illustrated. This pump includes an upper cylinder 1, the cylinder having arranged therein an air regulating valve 2 and having tapped mto engagement with the drop pipe 3 a short conduit 4:, the remaining extremity of which is turned into engagement with a suitable screw threaded opening formed in proximity of the base of the air chamber 5. A check valve 6 is arranged within the air chamber 5 and obviously, controls the passage of .air through the same into the conduit 7 which is tappedinto engagement with the same at a point near the uppcr'extremity thereof and communicates with a suitable pressure tank, not shown. A suitable elbow is engaged with the lower portion of the air chamber 5, that is, at a point below the check valve 6 and is provided with a check valve 8, the said valve serving as means for controlling the passage of air into the air chamber, upon operation of the plunger within the upper cylinder 1. To permit the discharging of water therefrom a discharge nozzle 9 is connected to the air chamber 5 and is provided with a valve 10 whereby the passage of water the-rethrough may be controlled at will by the'operator.
With more particular reference to the present improvements, I provide a substantially reversely curved conduit 11, arranging therein, preferably, intermediate the ends of the same, a valve .12 of the turning plug type. To the lower duit 11 is connected, while the upper extremity thereof extends into engagement with the upper portion of the cylinder 1 and has interposed in the connection therewith a suitable check valve 13. 7
If in the. operation of a pump of the character disclosed herein and in Patent #1,015,782, the water inlet valve does not seat perfectly, air will be drawn into said upper cylinder upon the up stroke of the plunger working therewithin. Consequently, upon the down stroke of the plunger, which stroke serves to force the collected air and water from the air chamortion of the chamber 5, the lower extremityof the conas may collect within the cylinder 1 will be passed by way of the check valve 13 into the conduit 11 and thereby discharged into the air chamber 5 and from the chamber 5 through the pipe 7 into the pressure tank. Continued pumping will cause air to be drawn into the chamber 5 through the inlet valve 8 and .fprced out of this chamber through the pipe 7 to the pressure tank. When it is desired to stop pumping air it is simply necessary to close: the valve or pipe 11 and open the valve 2 to permit water to be discharged.
In the Fig. 2 I have shown a slightly modified form of air shunting attachment, wherein the air chamber of the pump is arranged above the upper cylinder 1 and is designated for the purpose of convenience by the numeral 14L To convey such air as ma collect within the uaner c linder "into the lower portion 01' the air chamber 14: I provide a substantially straight con-.
duit 15, interposing a valve 16 of the turning plug type therein. One extremity of the conduit 16 is connected to the cylinder of the pump adjacent its upper end while the remaining extremity of the same is connected to the air chamber 1% adjacent its lower end. Thus, upon the opening or" the valve 16, air as may accumulate within the cylinder of the pump will be shunted there: from into the base of the air chamber 14 and from there will be delivered to the pressure tank or conveyed therefrom by way of the discharge nozzle-9. It is to' be noted, that with the modified form of air shunting attaphment, the use of check valves and the like is eliminated, thus, rendering the device exceedingly simple and obviating the liability of fauity operation oi the same.
Obviously, the constructions shown are capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my claim, I consider within invention.
I claim:
Tie combination with a pump including a cylinder having a plunger slidably mounted therein and an air chamber in operative communication with the cylinder, of a conduit leading from the lower portion of the air chamber and communicating with the upper portion of the cylinder as and for the purpose set forth. p
in testimony whereof-1 affix my signature hereto. 7
