To all whom z' may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. SULLIVAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at N. S. Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auto Lunch Kits, of which the following is a specication.
The invention meets the needs of tourists by providing means for satisfying the demands of nature with reference to satiating hunger and quenching thirst.
The-invention provides a kit especially adapted to be carried on the running board of an automobile and which will preserve food and drink in a wholesome condition and prevent it spoiling on the hottest day as provision is had for carrying an ample supply of ice and for the circulation of cool air, both of which are essential to keep the food from deteriorating on a warm day.
The invention consists of a case, a box within the case and spaced therefrom and a plurality of receptacles or trays within the box and detachable therefrom to provide for ready access to the food and to enable the parts to be thoroughly cleansed and reached for any desired purpose.
The drawings illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention. However, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet diiferent conditions,'various changes in the form, proportion," and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.

rllhe appliance comprises a box which contains a plurality of receptacles and a case in'closing thebox to protect the same from the rays of the'sun and to subserve the purpose of a `jacketgenerally to prevent injury to the box and the quick heating of the contents thereof which is injurious to food in warm weather.
The case comprises a bottom l, ends 2, a back 3, a top 4L and a front 5. The top i is hinged in any manner to the upper portion of the back 3 so as to swing upward into open position, as indicated most clearly in Figs. 1 and 2.. The front 5 is hinged at its lower edge to the forward edge of the bottom l in any substantial and preferred way to admit of said front swinging downward into horizontal position, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 2 in which .position it may form a support for any one of the receptacles of the kit or other `article to be placed thereon. Suitable bracing means 6 sustain the front 5 in horizontal position and, as indicated, the bracing means consist of fold-- ing elements which are pivoted to one another and to the ends and front of the case. In order to maintain a close joint between the front 5 and the ends 2, grooves or channels 7 are formed along the ends of the front 5 to receiveV the forward vertical edges of the ends 2 when the front 5 is in closed position. In this manner the front prevents inward or outward displacement of the fol*- ward edge portions of the ends 2 when the case is closed. The top 4 has a depending rim 8 which is adapted to embrace the upper edge portions of the inclosing walls of the case. thereby holding the front 5 in closed position when the case is shut. It is to be understood that the case when closed will be made secure by suitable locking means, not shown.
The box located within the case is of such relative proportions as to leave a space A between the contiguous walls of the case and box to prevent the heat from striking through on a warm day and quickly melting the ice and heating the food. While the box is detachably fitted within the case it is supported therein in a manner to prevent relative movement which would tend to produce a disagreeablenoise when the vehicle to which the appliance is attached is in motion., Any suitable iilllngmeans such as a strip B may be located in the space A to prevent relative movement of the box.` Thebox is indicated generally by the reference numeral' O and like the case comprises `inclosing walls such as a bottom, ends, front, back and top. The top of the box is designated by the reference letter C and. is hinged to the back of the box so as to swing upward into open position. Fig. G. A portion of the front of the box is cut away and isclosed. by means of a door C2 which is hinged at' its lower edge to the forward edge of the bottom of the box. Opposite edge portions of the door C2 are formed with grooves or channels c which receive outwardly extending portions at the endsl of the openingwhich is closed by the door C2. This is shown most clearly in F l. Then the door O2 is closed it is held shut by the depending rim of the top C which embraces theupper edges of the inclosing walls of the box; A vertical partition 10 divides the box into two chambers, one of which receives au ice receptacle 11 and the other a plurality of receptacles for receiving di iferent articles of food. Openings 12 are formed in the partition 10 for the circulation of air and the portions ofthe partition cut out to forni the openings 12 are bent laterally to form restsyl to serve as supporting means for the foodcontainingreceptacles. The ice recep'tacle 11 may be of any capacity and is fitted with a cover 14 which closes tightly to prevent the splashing out of water resultingfrom melting ofthe ice.
Rests ,15 are provided on the opposite end wall ofthe chamber in which are disposed the food receiving receptacles to act jointly with the rests 131 for supporting the recepta'cles. Two receptacles 16 and 1T are disposed one above the other in the upper portion of the food chamber and extend'the entire leiigth andwidth of said chamber and areadapted to receive food of any nature. Other receptacles 18" and 19 are disposedin the lower portionl of the food chamber one beside the other and are also intended to receive food of any nature. rlhe receptacle 18 is closed by meansof a cover 2O and is adaptedwto receive butter, preserves or the like.` The several receptacles 16, 17, 18 and 19" are constructed in the form of t'ays or boxes so as to contain articles of food of any nature and keep them separated. The top receptacle 16 removable through the upper end of the box C whereas the remaining receptacles are removable through the fron't of the food chamber which is closed by means of the door C2. By having the receptacles removable from thev box access is'readily had thereto for placing food therein or` removing food therefrom and Y also'to' admit ofthe parts':beingl thoroughly cleansed and made accessible for any desired purpose.
It is to be understood that a lunch kit embodying the invention may be constructed of any suitable material and be of any capacity and form but in the preferable construction the device is constructed of sheet metal such as galvanized iron, zinc or tin. Any means may be provided for securing the device to the running board ofan automobile or to any convenient part of the machine. 1t is also understood that the device may be carried upon the vehicle in any convenient way. The ice for preserving the food is placed in the receptacle 11 and the food according to its nature is-distributed in the several receptacles and is kept cool bythe circulation of the cooll air resulting from the ice contained in the receptacle 11. inasmuch as the ice receptacle 11 may be thoroughly cleansed andlis provided with a close fitting cover the water resulting'from melting ofthe ice may be used for drinking purposes. By reason of theconstruction of the device the ice will not be quickly melted when the appliance is exposed to warm air on a summers day because the air space between the opposing sides ofthe box; and case prevents the heatreachingthe box contain*- ingl the ice and food.`
The foregoing description andthe dra-wings have reference to what may be considered the preferred', or approvedform of my invention. t is to be understood that l may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, ma teria-ls, dimensions, etcetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope o-f the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invern tion, what l claim as new and desireV tose eure by Letters Patent is 1. In a lunch kitf of` the character set forth, a box, a partition dividing-the box into chambers and having portions cut there-` from and bent laterally to form rests, and receptacles supportedupon such rests, the
openings formedby the rests providing for a circulation of air;v

Bi" lunch kit, comprising a case having a hinged top and a hinged front, bracing means for supporting the front in liorizontalposition, a box disposed'within the case and spaced therefrom an'd'h'avving a hinged top and ahinged front portion, a1 partition dividing the box into ice'and food chambers and having openings thereinforthe freccirculation of air, an ice receptacle removably fitted in the ice chamber andV a plurality of receptacles 'disposed in the food chamber and removable therefrom through the topv and the open front' thereof.
